We thought this was the cellar brewery but it was an Italian eatery which carried the IPA and a blonde beer from that brewery. A lot of people were drinking wine here. We sat outside and hoped to look like a fellow Norwegian enjoying the night, the food, the drink and the company. Had the hanger steak with arugula salad. It had a chimi sauce. Tasted how I expected it to. The oxtail ravioli was oxtail stuffed ravioli in a light oxtail soup soak. It had quite a spicy kick to it! I liked the seating location as it faces the "Y" of a main road. One can see the people, tram and car traffic going by. Very friendly staff and attentive. I rarely give out 1 star, but I think this place deserves it. Trattoria is a very popular and elegant Italian restaurant in Oslo. We decided to sit inside because it was more private, since everybody was dining outside. Now their menu options are limited. I ended up ordering Italian meat soup. I absolutely disliked this soup. The owner / manager explained that they cook it exactly the way Italian meat soup is done. It might be the case, but it just tasted to strong and pungent. I let my friend tried a bit and she didn't like it either. I just think it was a flavor that Americans are not used to. My friend ordered the oxtail ravioli. That was actually really good. Service here wasn't great either. Apparently that's a common complain. Anyways I ended up spending $20 on a bowl of soup I detested. read more

Eek! Methinks not... so much so that we really did NOT. This rating is just based on the service, because we did not eat here. We stumbled upon this restaurant looking for a microbrewery that we thought served food, but didn't, so we were secretly starving and frustrated, but outwardly patient and nice. We asked one of the servers in the outdoor dining area how we could put our names down for a table, and we were told to wait way out by the edge of the dining area. We saw many people walk by us and just take a seat at any empty table, so we asked again and they seated us right away. I ate at Popolare with a friend on a warm saturday evening in July. We sat outside, but the interior of the restaurant is so cool that it would have been no sacrifice to sit inside, either. I had recently returned from holiday in Tuscany, which means that my expectations of italian food were at a rather lofty level. However, the food at Trattoria Popolare was almost, if not as good as the food I had eaten on holiday. The wine was also good, although I was not able to have quite as much of it as I had had the luxury of in Italy, as the prices are quite steep (it is Norway, after all...). First of all, the menu seemed very promising of good authentic italian food. It is quite small, contains daily specials for each course (which our waiter failed to present, so we had to ask every time). I am not an expert in the regional differences in Italian cuisine, but I recognised many of the specialities of Tuscany that I had encountered on holiday - for instance the mighty Bistecca Fiorentina for 2 people, which inidcated that the chefs at Popolare know what they are on about. We ordered two starters to share - carpaccio and a mixed platter of hams and cheeses. Before our food arrived, we were served focaccia and olive oil. This was easily the most disappointing part of our meal - the focaccia lacked salt, was too spongy, and the olive oil was not very good quality. Our starters, however, were excellent - the carpaccio came in wafer-tthin slices drenched in oil and topped with arugula and pine nuts. The ham and cheese platter contained two types of cured ham, a fennel seed studded salami, a goat's milk cheese, a mild hard cow's milk cheese and a wonderfully creamy gorgonzola. It is worth noting that the starters were very large, and we had to downscale our pasta main dishes (they come in small and large portion sizes, allowing you to have pasta as a first main course). For mains we each ordered ravioli - one the daily special with ricotta filling and tarragon in a sage butter sauce, and the other with an oxtail filling in a broth with spinach and oregano. Both were truly excellent and seemed freshly made. Afterwards, we were too full to have any dessert, but I had an espresso, which was just as it should be - small, strong and full-flavoured. The prices are also very decent for such a popular area - the starters were ca NOK 140, while the small pasta dishes were NOK 119 (large size is NOK 169). Along with a very nice atmosphere, I declare this a winner if you want uthentic Italian fare in Oslo (which used to be hard to come by, with the notable exception of Villa Paradiso further up the street, but as they are a pizzeria, I am not counting them). read more

