What a huge difference some more square footage and beer/wine makes!! I made a planned pitstop here one day last week when I had a car, specifically so I could stock up on wine, beer, and 'things in jars that are heavy i.e. spreads and stuff'. I normally don't review different locations of the same store, but this location is so far superior to the one on Boylston I had to make note of it. Was it me or did they just have more selection along with all that extra space? Ouf. Love it. 92% of my kitchen is stocked with stuff from TJ's. I don't know how I could ever live far from one!! I'm so thankful that their parking lot is 3 times the size of the Trader Joe's in Coolidge Corner. It was crowded but it was still manageable. I made the big mistake of going on a Saturday which is a bad day to go to any grocery store so it was a bit of a mad house. I picked up the things I wanted or needed and was out like a bandit but not before I found a treasure. I found the Mystery 6-Pack. It comes in a brown paper bag stapled shut and promises that there will be 6 different types of beer inside so it truly is a mystery. All this for only 6 bucks! I didn't need any wine, but I think their wine selection is fantastic. When I got to the check out line I was relieved that there enough cashiers. My cashier told me an elaborate tale of his New York trip and the wonderful health insurance Trader Joe's provides to their employees. So, while the story was grossly unnecessary , it's nice to know that they take care of their employees. read more

A Trader Joe's in the Boston area with a huge parking lot? What! I love this place. TJ's in Cambridge is a great place to stop in on. Personally, it is really close to my home, so the convenience of distance is just amazing. Putting all that aside, the prices are just awesome. There is a Whole Foods near by, but I alway opt for this Trader Joe's. Great Healthy food for a great price. TJ's is a place where you have the opportunity to taste the world. What's that? You might not like the taste of what you buy? Then try it! Did you know that Trader Joe's has a policy that allows you to ask a member to try anything in the store? That's right! You can try anything in the store for free! The staff will open anything up for you right there in the store. If you do not like it, then just say "thank you" and move on with your day. If you like it, pick up an unopened package of whatever you just tasted and then say "thank you" and move on with your day. Another fun fact about TJ's is that if you ask a staff member about an item, they are required to walk you to that item. Some people might not like this, but I enjoy being saved from looking clueless around the isles while searching for a tucked away item. So, Massachusetts has some silly laws about not selling alcohol. This Trader Joe's is the only supermarket around town that I have found to sell beer and wine. Their beer and wine are both cheap and tasty. I use to have a college professor that said "cheap, fast, good pick two. You can never have all three". Well college professor! I just found some beer that I pick up in a rush after work for really cheep and it's delicious. So there! The only bad deal about this place is the crowds. If you are a 9-5 worker, you will run into a mass of people around your work schedule. If you can manage to get yourself there during the work day or shortly before closing you will have a little more elbow room to walk up and down the isles. read more

What's not to like? Grab some brie, crackers, a bag of great flax seed soy tortillas, a tub of Mexican 5-layer dip, and 2 bottles of Shiraz, and it's an instant party for less than twenty bucks! But of course, there is so much more than that at Trader Joes: excellent teas and coffees, all kinds of nuts and dry fruit, spices, exotic sauces, frozen veggies and desserts, artisan breads, vitamins and supplements, pet food, flowers, etc. etc., all at more than reasonable prices. Fresh veggies and fruit is not their forte as someone else remarked, and since they're a bit overpriced, they're past their prime most of the time. But don't let that stop you, it's almost a field trip every time I go, to try to find something I hadn't seen there before. This was my first stop after arriving at my new apartment in Cambridge. I was sick of fast food on my road trip here and desired wholesome food and snacks, pronto. It's the only TJs in Cambridge according to Google Text, but methinks it's better than the ones on Boylston and in Coolidge Corner. This parking lot is like 3 times the size of the one in Coolidge Corner, plenty of staff around to query, they have beer and wine, but it's crowded all the time to me. Maybe I should try to go during the day during the week...if only I didn't have to work to pay for my ridiculous rent. Awesome healthy food, their store line of stuff tastes great from cereals to frozen pizzas to frozen meals-in-a-bag to Trader Jose's Mexican beer. So I can't cook. I blame the fact that I have one tiny saucepan and no knives until the movers arrive. Drawback - the last time I was here earlier this week, some of the produce was looking a little beat up. read more

