The kitchen had everything we needed to cook our own meals every day, which saved tons of money (restaurants in Montreal are expensive). The best part of the apartment is the gorgeous deck, where we spent every evening enjoying dinner, wine, and relaxing. The apartment is about a 10-15 minute walk to Marche Jean-Talon, which is the first thing we did in Montreal-- stocked up on tons of fresh fruits, veggies, local meats and eggs and bread. The apartment is only 5 minutes walk to the Beaubien Metro (subway), which we used almost every day to explore the sights of Montreal. The subway is clean and extremely efficient, and cost-effective if you buy an Opus card. Alain was a nice host (he and his wife live downstairs), and although we didn't need anything, he made sure we knew we could always knock on his door if we did. The rental process itself was easy, and he immediately refunded to us our security deposit after we checked out. Overall, a wonderful experience, and we can't wait to go back!

Home to the Green Line, Métro Viau is a good choice if you are going to Olympic Park, Saputo Stadium, Maurice Richard Arena, Parc Maisonneuve, the Montreal Botanical Garden, and, in our case, the Hotel Universel Montreal. Opened mere weeks before the 1976 Summer Olympics, Métro Viau's "ticket hall" definitely has that sprawling, simple seventies architecture feel ... and is bigger than it needs to be. It's a bit too big, and not really user-friendly. It reminds me of the old days when I went to France, found myself in a Métro station without much to guide me. Let make it easy for you: There's only one line, and if you're headed to the city, take the escalator to the sign to Angrignon ... that'll get you to downtown as well as the main hub for Berri-Uqam (for Green, Orange, and Yellow lines). I highly recommend checking out the Olympics-Inspired mural at Viau, Jean-Paul Mousseau's Opus 74. It's an impressive mish-mash of turquoise and yellow ceramic tiles; as they put it "the mural represents both the stadium's tower and the Olympic flame." So, in the final analysis, what do I think of Métro Viau? It's big, dirty, not very pleasing to the eye or easy to figure out. But in the end, it worked out great for us in Montreal ... and would use it again in a heartbeat. A BAD FRENCH TRANSLATION OF MY REVIEW: La Société de transport de Montréal (STM) a mis à la disposition de ses citoyens un très bon réseau de métro, voire extrêmement utilitaire. Métro Viau, qui abrite la ligne verte, est un bon choix si vous allez au parc olympique, au stade Saputo, à l'aréna Maurice Richard, au parc Maisonneuve, au jardin botanique de Montréal et, dans notre cas, à l'hôtel Universel Montréal. Ouvert quelques semaines seulement avant les Jeux olympiques d'été de 1976, la "salle des billets" de Métro Viau dégage une impression d'architecture tentaculaire et simple des années 70 ... et est plus grande qu'il ne le faut. C'est un peu trop gros et pas vraiment convivial. Cela me rappelle le bon vieux temps quand je suis allé en France, me suis retrouvé dans une station de métro sans trop me guider. Simplifiez-vous la vie: il n'y a qu'une seule ligne, et si vous vous dirigez vers la ville, prenez l'escalator jusqu'au panneau indiquant Angrignon ... qui vous conduira au centre-ville et au hub principal de Berri-Uqam. Well, we're in strange days territory with much of Montreal closed in an attempt to slow the spread…read more(flatten the curve!) of the Covid-19 pandemic, so I thought I'd use some of my time to write some love letters to Public Transportation. Because I do love public transit, I think it's important and beautiful and necessary and an epic feat of technological and social engineering. And in particular I love Montreal's metro system. And in particularist, I love De Castelnau. The station was inaugurated in 1986, but it doesn't suffer from the 80s overall design aesthetic. It was designed to refer to Italian architecture since it's positioned at the top of Little Italy. It was named after Rue De Castelnau which gets its name from the French general Édouard de Curières de Castelnau (1851-1944), who defended the French town of Nancy against the German army in 1916. It is lofty and bright and carved in warm beige stone - Travertine apparently. it features these amazing little vignettes carved into the stone of scenes inspired by Jean Talon Market by Quebecois artist Jean-Charles Charuest. Charuest was a local artisan gifted at carving these gorgeous birds out of semi-precious stone, and there's a delicacy and vivid sense of life in all his scenes that reminds you of someone who thinks a lot about how to render birds in stone.

The good: The fact that it connects to everything is a MAJOR upside. Lots of space on main floor. Constant security officers. Maps and directions everywhere. The bad: Can get busy and crowded sometimes. Has a lot of homeless people hanging/sleeping there. You can easily get lost and go out the wrong exit. I love Bonaventure. When you know where to get out, and where to go, it is a time saver.

This station, like many others, was opened in 1966 as a much-needed system ... for not only the citizenry but for the stampede of tourists who would come for the 1967 World's Fair and 1976 Summer Olympics. It ain't a pretty station, a bit dated in its design, but Métro Saint-Laurent sure gets the job done! First, it is located in the Ville-Marie arrondissement (borough) in the heart of the city. While there are a zillion ways to get from place-to-place in the city, Métro Saint-Laurent puts you a 5 minute walk to one of the epicenters of North American comedy: Just for Laughs. It's a 15 minute walk to Old Montreal and within a few blocks from Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). It's also a short walk to Notre-Dame Basilica (15 minutes), MAC Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal (5 min.), Quartier des Spectacles (a block), and Parterre du Quartier des spectacles (less than a block). This side-platform station serves the green line -- and is one stop away from Métro's epicenter, Berri-UQAM (home of the green, orange, and yellow lines). You'll find trains riding every 5 minutes or so, so you don't necessarily have to sprint to catch your ride. I also like some of their cool features. They have a 38-bike Bixi dock (Montréal's bike-share program). You'll also find some cool murals on the platform by the late, great Claude Vermette. If you have to get to downtown Montréal, I highly recommend coming and going via Métro Saint-Laurent!
