We were looking to get our sons 7 and 5 at the time into martial arts. Looked around the immediate area and T4L stood out. From the moment we walked in to where we are now 6 months later, we have felt a genuine family vibe. The staff is friendly and professional. Although there is a family vibe it is important to understand and respect the business aspect of it too. Be sure you are ready to commit and honor contracts that you sign. During our time here my son was injured during training. The staff continuously checked on him during the time he was out. They also froze the account so that we did not have to pay during his recovery time. That is an honorable and professional business practice. My son is currently in jits and the instructor does a phenomenal job balancing discipline with fun. I will keep bringing my kids here and as soon as my baby is old enough he will be in too.

Love this place but we are in a fairly insane health crisis people! They need to do a better job of cleaning and air circulation. There's like 50 kids and 25 parents all at the same time and not a single fan on! C'mon! ‍

They say, "Who you surround yourself with, you become. What you think about yourself, you are. Who you speak to, reflects." I couldn't agree more. My 4 children, now ages 24, 23, 21, and 15, have been a part of Wahiawa Kajukenbo since 2007. Although the three older kids didn't go as far into their martial arts journey as we would have liked, the 15 year old is a true reflection of the Ramos Family foundation - from Grandmaster Tony Ramos, Sifu Sonny Ramos, Aunty Ady, and Sibak Richard to Wahiawa Kajukenbo Foundation and Train 4 Life. My son was and still is pretty anxious during stressful situations, such as test performance or during high level competition. GM Tony taught my child at an early age how to clear his mind and breathe while harnessing his knowledge and skill set to catapult him forward. Sifu Sonny continues his father's teaching with not just my son during competitions, but with every student (adult and child) that steps on to the dojo mats. My son's confidence in his skill set did not come easy though. Tough love is what the Ramos Family gives. My son was not given a participation medal or ranking, it was earned through hard work, lots of tears, and moments of doubt. It's something that has shaped who my son is as a young man. Although martial arts can be seen as tough, Wahiawa Kajukenbo/T4L has a soft and kind side to them. They are firm on setting boundaries and expectations with every student, along with all instructors and staff members, but everyone needs boundaries and expectations - it's what keeps students safe and successful. But, there is a strong feeling of "Ohana" (family) within the dojo doors. Everyone becomes family: students, instructors, and parents of students. You grow together, you have disagreements, and you evolve together. And it's not just the people within that dojo that matter, it's the community that surrounds them. It's that sense of community that I believe Ahgung wanted for his family to carry on, and I believe GM Tony, Sifu Sonny and Aunty Ady do it best. For more than 10 years, WKF has serviced the community by way of their anti bully program and free women's self defense. It's this very principal that encouraged my 15 year old at the age of 9 to raise money for underprivileged children, particularly foster children, so they may learn martial arts or wrestling without being told they couldn't because of financial situations. What I love most is seeing how my 15 year old will take the time to help improve technique (whether it's kajukenbo, kickboxing, jiu jitsu, judo or even wrestling) with younger kids without being asked, becoming their big brother and help build their confidence up, just like how GM Tony, Sifu Sonny, Aunty Ady and Sibak Richard have. We've seen people come and go over the span of 12 years, including instructors; but, one thing that hasn't changed is the foundation and principles set forth by Ahgung and passed down through each generation. We're proud to have our family's roots at Wahiawa Kajukenbo/Train 4 Life. That will always be home.

When we moved from Vallejo to Suisun, we were looking for a new dojo for my youngest kid. She was in 3rd grade at the time. She wanted to keep training but we couldn't drive her back & forth to Vallejo for a dojo that didn't really seem to truly care if the kids were learning well or not. It always felt like the way Sifu, looked at us as if we had Dollars signs on our foreheads. Every quarter, there was an increase to their fees. Although my kid was having fun there, but that's all it was for her, fun. There was no structure. Fast forward to when my kid started training with Professor and Uncle Sonny, the experience for us parents was different. The camaraderie between the kids training and the parents watching in the background was so comfortable. You can feel that family vibe. My kid has now been training with T4L for almost 7 years now. Sure, she's gotten yelled at or had to do extra pushups for making a mistake or something, but that's part of learning. If they, (Sonny, Professor and the other "Uncle's), didn't care about these kids, they wouldn't push them to work harder and try harder. I've seen my daughter to grow to be more confident, more disciplined, more empowered and be more aware of what can happen in real life. Some days, after a hard day at school, she said that going to train always makes her day better. Go figure! Oh, before I forget, I myself even took a Women's Self Defense class there. It was led by Ady and the insight that she gave from a woman's point of view, was an eye opener. I keep telling my friends and family to take her class and I'll gladly go again and take it with them. If you're unsure if you should take your kid to train there, just go and watch them for a session. We did!

