A jazz club for American tourists. Okay, there was one Australian lady and a few Chinese. Everyone else was American. Prices are sky-high because this is a soak the tourist situation. Alexanderplatz which is the premiere jazz club in Rome charges $18 euros for a month membership - no cover after that - and $12 per drink. So once you have paid your monthly cover charge, you can hear all the jazz you want for free - or if need be for $12 euros a drink At Alexanderplatz, the performances are legendary with some of the most innovative and technically amazing musicians in Rome. We dropped over $150 euros at Gregory's. We got a perfectly reasonable yeoman guitarist. But nothing like the artistic lions that routinely perform over at Alexanderplatz. Now to be fair, we had dinner at Gregory's and we never eat at Alexanderplatz. The standard "sushi dinner" was perfectly reasonable yeoman sushi. There was so little of it that we both had to order a la carte dishes afterwards. The extra extras seriously expanded the final tab. * * * One argument in Gregory's favor: their bar is extraordinary. The bar at Alexanderplatz is mediocre. Gregory's charges top dollar for its bar offerings, but what they mix and what is in their bottles is worth every single euro they ask for. I would be perfectly happy to just go to the bar, and order a few premium beverages. I would hear my wallet cry. But I would know that I was drinking supremely well in return for my investment. Fortunately, the bar is downstairs from the club. I would not have to put up with the shenanigans in the club. * * * The problem with the club is the crowd. At most, one third of the customers are actually there to listen to jazz. The room is filled with tourists taking selfies. There are also hot-daters playing snuggle-buns. Many of them will leave mid-set so they can go back to the hotel. Gregory's is less about the music and more about selling happy memories of Rome. * * * Alexanderplatz gets a mostly Italian crowd. You are looking as musicians, music critics, academics, and all purpose artsy types - as well as normal Italian human beings who just want to hear fine music. The music is taken very very seriously. Yeah, there are usually two or three tables with good time Charlies who are doing the phone recording, party hearty thing. But this is 8% of the audience at Alexanderplatz as opposed to 70% of the audience at Gregory's. To be fair to the crowd at Gregory's, the music at Alexanderplatz is simply better. The jazz at Alexanderplatz is capable of transfixing even philistines with tin ears. Gregory's jazz doesn't put that much on the table. But the crowd at Alexanderplatz sets me up for listening to mystic, complex music with the highest level of attention and aesthetic receptiveness. The crowd at Gregory's just gets me irritated. * * * If you are in Rome with a hot date, go to Gregory's. Be prepared to shell out the bucks. * * * If you are in Rome with someone who can truly appreciate once-in-a-lifetime musical experiences, take them to Alexanderplatz. After you talk about the music for half an hour after the concert, You can still go back to the hotel. Just figure that the hotel will be the second best part of the night. read more

really cool jazz place the service was really good and the staff was pretty attentive throughout our whole night! we didn't have a reservation so they let us stay downstairs at the bar until there was a table ready. there was also some people who were being very loud and the staff had to tell them a couple times to quiet down or they'd have to leave so they take it very seriously! there was a €15 cover charge and everything on the menu was pretty expensive. it was good but i don't think i would visit again just due to the limited food menu and since everything was expensive. read more

