City Life Church serves as not only a facility for church services on Sunday, but as an active…read morecommunity center with robust arts programming. This former art gallery space is being utilized to showcase area artists on a rotating monthly basis, as well as a function hall for private events. They regularly host a community arts program called "Arts Beats" which encourages people to come out and paint and listen to live music. Their services are held every Sunday at 10am. I have not partook in their religious services, but have attended a number of their art shows over the last few months. The staff is very friendly, and happy to collaborate on arts programming. I love that they are bringing more art to the Powerhouse Arts District!

As we…read morestudy and proclaim the scriptures, we also look for ways to practice our faith and to seek the justice God proclaims today. We are multicultural and LGBTQ affirming. We love good music and on any given Sunday you may hear classical music, global hymns, gospel or jazz. Children play an active role in the church and we seek to welcome them through children's bulletins and bibles, a children's sermon, and sometimes having the kids lead music or read scripture lessons. Worship is at 10:30. We serve Communion once a month and offer anointing for healing and wholeness by the Deacons once each season. Baptism is available to all ages, with the expectation that you remain part of the community to grow in faith. Sunday School for children and adults is at 9:30 am. We have 3 age- appropriate classes for pre-k through middle schoolers, and an adult bible study as well. We have occasional youth group activities such as the confirmation lock-in and preparing a meal to serve at the Family Promise shelter. The church offers 8 weekly English Conversation Classes for the community, taught by volunteers. We support the Oelhaff House shelter for survivors of domestic violence, Center for Food Action, and CoFiA and First Friends, which are both groups that work for immigration justice. Jazz Jam meets the 2nd Friday each month, at 8 pm, where musicians of all ages and skills come to share their music and build community. You are welcome to check us out!

On December 9, 1937, Pope Pius XI named the Church of St. John the Baptist as the Cathedral for the new Catholic Diocese of Paterson in northern NJ consisting 3 counties: Passaic, Morris and Sussex. The current St. John's is very much the result of the vision of the church's thirteenth pastor, Very Rev. William McNulty. He engaged P. C. Kiely, a prominent church architect to design a new neo-Gothic church that can seat up to 1,800 people. The cathedral was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. We'll definitely come back soon to get more detailed.
