Jucy Car Rentals - This shows up on the side as well. Not always appropriate.

I'm torn on Jucy…read more On one hand, our car was in good condition and everything worked. It was relatively low miles and pretty clean (Toyota Corolla). Jucy was also much less expensive that other rentals. On the other hand, pick up and drop off was a HUGE hassle. They're not on airport property so you have to wait for infrequent shuttles. Check in takes AGES. We scheduled a pick up at 10am and finally were on the road at 11:30!!! Drop off sucked too - we were assured that the metro was a 2 minute walk from the Sydney office, where in fact it was more like 15-20 minutes. It fun when you're hauling bags. Staff is nice but nothing is fast or easy. If you value your time spend the $ and go with someone else.

Car rental is a complicated business making comparisons difficult. This review is written from the…read morepoint of view of someone who rents cars internationally relatively frequently, usually through corporate employer deals. Jucy looks like a saving but a ton of extra costs add up. The first one is the taxi to and from Jucy. Unlike Hertz (in most airports; I haven't tried it in Sydney) Jucy is actually in a suburb literally on the other side of the runways, maybe 3km as the crow flies but you are not a crow, you have to use the highway and zig zag around. This means a $20-30 taxi ride, unless you have data and you can call an UberX. So add $40-60 to your bill, more if you're going to be a large group. They have substantial fees for anything non-standard. Get caught by a speed camera? I think it was $60 just to process the letter. The kicker is that they will charge you for every letter sent by the toll authorities. So the dozen toll letters we got for the various "passing by without a tag in the car" ended up being hundreds of dollars in fees, taken off our credit card, which took a while to contest (we ended up cancelling the card because Jucy was not responding and the letters kept arriving and causing further charges). Oh, and most of our foreign cards didn't work (luckily I have lived in enough countries to find one that did). It generally felt like the entire system was set up to catch you. The facilities are fine. It's a budget rental place and less gloomy than the usual airport deserts, there's actual houses around, coffee nearby, etc. Staff is mostly friendly. Customers are another matter entirely; perhaps due to the budget angle, a quarter of the customers that were renting at the same time as us were verbally abusive to the staff and generally rude (queue jumping, loud, stand in your personal space, bump into you etc.). When you've come off a 20 hour flight, it adds to the suck. I sympathise with the staff here. Talking of which the place was understaffed both when we got there and when we returned the car; in the latter case, so much so that we almost missed our flight waiting. You should be aware that the cars themselves have a very "visible" paint job, with relatively inappropriate jokes and a lightly dressed woman to go with them (see photos). This doesn't really matter most of the time (although you will get more looks in the street than a Ferrari) but my in-laws did not appreciate it at all, and when parked in Watsons Bay we got some neutral to unfriendly comments from residents, so much so we had to find a less visible parking spot for the beast. Our fault for not looking it up I guess, and I'm sure backpackers won't mind. The Toyota van was just that, a 10 year old (?) budget van which worked fine to get from A to B with 8 people. Generally the fleet looks old, it could be because they are quite basic models but I was taken back to the early 2000s or even late 1990s. Honestly, especially with the corporate discount, the (relatively small) savings are not worth it and we will stick with the big names at the airport who provide a new car for only 5-10% more, with a standard deal that we understand.
