I had never stayed in a hostel before, so I was a bit nervous based on stories from friends in other crowded cities. The check-in process was very easy. I booked through hostelworld and they just needed a passport to verify, then gave me the entrance key, house rules, and directions to my room. I stayed in a co-ed room with about 20 other people. Each bed was in bunk form with clean sheets and pillows with plenty of secure space to keep luggage underneath and an outlet to charge devices on the wall. The showers were clean and I felt like I had privacy while changing as well. The atmosphere at night was awesome. During my first night, I met four people each from a different area of the United States/England and we ended up bar hopping together. What an experience that was! The nightly rates are only a few more bucks than other similar ones, but I can assure you that they do not have the energy like the downtown Flying Pig does!

I expected the sink so small I couldn't wash my face. I expected the mural of a lady bent over, touching herself, directly over our bed.* I expected the grimy shower, the uncomfortable beds, and the scratchy towels. I expected the inability to check in until 2 pm, with nowhere to stash our stuff. I expected and enjoyed the rowdy atmosphere, the bar downstairs, the irreverent staff. I expected that drinking heavily until 3:30 am would be enough to let me sleep through the noise and the night. But... I did not expect and I did not appreciate that some guy would steal some girl's bed in one of the group rooms, and that they would scream at each other for 45 minutes starting at 4 am. And I did not expect that absolutely no one would do anything about this. Since the rate here is actually not THAT much better than the downright luxurious (by comparison) actual hotels (like the DoubleTree), I think I'll spring for one of those next time. On this visit, I chose Cocomama for part of the trip. Cocomama is close to Fredericksplein, which is the main artery for some hip places you'll want to go. It is near the city centre, but not too close, otherwise it gets tacky. The ladies at the front desk are friendly and helpful. They give you a full tour of the hostel, which was once a brothel. Just my luck... In the basement, there is a nice lounge area with shared kitchen and dining space. Lots of lovely couches to fall asleep on and a beautiful cat to keep you company. There is also a garden and you can go out there from 9AM - 9PM, only cigarette smoking allowed. Tons of books, movies to keep you entertained. You can also play old-school Nintendo. Wow brings back memories. They will also do your laundry for €6. If you don't have a tablet or computer, they can loan you one. Good wifi throughout the hostel. If you arrive before check-in time, you can leave your bag and check-in later, the front desk open 9AM - 9PM. I stayed in a 4 bed coed room aptly named, "The Brothel Room." Beds are comfy and also there are lockers in the room if you need to lock up something. The bathroom is in the room, so not as big of a hassle to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night. My only gripe is that they don't serve breakfast. It is probably one of the only places I've stayed at in Amsterdam that doesn't have breakfast. Bummer...

The hostel provided a fun environment for our two night stay and we were able to meet people visiting Amsterdam from all over. Unfortunately, the day after we checked out of the hostel my room mate woke up with bed bug bites all over her back and on her face. I understand that this is the risk you take when staying in a hostel, however I always expect for the staff to do thorough examinations of every bed before a new guest checks in. We immediately alerted Coco Mama via email about the bed bug situation. We told them about the time and money that we lost having to dry clean everything we brought into their hostel and asked for them to check the beds we stayed in. I received a response telling me that unfortunately things like this happen in hostels. There was no apology or mention of a partial refund for our stay. I reached out two more times about the situation and inquired about a refund and got no response. I find this to be completely unprofessional and telling of Coco Mama. It's unfortunate that what started out as a great stay ended up costing us time, more money, and a bad case of bed bug bites. I would not recommend staying at this hostel.

Dyson hair dryers for use in the shower room. Plenty of showers (7-8??). Nice Rituals shampoo + body wash. One shower did flood a little, so keep that in mind. Can change out towels as needed from a file cabinet in the common area; I shared a room with my friend, so grabbed an extra comforter as well- both items included! Pod living was similar to that of Japan, limited but adequate space. Common area available if you needed more room, place to work, etc. It felt a bit cramped for two people, but was fine overall. Bonus : resident black cat (needs occasional assistance exiting and entering the hostel).

I stayed in a mixed dorm of 6 people, and the beds were as comfy as $50 a night can get you, although the sheets did smell a little. There's two safety boxes under each bunk bed (although I didn't use them), and a private shower (with shampoo/body wash) and toilet in the room, which was super great. There's also a shared WC of six for the entire floor. Service at the front desk is what you'd expect from an average hostel - average. I did appreciate the strong wifi connection in both the rooms and the lobby. There's bathrooms in the lobby too, and free breakfast (bread, ham, cheese, cereal, yogurt, milk, coffee, tea).

I was really impressed with this hotel…read more Just a hop, skip and a jump from Centraal Station (ten minutes on the bus), this location is not as remote as you may expect. The city centre is walkable in about half an hour if you know the right directions, and for the money you save in room price you'll be able to stop for a few drinks on the way! My friend and I stayed here for 3 nights, split the cost of rooms so it cost each of us less than 200 euros. Per night, the rate worked out cheaper than some of the hostels in the city centre, and for the quality of the hotel it's quite remarkable. It's clean, quirky and certainly not lacking in personality, which you can tell from the Superman cow statue outside. Inside, the interior ranges from being modern and sophisticated to a bit zany in the rooms - ours had a stripey, 70s style retro carpet and a spacious checkered bathroom that is probably the nicest I've seen in a hotel. They don't call it the art hotel for nothing - our bed was backed with a massive (and terrifying) picture of a little girl. Intimidating, but certainly not lacking in personality! Our room was equipped with kettle, clean, soft, warm towels, chairs and all the other usual amenities such as toileteries that you'll steal but never actually use. I was particularly impressed with the variety of TV channels, from Dutch MTV to various foreign channels to suit tourists from all over Europe. There were a couple of British channels if we urgently needed to keep up to speed on what was happening at home. Downstairs there was a swimming pool, free internet from the PCs on the ground floor and a gorgeous wee bar where you could get breakfast. The security in the place was good - you had to use your swipe card several times to get to the room - and access for wheelchair users was good due to the lifts. It's right outside a bus stop and there was an option to rent mopeds and regular bikes, so you're kept well in transportation links. All in all, loved it and have recommended it to several friends who prefer a comfier choice to hostel living!

The room itself was tiny and fit our suitcases and bed and not much else. The tiny room, the white walls and the sanitariness almost made me feel like we were in a insane asylum. Also the bathroom wasn't really a separate room, more like a piece of glass separating it from the bedroom. Any noises or smells that usually stay in the bathroom, entered the bedroom as well. This just made our stay more entertaining and memorable.

We booked our stay months in advance paying a little fee upfront and paying the rest as we checked in! Bulldog Hotel is in red light district so it's really close to all the restaurant and shops as well as "coffee" shops. Definitely suggest staying here, security is always available when entering the building, you aren't able to enter the hotel portion if you don't have a pass which made me feel really safe.

Everything feels so squished (barely any walking room), lockers are run down, and the bed linen doesn't appear to be the cleanest. The beds were so close that I could literally turn my head and see a random face less than 6 inches away... No Bueno. Sorry, going to have to take one last star for the awkward way the showers are designed. You'll get absolutely no privacy the moment you decide you want a nice hot shower and call it a day. You scan your key, open the door, and there's a shower divided by a sliding glass (see through) door, without another door to separate that from the room with bunk beds... meaning anyone can walk in any time on you. I never felt so vulnerable in my life. ***** No free breakfast included. Free wifi. Really clean showers (despite the lack of privacy). Body wash/shampoo included. The toilets are in separate rooms outside the main rooms. In a gist, you get what you paid for. I'm not picky so I had no regrets.
