Both were every bit as incredible as we remembered: the pasta rich and full of flavor with pecorino and guanciale, and the pig perfectly tender and juicy with that irresistible crispy skin. Yumm! We started with the Crostino N'Duja, which was rustic, spicy, and the perfect way to kick off the meal. We also ordered a charcuterie plate. To finish, the lemon torte was bright, refreshing, and surprisingly, not too tart. It was exactly just the way we like it. Kevin's service was outstanding--warm, attentive, and genuinely thoughtful, which made the celebration feel even more special. We were given a couple of shots and a special cookie for my hub's birthday and after learning I am Filipino, he also offered us shots of his own special Ube liqueur. La Tavernaccia has truly become one of our favorite places in Rome, and we already can't wait to come back again to try something new that Kevin highly recommended - the Roasted Veal.

And that was only during the first course. * * * Trattoria Monti is an absolutely sensational house of traditional Abruzzo cuisine. It fills up fast. Reservations are strongly recommended. It may take reservations to get into this place. But I have no reservations whatsoever about the food. Trattoria Monti is pure amazingness. * * * The first course that had me commuting back and forth between Earth and the Astral Plane was Ravioli with Tomato Sauce and Grouper. Ravioli yadda yadda yadda. Tomato sauce insanely good but yadda yadda yadda. Intentionally well aged super strong grouper? WOWZA !!!!!!! The fish flavor blended with traditional pasta and amazing Roman tomatoes beautifully. But this was a ravioli filling that commanded attention. I paid attention. Big time. * * * Vitello Tonnato is a standard Italian summer dish. (Veal with tuna sauce if the name doesn't ring a bell.) I had never had it before but I knew about it. I did not know that Vitello Tonnato defines comfort food. Never mind the fact that the Italians have both superior veal and superior tuna. The dish is a reminder of a basic lesson in classic French cuisine. Fresh mayonnaise made by a fine chef is just an amazing ingredient. Fresh mayonnaise is integral to a Vitello Tonnato. It made everything wonderful. * * * Dessert was apple cake with zabaglione. The apple cake was nice enough but was just a vehicle for the zabaglione. Zabaglione is like chocolate. There is no such thing as bad Zabaglione. Even I do a very good version of this, Because cooking Zabaglione is simple simple simple. Everything does hang on the quality of the Marsala wine that you use as the main ingredient. Trattoria Monti has access to Marsala wine that I could never locate and probably never afford. Good stuff in --- Good stuff out. Absolutely positively amazing stuff in --- Absolutely positively amazing stuff out. This was Zabaglione for the Gods. The Gods weren't eating at Trattoria Monti that day. (I think they were watching PSG vs. Arsenal in the UEFA Championship.) So I got their Zabaglione. Never mind Apple Cake. That stuff would have been splendiferous even on a brick. * * * Perfect appetizer. Perfect main course. Perfect dessert. Perfect life. What more could you ask for from lunch?
