There's cool information here and their calendars are terrific with daily tides, sunset/sunrise, etc. and lots more stuff going on at this facility. The Claude Peteet Mariculture Center has been utilized for many activities since its construction in 1973, including basic and applied research into the intricacies of estuarine and marine ecology. Recently, the station has been used as a recovery tool, the production site for thousands of Florida pompano, speckled seatrout, and southern flounder for annual restocking of depleted coastal fisheries. The center conducts studies and research that enhance our understanding of the life history of red snapper, various finfish and shrimp. In July 2013, a new 23,000 square foot hatchery building was completed replacing the old hatchery building.  The new building provides a significant upgrade in fish production capacity.  It contains areas for broodfish spawning, algae production, live food production, egg incubation, larval rearing, and juvenile holding. Currently, three species of fish popular among Alabama saltwater anglers are cultured at CPMC including red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus), and southern flounder (Paralichthys lethostigma).  Once fish develop and eye, they are transferred to the ponds for further grow out.  During the transfer process, fish are acclimated to pond temperature and salinity.   Fish will grow on the natural foods in the ponds for approximately 20 days.  After that time, a crumbled, pelleted feed will be provided for the rest of the culture period.  The culture period lasts approximately 45-60 days after which fish will be 1-2 inches in length.  Once fish are of size and after a sample of each group of fish pass inspection for common diseases, they are harvested from the ponds and released in Alabama waters. Bottom line: In addition to all the excellent conservation activity here it's an excellent place to get your fishing license with no lines and no wait.

I thought it was super cool and really enjoyed walking around it. Both times I went it wasn't open, which is disappointing. Looks very neat inside. (It's closed on Tuesday and Wednesday) - I'm guessing that's the days I went. Anyhow- it was still cool. If you like old historical architecture take time to check it out.

I had no idea that Mobile Alabama was the original home of Mardi Gras in the United States. I'm in…read moremy forties and I had only ever heard of big Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans but apparently this is where it all started. This little park downtown celebrates that history in such a fun, colorful way. The statues are fantastic! They're detailed, dramatic and full of personality. They really capture the pageantry and tradition of Mardi gras. We happened to visit in December and I feel like that made it even more charming because they had a gorgeous Christmas tree up in the park in addition to all the beautiful statues. Everything felt super festive and we ended up spending almost an hour in the park. That probably sounds crazy because the park isn't even that big, but it's really well kept and perfect for stretching your legs and taking photos. We took our time walking around and our dog enjoyed the open green space. It was a fun way to spend the afternoon and I feel like I learned a lot. I definitely recommend stopping by here if you are in the area.

Sign the guest book and have a short pleasant conversation with the folks there. There are actually a few benches under the trees to rest and read the new bounty. When this was first built we all called it the Lookout for the great views. The trees have grown, which is good. Now it is more of a haven from the rat race.

When I was driving North to South and vice versa I was near I-95 or 75. From South Florida it was always the longest stretch of my trip. It felt like Florida would never end going north. When I was heading home to South Florida it was a Welcome Home sight and I knew I could make it the rest of the long trip home. Yup, this is a Five Star tourist attraction!! There's usually a rest area and souvenir shop too. I'm feeling for my friends in the Florida heat. I'm having enough trouble with the NYC heat and humidity this Summer. I won't be going to Florida this time of the year!

Head…read morethere instead of the address listed on Harbor Bluff, that only takes you to a cul de sac within a gated community. The vegetation is too thick and dense to enter on Harbor Bluff unless you have a machete. The entrance in Village Point Park Preserve is more walkable with no hassles. Walk down the pedestrian only road in Village Point Park Preserve, within a quarter of a mile, there will be an unmarked trail on the right, the boardwalk may be slightly visible through the trees. a brisk, quick walk to this tree and bing, you are at the Jackson Oak. I don't understand why this tree has no historical marker, this tree was a between 300-500 years old. Great for kids, great for dogs, there are also various trails throughout the park. There is also an older cemetery in this park, a short walk away.

The area itself has seen better days with old picnic tables, over-growth and the boardwalk around the tree in need of cleanup and some attention. There once was an information button to press to get info about the tree but it does not work. I am hoping the city and mayor will invest in a little TLC for this walking path and area and spruce it up. It has so much potential to be a great outdoor resource for locals and tourists alike.