We love jazz (our son is a jazz musician) and have been to many different jazz bars in different cities around the world, so my husband was happy to find this one in Rome for our date night. He made 6:30 p.m. reservations for a 7 p.m. show. The performances are upstairs but when we walked in we could not go up there yet. That was fine, we were able to enjoy a couple good Brooklyn Brewery IPAs at a table downstairs (my husband was thrilled that they had an American IPA - not easy to find in Italy). When the time came for everyone to make their way upstairs, the people not eating dinner were seated in the chairs and sofas down near the performers. For those of us eating, we waited for the staff to tell us where to sit. We were the first ones upstairs that would be dining and a man I took to be a manager pointed us to a side front table of the eating area. Great! We liked those seats because we had a little privacy, more room, and my tall husband wouldn't need to worry about blocking anyone behind us. But then a young woman working there told us no, all three front tables were reserved. I told her that we were directed there (and we did have reservations) but she wanted us to sit in the middle, second row, at a small table where we would have to sit side by side (not much room to to eat). I suspect she wanted to place to look fuller somehow. But, after the manager asked what was the problem, she sighed and told us to sit at the original side table. The funny thing is that another couple walked in and were seated in the no eating zone. Later, one of them walked back to ask about eating and then both he and his partner were shown to the middle front table that we were told was unavailable to us. That was a long story to say I don't think the woman liked us too much. She took our order (they offer asian food/sushi - so not cheap). We had a sushi platter, spicy edamame, and shrimp gyozas. At one point during our meal, we asked our server if we could have another round of the IPAs. About 15 minutes so we thought she had forgotten. When she was walking by our table, I asked her again if we could please have a couple more beers. She was clearly miffed and basically said we will get them when we get them because she was busy. The musicians, the reason we were there, were fabulous! It was a pianist and saxophone duo that could play just about anything. If it wasn't for the grumpy server, this would be a 5 star review. This place is awesome! Came in last minute to enjoy the jazz band upstairs, along with some cocktails. Espresso martini per favore! The band was great, really good dynamics and musicianship. It's very quaint and packed in there, but it was just what we needed. Jazz on a Tuesday night in Roma, Italy! They do an open jam as well. Only stopped in for drinks this time, but the sushi looks awesome. Next time! Service was okay, but they were working the whole room so I get it. About last night... We started off excited about this jazz club. The food and the ambience is good, but poor customer service doesn't make up for waiting more than an hour for food to arrive, especially when our table was the first to arrive. I would definitely visit again, but my preference would be to sit downstairs or outside if the weather warrants. Upstairs where the jazz band plays is a bit tricky! Went here for the music, was completely blown away by everything this place had to offer. For starts the sushi was easily some of the best sushi I have ever had, it was simple but every ingredient was fresh and thought through. The edamame we had was soft and boiled/spiced to perfection. Originally we were just going to get a roll and a bowl but after trying the food we immediately got another roll. The staff was a whole new level of mind blowing. To start the waiter made us feel exactly where we belonged (even though we were a little underdressed for a classier restaurant). You could've just sat there and watched the bar tender all night, she looked like she was a professional I wouldn't want anyone else making me drinks. The atmosphere of the whole bar embodied a classic American jazz bar, even the other people and tables we were by were friendly and really added to the whole experience. The 3 stars is due to POOR SERVICE & Veggie Tempura masquerading as fish sticks! We started out enjoying our evening. By the end, not so much. The host explained that there is a 12€ cover charge before he escorted us to the upper level where the band performs. Kamal, our server, was pleasant and attentive at first even to the point of sitting at the table with us while taking our order (the menu is primarily sushi). He had the time to do so because we were the first guests to arrive on the upper level. It's very tight up there (to the point of being a fire hazard) and he was accommodating in helping piece our table together for our party of 6. He took our order and we waited... and waited. Our drinks came in 15 minutes. I had a Pornstar Martini (12€ and very good). About 30 minutes in, one end of the table was served their food (delicious - everyone said so and I concur with the Shrimp Fried Rice and Yakamishi Gambero that I tasted). The other end of our table waited an absurd 45 minutes to be served. By that time, those who were served prior shared some of their food with those who hadn't been. My dish, Vegetable Tempura, arrived resembling fish sticks! I informed the female server that was hanging around that unless the dish was complimentary, I didn't want it. She asked me if I wanted it and again, I told her that if it wasn't free that I didn't want it and not to put it on the table. She put it on the table. That's when I saw that it was NOT tempura but panko-encrusted veggies served with a mayonnaise & soy sauce aioli (pictured). I bit into one of hard sticks and couldn't bite through it because it was the tough root end of the asparagus (pictured). Nice-turned-nasty Kamal (who was too busy serving all the other customers who filled up the small space to ever return to our table to check on us) finally showed back up and when I informed him of the exchange I had with the female server, he had the nerve to ask me if I was American! Trust me that it was definitely meant as an insult but it was laughable since he is Iranian faking a bad British accent (no shade/insult here because he actually admitted this back when he was nice to our party). The irony of his little sneer is that this establishment and his paycheck exists solely because of the only true AMERICAN music medium - Jazz. When we went downstairs to pay our bill, that same nice host now turned bartender tried not to comp the Veggie Tempura based on the fact that I ate it. The truth is that I picked through it because I was hungry but I didn't eat 3/4 of the dish because, as I told him, it wasn't tempura but panko-encrusted veggies. He chuckled VERY ARROGANTLY and acquiesced, removing the charge. There was never anything even near an apology for the poor service. THE MUSIC (which is why we came): The band was good and the singer (who mashed Jazz scatting with opera) was interesting & unique. All in all, I recommend this establishment for the music and the food (not the Veggie Tempura though) with the caveat that they don't appear to be American-friendly. They need to be aware that Americans are used to GOOD SERVICE AND THAT THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT. They also should be mindful that based on these attributes, we actually TIP! Those snooty, fabricated superior attitudes of some Europeans can learn a lesson from American HOSPITALITY. If not for the horrible service, a couple of us were going to order dessert and another cocktail but we didn't trust that it would be served in a prompt fashion. read more

