From the entrance you walk down a staircase lined with posters for various cover bands like Bob Dylan and the Beatles. The space downstairs is large but broken into 4 or 5 rooms. The night we were in an Italian blues band was playing and it seemed like everyone seated had gotten there early enough for spots. It's hard to see the band from the side rooms so we stood in front of the bar. This place got packed and if we had moved we would have definitely lost our spot. Drinks are on the pricey side and it got super hot with all the people but this was a great time. Everyone was having lots of fun and it gives you a glimpse into an underground Italian live music venue!

This place is absolutely fantastic. After paying a one time cover charge that is good for a year,…read moreyou can savor the music! I have been there for Beatles v. Stones cover band night, Jimi Hendrix cover night, and others. I would highly suggest a visit to this underground spot. A word to the wise, if you want a place to sit/a table, arrive early. This is one of highlights of the time I lived in Rome. (The drinks are band-themed and tasty. They can be a bit pricy, but the general vibe and experience of the place makes it all worth it.) Enjoy your time there (and your time in the eternal city)!

One of my three favorite jazz clubs in the world…read more Alexanderplatz is extremely eclectic in the styles of jazz it programs. But the Italian jazz scene is one of the best in Europe. There are a lot of classically trained musicians who have become superlative jazz artists. Alexanderplatz programs everything from traditional cocktail lounge swing to post-free-jazz abrasive to experimental European style electronic new age/jazz complex fusion. The third style is one we don't have much of in the U.S. We have the first two styles plus Marsalis family style neobop plus Brooklyn non-genre. Every session we have heard has been absolutely positively superlative. They break new frontiers on the innovative stuff and demonstrate superlative craftsmanship on the traditional stuff. Most other jazz clubs have good nights and bad nights. You can run into mediocre student wannabes and washed up old f**ts. None of those D-listers will show up on the stage at Alexanderplatz. * * * Another plus for Alexanderplatz: The room is extremely atmospheric. You go down a winding and almost-dangerous staircase into a basement. The basement is brightly colored and has jazz paraphernalia everywhere. It also has a balcony and archways which is not typical basement stuff. It makes the scene totally magical when you are down there. * * * The bar is the only weak point of this otherwise fantastic club. There is a very limited selection. The bottles are not always that great. Worse. You pay at the end. Everyone shows up in a huge traffic jam at the bar to pay with only one cashier taking money. The line runs long. It is a jazz club so it runs late. Whether or not you will make your bus is an open and interesting question. My tip is to pay right after you get your drink. You leave when the music is over and everything is fine. * * * But musically - this place is pure awesomeness on a stick. If you like any kind of jazz, and are willing to hear jazz in all of its forms, you really need to make a point to come here. If you like one and only one kind of jazz only, Pretest the artists before you book. But I would still say come anyway. The artists of your "not-my-genre" may get you to change your mind.

I believe on of the original jazz clubs in Rome. Great ambience, pretty decent food. Service is…read moresometimes a bit spotty

We had one of our best times in Rome at Charity Café…read more We'd been at a aperitivo spot just steps away and as soon as I saw a huge Billie Holiday poster in the window, I knew we had to stop in. My husband is a blues musician and we realized it was also on his list of clubs to check out. On the early side, they have a nice aperitivo set-up with reasonably-priced drinks and little snacks. The friendly bartender indicated that there was seating in the back room where the band was doing a sound check. This place will make you feel like you're at a secret little music club in the 1950s. It's intimate and dark and only so slightly gritty, with rows of seating, like fancy bleachers, that face the stage, each with a tiny table for your drinks and snacks. It's so perfect! Shows start around 10:30pm-- so if you're there for aperitivo, you'll be there for hours waiting for the band, really not a bad thing. They play similar jazz/blues standards on the sound system to keep you in the mood. We had dinner plans in Trastevere so we left around 8pm and returned close to Midnight... the place was packed by that point and it's a total vibe!

Got there around 11pm and the bouncers said things don't liven up til around 2am! WTH! I'm usually asleep by then. So we wander off to a neighboring bar for some drinks and return a little later. From the outside you'd hardly think anyone was inside but boy was that an illusion. It was packed! We were there on a Thursday night and the music was primarily US hip hop. There were bboys on the dance floor and people were dancing their asses off! Personally, it was way too crowded. This is the type of place where you'll accidentally get elbowed or get a drink spilled on you. Oh and don't even think of having to go to the bathroom.