The Trader Joe's in Cambridge is like a playground for adults ages 21+. They manage to make grocery shopping fun again! How?! Well kids, it's quite simple actually they follow Newton's 4th law: the law of the almighty dollar bill. It's your one-stop shop for everything from a $1.99 box of Trader O's--that's Trader Joe's version of Cheerios--to $4.99 sauvignon blanc or $2.99 Rose. No, I did not forget leading 1's, those are REAL prices. Great place, large variety of fruits, veggies, pastas, pretty much anything you can name. Staff is super helpful and nice! I don't think I've ever received so much attention in any other Trader Joes. This is my go to place when I am in need of fresh flowers, fruits, dairy products, and veggies. Many organic products. They sometimes have free samples around which is really nice. Another bonus about this place is PARKING! I live closer to the Copley location but there isn't parking so instead I come to this location. read more

Excellent place to pick up wine, frozen meals (all kinds of dishes), imported chocolate and candies. They have organic produce and a good selection of cheese, grain, nuts, snacks. I recommend going here to pick up the mochi ice cream (frozen section next to the tiramisu) and the frozen pre-cooked brown rice (microwavable, ready in 5 minutes). They really have a good selection of items for people who are on the go and don't have time to cook but don't want to splurge on ordering in or eat unhealthy fast food. Prices are very reasonable. The service, is excellent. I've never had a bad experience there. I give this place the highest rating. read more

There's only one thing I don't like about this store: it's not close enough to my apartment. Next door would be nice. I went in today for the first time (my parents and their car were visiting, so i took advantage), and had a blast. Wonderful food in all categories, including all those wonderful Trader Joe's brand products (bread, Indian entrees, variety of cereals). I even found shredded low-fat soy cheese (surprisingly hard to locate around here)! And such good prices, too. Far lower than Harvest Coop or Whole Foods, and in many cases even giving Foodmaster and Market Basket a run for their money. A really fun place to shop! I only wish it were within walking distance. Hey, there's an empty space across the street from me, maybe you guys could fit in a new store... (Oh, wait. There is one other thing I don't like about Trader Joe's. The checkout lines don't have conveyor belts. Instead, there's just a table about half a foot long, so customers can't put their groceries up there while they're waiting. Besides perhaps wasting time, this makes it difficult or impossible to watch your groceries ringing up, since you're busy passing them to the cashier. If something rang up too high, you wouldn't catch it until after you're paid. Sneaky, Joe.) Addendum: I tried the veggie masala burgers today. Fantastic! Totally unlike what I expected. Out of the (3) in my area, (Brookline, Cambridge and Fenway), I like this one the best b/c it has the best parking lot and is easily accessible. I still even give this one my top vote despite being bitched out by some nasty customer having a bad day. The checker was very polite and even defended me to the lady and apologized to me having to experience that... Unfortunately, I didn't get his name otherwise I would totally send props to him here! I was there today and apparently it's not an isolated phenomenon, my checker today, I think her name is Sue (?) told me that someone once said to her that she's some dummy bagging her groceries! WTF, that is just so rude that it's not even human. In any case the staff is very friendly. The selection is decent although I think the Brookline one is slightly larger, this one has most of what one needs. read more

TRADER JOE'S GENERALLY: Amazing selection of frozen foods, meats, cheeses, cereal, bread-- you name it. Trader Joe's is inexpensive, and always a good time. The employees are helpful, knowledgeable and sometimes downright hilarious. I have been a loyal Trader Joe's customer for years and as for the store alone, I give it FIVE STARS. TRADER JOE'S, CAMBRIDGE LOCATION: Clearly, people who rave about this location have never been to Trader Joe's in San Diego or Philadelphia. Philly's location has Cambridge beat on all counts (except alcohol--they don't have any... very sad). Better selection, better service, less crowded, and a less oblivious-zombie-like clientele. This location certainly has the Boylston Street location beat, but I almost feel like that one is more like a Trader Joe's convenience store because of it's size and selection. The Cambridge location is also pretty inaccessible without a car. Still, Cambridge has a great selection and is usually well-stocked and well-managed. read more