My husband and I decided to visit this jazz bar on our first night in Rome. From the beginning I regretted it. The bartender charged us in American dollars which made us feel as though it was a tourist trap. The area where they played Jazz was overly crowded. They sat us by the bathroom so you could hear the toilets flushing and they constantly asked us to move our seats up so they could get to their supply closet. The ambiance was missing. Another couple walked out after waiting 30 minutes for service. I was utterly disappointed and I do not recommend this jazz spot- especially if you're American. I wanted a relaxing Thursday night with my partner after a long day. Everyone was respectful and vibing to the music. There were some people live streaming which was kind of weird and I felt like they should've asked the performers prior but no one seemed to mind. Make sure you make a reservation online. Then you'll be able to get a seat. I made a reservation the day before and had no problem getting in for an after dinner drink. As for food, they serve Japanese food. But I just got drinks. It was a pleasant surprise to stumble upon this place when I was in Rome. I did research it but it was nice to know that my fellow Yelp reviewers cared enough to share this place and the reviews were on point. This is not your hook up come meet tons of people type place to be honest. This place is small, the drinks are good, the live Jazz band is great. This place is best if you come with a group or with someone to have drinks and just chit chat. We had a blast here during a recent trip. We came in early and weren't able to get a table to watch the band but they have a camera and TV where you can still "watch" them and the music can be heard even in their downstairs room ( location we were at) so we were still able to enjoy the music This place does get really packed and busy later on at night and it was nice just hanging out. The bartenders were great and the drinks they made us ( whiskey sours) were perfectly mixed. When I am in Italy again i would definitely make a stop here again. read more

Don't bother.... they charge 15 euro per drink and admission to listen to a jazz music, then explain that your next round is $6-10 a drink. We order 2 more drinks after paying 45 euro and they try to charge us the admission fee again. Food menu is lacking and service was none.... poor had to ask for straw, menus etc. Charge for jazz music...the bad was good yet the singer must have had a cold or something. We stayed a few blocks from this place and i was looking for a spot to hangout late Saturday night. It is pretty small downstairs with approx 8 seats at the bar and a couple of small tables. The actual jazz area is upstairs in a bigger room. But they paid it in and it is really tight there. I never made it up there due to lack of reservation and cost (20 euros). I just hung at the bar and chatted it up. Pretty friendly staff. Good selection of all different type of whiskey. Not a lot of high end. Price was fair but the pours a lot less than back home. But cool place to hang non the less. read more

