Highway Tunnel…read more Called the Presidio Tunnel or MacArthur Tunnel for short, the tunnel is located within the Presidio in San Francisco and takes vehicles from Highway 1 (Park Presidio Blvd) through the Presidio to the Golden Gate Bridge. Unfortunately, this is a favorite spot for taggers. They broke through the barbed-wire fences near the top of the tunnel. During the presidential election in 2016 someone sprayed SF [heart]'s TRUMP on the west entrance of the tunnel as seen heading towards the Golden Gate Bridge... but as I looked at my photo closer the original tag was really SF VS TRUMP LoL! We've traveled through this tunnel often on our way home. I keep missing to check-in Yelp... I'm either too far away or I get that "Easy, Tiger" (I'll have to wait a bit longer to check in) message. Anyway, It's always nice to end our day driving through the Golden Gate Bridge... plus there's no toll heading north towards Sausalito. There are 4 lanes in the tunnel. This location does have its advantages and disadvantages. The advantage are: it has such beautiful scenery, the long bridge, which allows you to really enjoy the ride on a clear day and at times, it's less congested than the Baybridge. A few of the disadvantages are the roads at the toll plaza are horrendous. Between the potholes the dips and debris located on the roads. You have to be very mindful of the speed and the spot you enter because it can be a hit or miss. The signs seem outdated and really need to be modernized for people who either struggle with their vision or just want to feel like the high tolls are going towards something tangible in this location. The lanes could definitely be updated as well. The painted lanes are worn out and fading. Meaning, at any given time you could be driving safely in your lane and then all of a sudden you'll be merged into a completely different lane. I've seen it cause issues and very close calls. Although commuters are using this just to get to where they're going hopefully it could be modernized to make things more convenient, especially if you're driving early hours of the morning or late at night for better visibility. Ultimately, if you focus on your driving, you can really enjoy the trip on the San Mateo bridge and the convenience of using the toll plaza..

Traffic just moves faster and smoother when no one has to stop to pay a human toll taker. I have Fast Trak (Fastrak) so it's no change for me. I don't use the SM Bridge during the morning commute, so I don't know what the traffic is like going westbound at that time. The SM Bridge, in general, has good and bad points. Usually it's a smooth drive across the longest bridge in California (25th longest bridge in the world). Road rescue crews are pretty quick. I have needed them twice, and both times the tow truck got out there fast. Some call boxes have been removed, so you carry your phone. Fire crews come from Hayward or Foster City. There's a CHP station hidden under the Foster City anchor. The biggest problem with the SM Bridge is when the setting sun blinds drivers at certain times of the year. (I don't know if you have same problem with the morning sun). But at sunset, the sun hangs low and blinds you as you approach the highrise section. Yes, it causes accidents. Worst one I personally saw was when a dump truck broke down and sat in the right lane of the high rise. There's no shoulder, so it sat in the right lane. You couldn't see it until you were right behind it because the sun was blinding. One car clipped it, and spun out. It threw car parts everywhere, and resulted in a huge accident. So let's be careful out there, and carry sunglasses.

It was already a convoluted route which originally began at city Hall and ended on Treasure Island. Since 1939 the route has been altered somewhat but still remains convoluted and today plagued with traffic problems and poor maintenance of signage. Specifically, the Seagull in profile with a blue background signs have been badly faded and not all are clearly visible. You will need to use the internet to get a clear description of the route. Some of the major sites along the route are City Hall, Asian Art Museum, Little Saigon, Japan Town, Union Square, China Town, Telegraph Hill, Lombard Street, Coit tower, Fishermen's Wharf, Palace of fine Arts, Golden Gate Bridge, Lake Merced, California Academy of the Sciences, Haight-Ashbury, Twin Peaks The Castro and Oracle Park. Parking at these various sites runs the range of easy to very difficult. Metered street parking is available at some locations. Due to the numerous hassles involved in trying to run the route most tourists opt for city transportation or the Hop-On, Hop-Off bus. After Robin Williams passed, they renamed it in 2015 because he lived right nearby in Tiburon -- and honestly it feels fitting. The Bay Area has a personality, and somehow this entrance matches it. Northbound is the real experience. You're in traffic, rock walls around you, then suddenly you come out the other side and the whole Marin coastline opens up in front of you. It's one of those moments where everybody in the car goes quiet for a second. Southbound is the opposite -- you exit the tunnel and boom... the Golden Gate Bridge appears like a movie reveal. It's weird reviewing a tunnel, but this one isn't just infrastructure. It's a gateway and kind of a tribute at the same time. Some places you pass through. This one actually feels like you arrived.

This is a great place to go to eat the lunch that you got from that hole in the wall restaurant that had no seating area! 101 California even has festive red cushions for you to sit on in the tiered seating areas (it's hard to explain this just look at the pictures) making it a pretty comfortable spot! Summer is here!…read more Thanks to Yelp, I was able to sit and enjoy the sun at some of San Francisco's finest privately-owned public open spaces (POPOS) such as the 343 Sansome Rooftop Deck and Citigroup Center Atrium. Time to give back! Here's my contribution to an Excellent privately-owned public open space, rated by the people who created the guide http://www.spur.org/­files/u7/POPOSGuide.pdf In 1982, three stepped pyramids were built around the garage exhaust vents to create this urban garden at the front of the spacious plaza at 101 California. The granite steps have seating pads and are spotted with large planters decorated with colorful flowers that change seasonally. It's a nice breakfast or lunchtime spot to spend alone without feeling like a loner-loser in the city and enjoy the open air warmed by the San Francisco sunshine. It's not too conducive to group hangouts since the planters alternate with the seating pads and these pads fit about one butt each. Pabu and Ramen Bar are the two restaurants right next to this urban garden but not sure if they do takeout. But, there's a Yoppi Frozen yogurt, dry cleaner, US Bank, The Plant Cafe Organic, and a florist here. What I did was grab a Philz coffee from their truck at Sansome/Pine, walked over here, enjoyed late morning coffee, get some vitamin D from the sun and went on my merry way. There were others as well, but definitely far less crowded in the morning than at lunch time. If you're looking for a to-do list in the city to check off this summer, I strongly suggest the POPOS guide, because it doesn't cost you a dime to enjoy these wonderful public open spaces.