Today they were free-sampling chocolate cake. I love Trader Joe's. I love the convenience food there when I don't feel like cooking, I love that I can buy their packaged, convenience organic produce for less than it would cost me to buy the inorganic stuff at Stop and Shop or Shaw's. I love that if you buy something and hate it, you can return it. I love their citrus bodywash, and that they sell beer and wine (although I don't love the Three Buck Chuck). I love that if you want to taste something, the staff will be happy to open the box for you and free-sample it out. I love that if you need it, you can probably find it at Trader Joe's--in fact, you can probably find an organic version of it--and you won't have to spend an arm and a leg to get it. read more

They also have organic, free range chicken and grass fed natural ground beef which I have a hard time finding at comparable prices elsewhere. Wine selection is awesome as is the beer selection. I've been an avid TJ's shopper since it was first introduced to me in good 'ole NY. I'm continually impressed with their selection (with the exception of their produce), and I'm a fan of just about everything I've ever bought, especially at the completely affordable price that they're sold. My assumption: all TJ's were the same. Theory debunked: stocking up for the arrival of my good friends with celiacs, I thought to myself - TJ's Gluten Free Chocolate Chip Cookies to the rescue! And then, as I approached the shelf where they usually are, I noticed a great, big, empty, shelf. Quickly found myself an employee, who said, "OH no! Those are so good! I can't believe we're out! Let me go check!" *empty handed return* And then she says, "I'm so sorry, they weren't ordered! They should be in stock in the Alewife location! I can check when they will be in for you!" *sad pout, walks away defeated* And then, out of no where.. 10 minutes later while I was reading chip bag labels... she shows up and says, "LOOK WHAT I FOUND!" *hands me the only bag of gf chocolate chip cookies in the entire store* - probably pulled from an employee's secret locker stash.. This is where I try to shop when I can. It's a pretty typical Trader Joe's. They have all the Trader Joe's brands, which are the cheapest and easiest way to buy fairly healthy and organic stuff without paying the ridiculous prices of Whole Foods or Shaw's. They also have a parking lot chockablock full of Prius's. And the store is constantly full of a cadre of about 2000 employees that spend most of their day chatting with each other in the middle of the aisles, right in your way as you're shopping, seeming to focus on how cool they are. We really need to replace the Trader Joe's employees with polite robots with less attitude. I'd like it so much more. The hours are decent but not great. The produce is hit or miss depending on what you want. And of course, you've gotta love all the Trader Joes's snacks. Since they say they're natural, they've gotta be healthy, right? read more

I have finally discovered Trader Joe's and I am hooked! Cheap to mid range prices, unique items and the freezer section is stellar for any bump on a log that's too lazy to cook in the winter and prefers the gourmet freezer delights of Trader Joe's like myself. Frozen enchiladas that taste like they were made in Mexico only minutes ago and yummy in my tummy black bean soup in a funky plastic container that fits neatly in my fridge. "Every time I go to Trader Joe's (TJ's), I think it's going to be expensive. But when I leave, the bill rarely ever comes to more than $50, which is a lot less than I pay at Shaw's, a grocery store that claims to *want* to save you money. So TJ's is ... TJ's. It's a nicely-kept store, with semi-friendly staff (they do have their occasionally surly moments, like when "Shep" told me he wasn't feeling well but they wouldn't let him take the day off.... thanks, Shep, really inspiring confidence in me there), and a great selection of products you really won't find anywhere else. I love their trail mix, frozen foods, and corn salsa, which is the best salsa I've ever had (I'm a sucker for corn). I come here for the wine, baby. My goal is to try every single wine they have in stock. Simple Times, a delicious lager that has been popular with beer-loving friends, was introduced to me by a TJ staff member and has been my favoriate off-the-beaten-path beer when I don't feel like Carlsberg or Heineken. It is just extremely crowded when you come after work. Some "quick" evening grocery shopping is never quick because you're stuck in traffic all along Memorial Drive and to turn into the lot you sometimes need to go around the corner. Once in, you have to turn sideways and back like a spinning teacup to avoid rubbing people. The items are really interesting. I bought candy merengues, organic this, and organic that. I don't, however, think the produce is sufficient for your whole week's needs, and I did a price comparison in fruits and veggies with Shaw's and Stop & Shop-- TJ's wasn't cheaper, but I think the quality is higher. Some cheeses, like smoked gouda, is $2.99 only for a palm size block, cheaper than Shaw's and just as tasty. read more