Wow, what a find! The cobblestoned streets were quiet, but we were out roaming Rome, looking for something fun to do. Thank you Yelp and the Italian Yelpers who reviewed this place, it turned out to be just a couple streets over from our hotel (Baglioni). We crept up Via Gregoriana - which looked deserted right up until we were practically on top of the place. A tiny door revealed a jam-packed dining room -- literally barely an inch to move. We would have loved to eat there, but no dice. We wandered upstairs and were shown to couch-like chairs, and wine orders taken. What followed was a high-energy jazz performance complete with hooting and hollering and yelling in Italian. Didn't understand a word, but it was impossible not to get taken away by the tide of enthusiasm in the room. The head of the band was so excited we thought he might blow a gasket. It was great. Coming here was a highlight of our trip. The way it was packed in the dining room, the food must have been delicious. We will be back to Roma. We went on a Thursday night in the middle of August. When you're in Italy, this alone should lower expectations because the country really does shut down. This was the only nightlife we could find. The "concert" is held on the second floor of the bar. It was incredibly hot. The have small air conditioners going but it did nothing. We couldn't make it more than 15 minutes before leaving. Our drinks that came with our entry were good. The music was quality but not quite what we were looking for. More of a small crowd quietly (think recital type concert) than upbeat energetic crowd. read more

A great place. It's a bar and a small restaurant at the same time located on two different stairs with bands plying every night around 10 (at least when I was there). We decided to check out this place on our recent trip to Rome. Close enough to tour spots but tucked away to keep locals coming. Sunny was immediately welcoming and we loved the ambiance of the place. The bartender was really fun and friendly as well as the waitstaff. The bartender and Sunny made us wonderful cocktails and we even had a small whiskey tasting. Met another great couple who was glad they stopped by as well! We stayed by the bar on the first floor and could hear the band playing upstairs. We had so much fun we didn't end up leaving the first floor all night! Great food and drinks. So glad we found this place!Last night of 2 weeks in Italy before home to S Florida and we really wanted to listen to some live music.We read the reviews ,made a reservation and headed over.We were warmly welcomed and taken upstairs to be seated at a table with a view of the musicians in this very intimate club.Our drinks arrived,the band-a trio of a pianist,tenor sax player and a trumpet player-began and a wonderful evening ensued.The menu was limited but i really think you come here for the music and atmosphere.We were only going to stay for the first session but ended up moving to the sofas ,even nearer the music for the second session as we were enjoying it so much.Four more musicians joined the trio at this point and really added to what was already great.A perfect end to our vacation.We would definitely recommend this place and advise reservations as it gets busy and the place is so small. read more

Nestle around the corner of the Spanish Steps is this little gem of entertainment. It might not be everyone's cup of tea but it's a great place to listen to live music ( on par with Chicago or NOLA). The drinks are a bit pricey but that's to be expected and the crowd is a super friendly mix of locals and tourists. So here's the deal...the Jazz is on point but the do t tell you if it's packed upstairs where the music happens...so you pay the 20 euro cover and get upstairs and find hat it's packed out with no seats and no standing room...that stinks...drinks are also not great...but...the jazz is on point so there's that. read more

Gregory's night club is a good place for a touristy small group of people interested in mediocre Italian food and an overcrowded small venue for a jazz performance. My girlfriend and I each had different cocktails that were not nearly as good as the one's we had at the hotel nearby we are staying, as well as two entrees equally not impressive in taste. For the jazz concert, as they call it, the three musicians are experienced in their individual crafts, but do not perform in a way an ensemble should sonically sound to anyone who has ever listened to jazz. There are drums, piano, and string bass, but no brass instruments. Interesting to check out but would not recommend, especially not for a group, even with a reservation. read more

Very good jazz music but some terrible service. Waited 40 minutes for the food and payed for two drinks we never got. Very dissapointing.

Give it one star for the great music. Hard to enjoy it though when you are packed 60-70 people into a 70sq m loft with no air conditioning. Add to that seating that's less comfortable than budget airline and you got the picture. The band soldiered through an hour's set like champs but the waitresses couldn't be bothered. One girl taking one drink orders 10 min apart. So we left after the first set sweaty, thirsty and achy. My recommendation is come on a cool weekday. Get here early and get you drink order in right away. Then you might be able to enjoy great jazz played here. read more
