Reading my old review makes me sad because the overall vibe of this gym took a turn for the worse…read morestarting in late 2025/Jan 2026. The usual cleanliness of the mats took a decline. The family business vibe that kept me for 6 years was minimal. The owner (Patrick) turned into a MAGA keyboard warrior. I avoided Patrick's classes because it was 45 min of stretching and 15 min of workout. Coach Kirby's classes kept me going since my strength gains were worth it (and you don't need to take your shoes off for strength training lol). There was no point in coming here after the last certified personal trainer quit their strength program and more women gradually left. I would rather drive more to train at a different gym (more than one Muay Thai & strength gyms exist in Sacramento) than come here. I don't mind the cost as long as I am in a clean facility and the vibe is worth it. The only reason they have one star left is for Coach P. - he is a good Muay Thai coach and a rockstar. I didn't really go to Coach Rocci's classes until last year, but the few times I did his music was the best for sparring. Pro tip: use a different personal FB account to post political content where gym members can't see them. Regardless of whether people agree/disagree with your views, there is a level of professionalism needed if you want to be a successful business owner.

Mr. Rodness is…read morehighly skilled in the disciplines he instructs, great with the kids, patiently teaches, keeps each class paced well, and refreshes each session with new ideas and activities. Belt testing is offered either every two months or quarterly and kids earn tips on their belts when they attend. He clearly values each child as an individual and gives personalized attention to each. He always ties in positive conversations with kids about how they can apply concepts of both in Tae Kwon Do or BJJ and at home (respect for parents, being kind to siblings, etc.). I love that our monthly tuition includes up to 3 sessions per week, we generally go twice a week, but sometimes we're there three times per week. My youngest (3 and a half) insists on staying and watching her older brothers practice- she can't wait to be part of the little dragons when she turns 4 in the summer. The schedule is super consistent each week, month and year which is also a huge plus for us as a busy family. It's available on the website https://rodnessmartialarts.com/schedule and kept up to date so we never have to worry about last minute changes or keeping track of anything. My 9 year old takes Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) here which is convenient because he stays to take the class right after TKD. Mr. R is an extremely effective instructor in this discipline as well. The belt tests for both BJJ and TKD are both challenging and fun for the kids, they really look forward to it when it is time for belt testing and feel very proud when they earn their way to the next level. My kids add: "Mr. R is really nice, teaches us cool kicks, and teaches us how to tie our belts. He taught me how to even make a cool snap sound with my belt when I tie it" -(7 year old) "He's really kind and challenges me to be my best. I also like that he doesn't push me past my limit if I'm feeling frustrated and lets me take breaks if I need them." -(9 year old) Best way to get ahold of Mr. R is to email or drop into the studio between classes. I believe there are sign ups on the website as well, but if you contact him directly you can schedule a trial class. He offers special rates for siblings and often runs specials for sign ups. We've found the tuition reasonable compared to other studios in the area, especially considering the reliability of the schedule and value of the instruction. Our kids have greatly improved their flexibility, strength, and technique- we are very pleased.

Mr. Rodness has a teaching style that really connects with kids. He manages to balance discipline and encouragement in a way that keeps students motivated. What we appreciate most is that it is not just a martial arts school. The classes consistently reinforced focus, perseverance, accountability, and respect. Those lessons have carried over into school and every day life for our son. If you're looking for a place that develops confidence and character in addition to excellent martial arts skills, this is a fantastic environment. We're grateful to be part of the program and highly recommend it.

Under the leadership of Kru Rick, the atmosphere is welcoming, respectful, and inclusive. I started at rock bottom. Exhausted and carrying extra weight, I couldn't manage a single push-up, yet I was treated like part of the team from day one. The coaches are knowledgeable and offer thoughtful feedback. Classes are challenging and fun, and the people here are wonderfully supportive and encouraging. I started for physical fitness and stayed because Muay Thai has had such a positive impact on me mentally. A year and a half flew by and I'm down 30 lbs and feel stronger and more confident in my body. Muay Thai is healing. I've had a rough several years, and training has helped me work through fear and other difficult emotions. Over time, I've become more resilient and grounded. I genuinely love this sport and it has changed me in ways I didn't expect.

I highly recommend the Muay Thai class for adults and for kids! It's a great workout (Warning: You will sweat a river =P) plus if you're into the fight game, this is the perfect class to get you started. I loved that Denise, AJ, and Cheryl really kick your butt to house/Vegas/EDM style music. I also love the boxing class. The place itself does not look fancy but it is what it is = a kick ass place to get your cardio in along with fighting classes for all ages. I think its great they also hold occasional challenges (most fat loss/most weight loss) and have prizes such as free membership for a period of time, etc. I find it very hard to believe that this gym or any other would charge you for 4 months after the fact-- I canceled mine when I moved and did not experience such an issue. I did however buy the 10-pass class for when I do visit my family on the weekends and can get a cardio workout in. I say try it for yourself. There are all kinds/sorts of people here: thick, thin, young, older, beginners, novice, expert. You'll fit in no matter what shape you are in.

I had been itching for a while to learn a new fighting style as well. First, I have to mention that the place is kind of tucked away in the back of a complex. I wish it was more visible from the street, as I probably would've come in sooner. The facility is a good size, and a lot cleaner and more orderly than I've seen at other martial arts gyms. There's plenty of space in the back to store any belongings, and the area for parents and spectators is positioned strategically in the corner as well, so there isn't too much congestion at the front where people have to check in. There's a small mat for beginners and a much bigger mat for the more experienced fighters. There's also a fighting ring for the fight team. The coaches were very welcoming on my first day, and Coach Ash, the owner, even took note that I had previous experience in another style. He used that knowledge to personalize my learning track, which I appreciate a lot. I had come in with several people from my work, and in seeing that we were a group, he even customized a pricing structure to incentivize us to all sign up together. While I know that isn't at all what he is obligated to do as a business owner, it's refreshing to know that someone will try to meet you somewhere in between versus just waiting for you to come to them. In the teen and adult class, so far it feels like it leans more on the teen side (I'm 34), but I hope that will push me to keep up. I've already signed up for a year (great deal per class, and they work with you in case you can't make some classes) and have gotten bruises on my leg. Looking forward to more!