Please people...do NOT compare Trader Joe's to Whole Foods. If you think that you are getting a similar product and commitment to sustainability for half the price you're fooling yourself! The store is PACKED full of people. Not to say that you should take a valium before entering...but maybe a shot would make the experience a little better. The staffis very friendly, not quite sure on how they keep their positive attitudes. I get a little suspicious of a company that keeps the information behind their food secret. All of the 'store brand' food is produced by some large name company...but it won't disclose. I also have a hard time telling what food is organic. At first it seems like the majority of the food would be organic and local, just from the overall vibe of the store. I wouldn't be shocked if they're partially owned by Wal-Mart. read more

I recently went to the Newton TJ's, which was a little disappointing. I actually was disappointed enough that I decided to go to this TJ's just a couple of days later! I was so glad I did!! When I first walked in, I wanted to browse the cheeses. I was in luck-- they had a WAY bigger cheese selection than in Newton (which is what I had been originally shopping for there). I actually picked up some chocolate cheddar!! I was also looking for guacamole and they had a few types. I got the Trader Joe's brand because I had it as a sample once before in the store and it was good!! Another main thing I was searching for was a really delicious wine I had gotten there in Jan and Feb last year. It's called "Amusant Bubbly Pink Moscato" and if you're a girly girl you NEED to try it ASAP!! It's bubbly and pink, the cork pops like champagne, and it's sooo delicious!! I have looked for this in Brookline to no avail, although I think they carried it for the Valentine's Day promo in Feb as well, but now it seems like Cambridge is the only one to consistently have it. Last year I eventually had bought about 20 bottles because it is only $5 or $6. I left this TJ's experience really happy. I really like Trader Joe's and if you're not in a rush, a trip to the store can be a mini-adventure. The bf and I don't do all of our shopping here, but we keep coming back for our favorites: - Chocolate lava cakes (not to be confused with TJ's chocolate soufflés). Perfect portions of chocolatey goodness that have earned their way into our hearts and onto our waistlines. - Flash frozen salmon in chimichurri sauce + marinated ahi tuna. Flavorful and easy to cook fish, for people who don't know how to cook fish. - Israeli couscous, whole wheat couscous + polenta. Easy to make/ quick to cook side dishes for after-work dinners. read more

What a COOL Market! Everyone is so friendly, the lines aren't too bad, and the parking is easy enough. Best of all, the products are often higher quality or more unique than a supermarket, yet reasonably priced. Though not high grade by any standards, the sushi platter is filling and INEXPENSIVE. It is a little over $5.00. Most supermarkets sell 1/2 that amount of sushi for $9. We absolutely LOVE THE CHIPS & SALSA. Healthier than the typical, yet well priced. Eat your junk food and get your omega fatty acids with your fiber. Who said healthier food had to taste like crap? They have an interesting selection of wines and beers and they're quite inexpensive. The ready-to-eat dinners/lunches/etc. are tasty, somewhat healthy, and inexpensive. The freezer section has some yummy sorbets. They often have free samples, as well. Few people walk out of Trader Joe's with a sad face. read more

I regularly shop at this Trader Joe's for all of my groceries. Today, I purchased a box of TJs Sublime Ice Cream sandwiches along with my other groceries. When I opened the box at home, I found that two sandwiches were missing (there should be 4) and one was completely outside of the plastic and half eaten. This is disgusting and reflects a gross neglect of product handling. I will be returning this item tomorrow. I love Trader Joe's. I used to take them for granted in Massachusetts and when I was in college in Worcester, but now that I'm in Georgia and the only ones are in the Atlanta area, boy do I appreciate Trader Joe's. Their trail mixes are delicious. Most of their organic products have a very good price point and put Whole Foods to shame. They have their own line of frozen foods and for frozen food, it's pretty good. Not to mention their candies--I'm a sucker for their gummy mango candies and coffee hard candies. And...must I not forget to mention their DELICIOUS chocolate truffles. Oh my, so good. So, take yourself on to Trader Joe's and have fun! read more

