Typically I would meet local friends here for a glass of wine or beer. The location is price to sit in the comfortable outdoor area and take in the view of the water. At night the lights above the walkway and in the water are so pretty and during the day people watching from this area is pleasant.

But they have recently changed their menu to something somewhat disappointing. There is a lot less choice now to what there used to be and it is of absolutely no use to people who prefer traditional English food (other than the steak that they offer). It is on the expensive side of average, but not too bad. The building itself is located very nearly in the centre of Bedford (5 mins walk away).

Last week, Day 1: Oh, this place is pretty bad! Shame, as some of the people working here are really nice. But the rooms are getting old and worn, there are absolutely no drawers, no type of hanging cupboard, just two 6 inch poles sticking out of the wall with a few hangers. Apparently it's going to be done up soon, and it needs to be. I just can't believe that the room space can be so wasted. I lived in Bedford when this place was built and it was so flash. It has aged badly and needs to be totally redone. No extractor fan in the bathroom so you have to shut the bathroom door or the smoke alarm will go off. That means that by the time you have had a shower, EVERYTHING in the bathroom is soaked. The walls, the floor, any toiletries. Soaked with condensation. Good things are the kettle and fridge, just make sure you switch the fridge on! And there's a safe. Note to Management - Get some drawers in these rooms. Those cubes are just stupid. Not sure what you can do about the bathroom ventilation though. Today, Day 7: I have to admit I'd probably stay here again, even though that's not how I felt on day 1. Very convenient for walking into town, or down the river, and there's parking for £5 per night, if the parking lot isn't full. The bed is comfortable, and having the kettle and fridge were great for tea and coffee. Maybe next time the hotel will have been renovated, and there will be drawers in the rooms. Not the best hotel, but for the price, not the worse either. I would actually half recommend it. Just keep your expectations a little low.

The reception isn't manned and although the office meant the staff were 6 foot away through an open door, I had to pick up the phone and dial '0'!As the lady began to answer the phone as though it were an outside line, she looked surprised when I said hello! from 2 places at once. Weird. As I spoke to the lady (face to face now) and she was helpful, but her demeanor gave me the impression she was trying to hear me above the voices shouting in her head! That is possibly a little unfair, maybe she had a migrain. The room was at the top of the stairs, and everything looked on the surface very much in order. However. Flushing the toilet created a moan from the pipes which would put a fog horn to shame! The radiator made noises every so often that sounded like pebbles being thrown down a corrugated iron roof. It needed bleeding, very badly. It woke me in the night several times. I did sleep pretty well, and the breakfast was ok. I have yet to check out, so if I have any other comment, I will add them later :-) £59 a night including full english breakfast. The same woman checked me out, and still had the disconcerting expression. Mouth smiling, eybrows puzzlingly frowning.

Bed is comfortable but nothing special. Tiny TV, hard towels, not much in the way of amenities. Not a drawer to be seen. But the breakfasts make it worth staying here! I'd said it's cheap and adequate. If you want luxury, stay elsewhere! But if you are okay with cheap, it's really not bad!

The best thing about this particular travel inn, is that it's situation on Priory Marina, a beautiful lake with an abundance of wildlife! it's a lovely tranquil place where you can take a walk, or even hire a boat and have a little jaunt on the lake. Not only do you have the advantage of the lake, you're also very near to the town centre, it's about a 20 minute walk away. You're also close to the river, which again, is lovely for a brisk stroll. I would highly recommend this hotel