Have been here several times, the first time I ordered risotto of the day, it almost tasted like I ordered a platter of salt sprinkled with risotto. Second time I ordered pasta and it was basically tasteless. Third time's the charm, but as people have mentioned here already, their service is HORRIBLE. I asked for a table as the website said you can drop-in anytime, the waiter looked shockingly at me and screamed "YOU CAN HAVE IT UNTIL 7.30", alright, I'm just going to have a quick meal anyways. As I was waiting for my friends and placed the order for us beforehand, I felt like they were looking at me as if I have no friends and that I am just there to troll?? I guess they were just afraid if the food arrives before my friends, it wouldn't taste as good, still it made me feel uncomfortable. Then my friends finally arrived and we used percisely 45mins to finish our meal (the clock only hit 6PM and supposedly we could have the table until 7.30PM), the waiter aggressively asked if we wanted something else, he was standing there and staring at us as if he wanted us to ask for the bill and almost indirectly throwing us out. By far the worst service we received in all of Scandinavia. The only reason why I'm giving it 2 stars is because the food was actually quite good. But the service was horrible, even by European standards. We sat down and it took 20 minutes for them to take our order. Our appetizer came promptly along with our drinks, but then it was radio silence. Another American couple sat down next to us after we received our appetizer. They were served by our same waitress, and while asking for food suggestions, the waitress told them that the fish would take quite a long time to cook. They said they were fine with that, and ordered the fish. You guessed the next part: their fish came before our dinner. We had ordered pasta, so we were wondering why it was taking so long to get our dishes. Annoyed with the fact that the next table received their dinner before us given that they sat down 30 minutes after we did AND given the fact that their fish dish takes a long time to prepare, we asked the waitress about our order. She acted like she was annoyed by our 'impatience,' and came scurrying over with our plates right after we asked. We wondered if our food had been sitting around ignored for awhile. Overall, it took 1 hour to get our dinner between our appetizer and our entree, and it only came after we asked our waitress about it. We found all of the wait staff to be rude, annoyed by the fact that they had to work, and slow to respond. It was not a great experience by any stretch of the imagination. We should have waited to eat at the nearby restaurants (Le Benjamin or Delicatessen) since it took so long to get our food at Trattoria Popolare. read more

An Italian restaurant located close to downtown Oslo where the popular area Grünerløkka begins. It's not a typical Italian pizza-pasta-restaurant but a little bit more exclusive. But still not too fancy for most people and the price level is moderate. I had the Veal with Prosciutto and Polenta - a kind of corn-based porridge. (Don't forget to order sides!). Very tasty and well prepared and together with a Ripasso Superiore it was a very good combination. Quick and good service by the swedish waitor and nice and elegant premises. The wine list is also very large if that's a must! Recommendable! :) read more

Located at the beginning of the boho Grünerløkka district, Trattoria Popolare is The spot to take a brunch or a café on Sunday while ogling at pedestrians. The dishes are efficacious: nothing fancy, just good products, not tight-fisted on the ingredients, and of reasonable portion for those Italian standards. They're all served with Ciabatta bread and a fruity olive oil. The home made tiramisu is honorable. read more

Monday late lunch/early dinner time ordered daily 4 course and some ala carte with their micro beer and wine. Wait staff very nice and helpful when ordering but as the place filled up with off-workers, the ratio of wait : table went over 10 with no help to clear tables - so things slowed to a crawl. The girls were professional but it took so long to finish dinner we were too late to make our show. Menu was nice and dishes were well made with a bit more spice than usual for IT items. The "cod fish" that was served, admittedly turned out to be shark with little effort to salve our objection to being deceived into eating something we would not have ever ordered. That spoiled what should have been a nice meal in a nice location. read more

We had booked a table early Saturday evening before the restaurant was getting crowded and got the worse table for two by the kitchen on the second floor when it was empty all around us in that area which was a real pity and it was super noisy. read more

Rudest jerks in Norway. Anti American and worst treatment in the city. Walked in, asked if there was a table for four for dinner. Told "everything is reserved.". Asked how long the wait was and told "everything is reserved." Asked again how long the wait was and told "outside thirty minutes, I don't know." A couple walked in behind us, was told wait time and suggested that they wait just outside in the chairs or they go to the bar and then could get a table when it opened. Tried again to communicate with the staff and were ignored. They obviously did not want our business, so we left. Appalled that our concierge recommended this restaurant and told us we would not need a reservation. read more

AMERICANS BEWARE!!! While recently traveling in Oslo my family and I were recommended this restaurant by our concierge (who we no longer trust). Once we found the restaurant, as the signage is terrible, we were completely ignored by the entire staff. We tried multiple times to communicate with them and because we were Americans we were treated horribly. I've worked in the restaurant industry for years and if I discriminated and treated customers as horribly as we were treated I would be fired on the spot. This restaurant is clearly anti-American, and going here was the worst experience of our trip. I urge any Americans traveling in Oslo NOT to give this restaurant ANY of their business. read more

One of my absolute favorites. The food here is very good, without being pretentious. The waiters are always welcoming and friendly, the atmosphere is great (both downstairs and upstairs. A bit stiffer and more quiet upstairs) and it is quite affordable by Oslo standards. A must-visit if you like italian food. read more