I was going to start my review with "who doesn't love trader joes"....but someone beat me to it. This TJs has a smaller food selection than the alewife brook pkwy TJs, but has the ever elusive wine and beer sales!!! As is true with most TJs, the staff is incredibly friendly and generally willing to cha. Oh, and since who really likes chatting with strangers aside from me, they're also amazingly helpful. I'll add that I got my entire thanksgiving dinner including turkey and 6 bottles of wine, to feed 13 people....for $150. THATS INCREDIBLE!!! read more

I love Trader Joe's. It's the kind of store you feel good about shopping at. Maybe it's that they sell organic foods? It could be that this location has beer and wine? Perhaps it's that this is the largest TJ's store in the area with a huge selection? Or maybe it's just that the prices are really good here. Staff is always friendly and helpful, and really it makes me wonder if they aren't a bit crazy... because I just could not STAND half the customers in this place. I'm only shopping there and I can't stand them. How do they do it? I'm amazed. I just went there to get my weekly groceries and now I remember why I started avoiding Sundays there. The place is an absolute madhouse! What was I thinking going there on a Sunday at 3pm???? Finding a spot in the parking lot is a near impossible challenge. And then when I got in there I was behind a guy standing there drinking his coffee blocking all the carts.. UM can you either get a cart or GET OUT of the WAY until you finish your coffee! I mean seriously, like all the other shoppers have nothing to do but wait to get a cart while you finish your latte? I was about to say something when he finally moved... Anyway, every single aisle was jammed packed. So packed you can barely get a cart down the aisle. And many of the customer seem oblivious that there is ANYONE else in the store besides them! They just stop in the middle of an aisle with their cart so no one can get around them! Move to the side! I gave up actually trying to navigate a cart in the aisle and put it to the side and went and grabbed things and brought them back to my cart. Meanwhile all I see is smiling friendly workers in there and I'm thinking if I'm in here 10 more minutes I will want to die... how do they do it? But the food / selection is great so I suffer through the giant crowd of people. Huge selection of breads and tasty cheeses. A decent selection of chicken and meat. And I like that the produce dept. always has some interesting fruits, plus all the staples (if they haven't run out). Although I have to say I think the quality of the organic apples at Whole Foods are better than Trader Joe's, but otherwise I like their fruit and veggie selection. They have Fage 2% yogurt too - which I may shop here for that alone it's so good. Plus organic milk and Stonyfield farms organic yogurt smoothies. They have three big aisles of frozen foods: ice cream and other sweets, veggies, tons of frozen fruit (perfect for fruit smoothies), various side dishes, fish, chicken, and lots of entree choices. All kinds of quick to prepare meals for a busy working gal like myself. And the other great thing is the 2 big aisles of beer and wine. They often have samples you can try as well - today they were sampling a dark ale. The only reason this review is a 4 rather than a 5 is the chaos of weekend shopping here. I always love shopping here with my BF. It's the best. Great service from the cashiers and the stickers are always there to help when you have questions. We love trying new products from Trader Joe's each time we visit. There's a lot of great selections. The frozen foods have all tasty foods from around the globe so have an open mind and try all types. We will be back once a week Friday after work! Three Buck Chuck is well-documented, but cheap merlot isn't exactly my thing so I'll gladly spend a few more bucks get a good bottle of wine at NH Highway Exit prices. The real gem here is the Simpler Times beer. $3.99 for a 6-pack of lager that tastes as similar to the unobatainable Yeungling as anything I've tried. It even comes in the same beige can as Yeungling - I had to check the can to see if it was made in PA, but alas it's brewed in Wisconsin. As a Somervillian, I love the location of this store on Memorial Drive - right at the halfway point to many of the parties I wind up going to in Allston. read more