He quickly made his way to the 6-9 year old class and with Professor's guidance he jumped on into competing allowing him to earn a silver metal. For context my kid is really shy and quiet. Being at APEX has allowed him to feel more comfortable opening up and has gained a lot of confidence in the short time that he has been there. My husband and I enjoy how welcoming the environment is for us as parents and the kids are also welcoming and help each other out in order to get better. Professor Ramos is very gentle, patient, and observing in every kids individual level. He teaches them fundamentals, and technique as well as how to stay focus. For adults: i personally really enjoy going for myself. I started off with some private lessons with professor Ramos to get some basics. He was very patient with me and allowed me to feel comfortable starting my journey at 35 years old. I also joined in on the women's class which is filled with such incredible women who teach me something new at every class. I started attending the 630am class and it's been so much fun. Everyday is a challenge and a learning lesson. I leave Apex with a solid workout and a feeling of accomplishment and determination to do better next time. But one thing that is consistent are the amazing people and their support. The gym is very clean, mats are always being cleaned. Overall a wonderful place, I really would recommend to everyone to check it out. Can't wait for what the future holds for our kid, one thing is for sure, he'll keep on learning a life skill from one the best, professor Ramos.

This is THE place to train in Solano County if your focus is no gi Jiu Jitsu/submission grappling,…read moreyou're a wrestler who wants to supplement your training off-season, you're hoping to build self-defense skills, or you are simply looking for a really fun way to improve your cardio, strength, and mobility. There are so many reasons I have chosen to train at this gym. To summarize: 1. Coach Nick is well-versed in the constraints-led approach to training, a format that is quickly gaining support in the grappling community due to its capacity for promoting problem solving and creative thinking, rather than simply replicating "moves" that may or may not work in a particular situation (and often don't). I feel strongly that had I started my training years ago with this approach, I would have a much broader skill set. 2. The atmosphere at this gym is fun, supportive, and encourages a humble approach to learning, including by way of making "mistakes." As one of my daughter's school teachers loves to say, "Mistakes make your brain grow." If you don't make mistakes, are you actually learning anything? This is not a gym where you will be scoffed at for doing something "wrong." Trying new solutions and thinking outside of the box are encouraged. 3. At this gym you're not going to encounter silly rules disguised as tradition, like having to line up by belt rank, or lower belts not being "allowed" to ask upper belts to roll with them. Ego has no place here. 4. Classes are scheduled for an hour and you are actually going to get an hour of training. Classes start and end on time and you won't be directed to engage in a 10-15 minute warmup that is irrelevant to the skills of grappling and honestly a waste of time. Yes, we warm up, but it is by getting right to work. 5. This is a no gi only gym. You will not encounter anyone telling you that you have to train in the gi in order to learn Jiu Jitsu or promote in rank. Before this gym opened I was looking all over Solano and neighboring counties for a no gi gym. There weren't any...until Apex Grappling. In the time since this gym opened my skills have increased exponentially. I can't say enough good things about Coach Nick and Apex Grappling.

We first tried a Jiu Jitsu gym in Fairfield, and after just one class, we left very unsatisfied. My…read moredaughter, who was only 5 at the time, was placed in a class with much older, more experienced kids without any explanation, guidance, or pairing with a mentor. During one exercise (which had never been explained to her), a more experienced student took it upon himself to "correct" her by tripping her, causing her to fall face-first. The instructor neither checked on her well-being nor addressed the behavior. The incident left her shaken and unwilling to try Jiu Jitsu again for quite some time. After months of encouragement, she finally agreed to give it another try, this time at Gracie Jiu Jitsu, which had been highly recommended by fellow school parents. From day one, the difference was night and day. The coaches are not only professional and skilled, but also incredibly patient, welcoming, and attentive to each child's needs. They make sure every student understands the exercises and feels safe while learning. One moment that really stood out to me was when my daughter accidentally overextended her wrist. Both coaches checked on her at separate times, Coach Miro even offered to wrap her hand, and later Coach Nikki reassured her that these things happen and everything would be okay. As a mom, that level of care spoke volumes and showed me they truly prioritize their students' well-being. What I also love is how they blend skill-building with play. They incorporate games like Simon Says and end the class with dodgeball. This isn't just fun, it's smart. Play is a crucial part of how children learn, and it's clear the coaches understand how to keep kids engaged, motivated, and happy while still teaching discipline and technique. Beyond physical skills, Gracie Jiu Jitsu focuses on life lessons. Each month, they highlight a value, last month's was respect. The coaches talk about what it means, how to show it, and how it applies outside the gym. They also teach the importance of community, standing up for others, and resolving conflicts peacefully, using Jiu Jitsu techniques only when truly necessary for self-defense. My daughter is now not only learning how to protect herself, but also how to be respectful, compassionate, and confident. Gracie Jiu Jitsu is giving her tools that will serve her for life. Highly recommended.
