On our way out we saw scenic overlooks while heading westbound, we made a mental note of these…read moreareas and decided to make a stop on our way back east. After making our stop for facilities and food, we started out again. We were keeping an eye out for the signs to make the pull off. We got to the first one and found a spot to park. This is not to be confused with the other scenic overlook a few miles ahead. This one is purely for the overlook, with a small bit of history. When you look out over the valley, you get to see in the distance a few peaks. Humpback Mountain will be to your west and Heard Mountain will be to your east. Then you just have the sweeping view of the valley. And for clarity, this is the overlook from the Interstate, not the road that is just below the highway. While here, be sure to check out the historic markers as well. One explaining the Rockfish Gap Meeting. This one pertaining to the commission for the start of the University of Virginia. The second is Flight of Richard C DuPont. Setting the US record for sail planing. This flight took him from near this spot to Frederick, MD. The third, Greenwood-Alton Rural Historic District. A significant passage through this area, being that it is the lowest point in some distance through the Blue Ridge Mountains. If you are looking for a place to stretch your legs during a long haul drive, this is possibly one of the best places to do so.

I love small towns, especially ones with history and being established in the mid 1700's, it's got…read morea helluva lot of history. While I was here I learned a little bit about this town and got to walk, drive and hike around a little too. One thing I noticed was the fact that the businesses on Main St. leave out bowls of water for people walking their dogs, never have I ever seen that ANYWHERE. There are many small businesses in town and it seems that all of the ones I've visited for one reason or another treat you like family. The locals are friendly as ever and I know of at least one local who will go so far as to let you follow him to your destination if you've gotten lost. The towns streets are almost spotless, combined the freshness of the air and crystal clear night sky so devoid of the light pollution I've become familiar with back home has made me fall madly in love with this town. The local bar is Spring House Tavern on Main Street, aptly named because it was once the only place where you could get fresh water from a spring in the buildings basement. Nice place for a cold one. Sweet Historical Town outside of Luray that we stumbled on after seeing Meem's Covered Bridge. It's…read moreright up the road on Route 11 . ( S. Congress St.)The town has a unique architectural heritage . A number of buildings still reflect the simplicity of its early German settlers . They have a walking tour where the historical buildings are identified by a brass plaque . Most are private residences. They ask that you please respect the privacy of the home owner . The street is also lined with antique shops , food and dining , and arts and entertainment . Also a store owner said that possibly a tea room may be opening up . That would be Tea-Riffic . It was pretty quiet as we were visiting in February. I'm sure this place is hoping in the Spring - Fall. If your in the Shenandoah River area don't miss taking a stroll down this Historical street . Take a step back in time and imagine all the people who have walked down this very street. Imagine how life has changed over the years with renovations and new structures. It's a great place to slow your pace and take a wonder walk.

I love to hike and was excited to arrive at Big Meadows because I've read about it in books about thru hiking the Appalachian Trail. We actually saw some thru hikers while we were at the Visitor Center and that was special watching their journey in real life. I grabbed a t shirt, a baby book for our new granddaughter and of course had to get some stamps for my National Parks passport book. Then we decided to head over for an "easy hike" at Dark Hollow Falls Trail.

October, 2025. There are four entrances to Shenandoah National Park; the Swift Run Gap Entrance is…read moreat mile marker 65.5 on Skyline Drive (which runs the length of the park for 105.5 miles). Swift Run Gap is the most convenient entrance if you're coming on U.S. 33 from Harrisonburg or Massanutten from the west or Stanardsville from the east. The entrance is usually manned by a national park ranger, who collects entrance frees and gives you a map of the park. We most recently visited in mid-October (height of the leaf-peeping season), but also during a government shutdown. The ranger at the entrance station informed us that the park was "open" but with very limited staffing, and that they were not authorized to collect fees during the shutdown. We selfishly appreciated that the park was open, but were dismayed to think about the forgone revenue that the national park lost during the shutdown. As a result, we spent a lot of money in the bookstore, which is run by the nonprofit SNP Association, with proceeds used to support educational programming in the park (and some staffing during the shutdown). There were a lot of people in the park, but they were following good "carry in, carry out" principles.
