A definite must in Prague. We were in town for a couple of days, and everyone was raving about them. We finally went out after dinner on our last night to find a cart and make sure we got ourselves one. They "cone" is very similar to a Mexican churro, bread seasoned with cinnamon and sugar cooked over charcoal. We got ours filled with vanilla ice cream, which in itself was pretty amazing to. Trdelník, I tried most of them and this is quite good. To be honest, most of them don't have a whole lot of distinguishing features. The things that I looked for, and found are stores that cooked it fresh, sell it hot and offer a few options for the inside. It is just not the same after a few minutes in a bin. Don't waste your time and money unless you can see them cooking it in front of you. Trdelník does cook them fresh throughout the day, but they reheated it before giving it to me. While still delicious, it was a little chewy on the inside. I would go again, but if I had a bit more time, I would find a shop that cooked it fresh and would give it to me right off of the skewer. read more

I know, I know: the trdelnik is NOT a "traditional Czech pastry." Not even close. Even the locals we talked to in Prague hate these stands and swear that they are a new introduction to the city and are definitely NOT a traditional treat. Know that by buying one of these things, the locals are going to scoff at and be annoyed with you. But who cares? They are DELICIOUS. I tried so very, very hard to resist one but after jealously eyeing other tourists snacking on them around town, I finally couldn't hold out any longer. I've eaten these cinnamon and sugar encrusted baumstriezel chimney cakes all over the Christmas markets of Germany, but Prague is the only place I've seen them take it a step better and stuff them with soft serve ice cream and top them with a chocolate-dipped strawberry and a cookie straw! OMG! How can anyone reconcile with their inner fat kid if they DON'T end up buying one of these things? I got one, it was expensive, and I sat my butt on an adjacent rickety park bench and scarfed the whole thing all by myself as my husband just watched and shook his head. The ice cream wasn't great but the fresh trdelnik was buttery and had that phenomenal oh-so-cinnamony goodness. It was worth every scoff, every penny, and every calorie. No regrets. read more

More messy than good We joined the hoard of tourists crossing the Charles Bridge, where we passed a place that sold chimney cakes. They looked really good and we made a mental note to stop by when we were walking back. Later as we headed back we spotted this place, which was close to the one we saw earlier, and stopped in. They offered several flavors and even one with ice cream. I had tried my first chimney cake a few days ago in Budapest and really liked it, it had cinnamon and it was included in the sugar coating. What I got today was different, my chimney cake got a white sugar coating and inside it was smeared with caramel, my flavor choice. It didn't take long for the caramel to start making its way out the ends of the tube. There was no seating where we bought them so we ducked down a side street to tackle our treat. I seriously took on the challenge of keeping the caramel in check while I ate the loops of pastry. It was probably good but I was too busy trying not to make a mess, and mostly failed. My wife didn't realize what was happening with her white chocolate so when she moved a napkin she had as an unsuspecting stopper, well, she was less pleased. We just lacked the experience of eating it, so while we didn't have a 4 star experience, I'll take part of the responsibility for the resulting stickiness. It was very interesting watching how chimney cakes are made, and that in itself was worth stopping by. I see there are a few Trdelnik places listed on Yelp and none seem to match the one I visited. If you're reading this either you were scammed or you're lucky and haven't bought anything yet so be careful. The pastries here are fine; that isn't my real problem. They only take cash here and I only had dollars as I hadn't exchanged currency yet but they took it. However, then they proceeded to over charge me by twice the cost. When I added it up (they obviously thought I wouldn't) and told the woman at the front that she overcharged me, she got angry at me and lied about the exchange rate as if I were the one in the wrong. The customer service is so awful, and they scam Americans, so no average pastry is worth being conned in my opinion :) read more

THIS PASTRY IS MAGICAL. Upon first glance, it sort of looks like a cronut in a beehive shape. But it's almost, dare I say it, better than the famed NYC cronut. I'm not a huge fan of icing and filling, both of which are staple ingredients of most American pastries/pastries in general. The trdelnik is different: this impossible-to-pronounce dessert is made of leavened pastry dough covered in butter and sugar, and then lovingly wound around a stick to be slowly baked over a bed of hot coals. The sugar burns just enough to brown the pastry, and the dough, which is sort of like an Auntie Anne's cinnamon pretzel in terms of consistency, is warmed to perfection. Then, the artists who craft these amazing things carefully pull off the hot dough, making sure to retain its beehive shape, wrap a napkin around it, and hand it off to the lucky customers, eager to devour their treats. I don't even want to think about how many calories are in just one little beehive. The price for these babies ranges from about 40 to 60 Czech korunas, as far as I could tell, in the tourist area. We had them from two separate shops--one was a bakery, and the other was this street vendor near places selling hot wine (also amazing), and roasting pork knees and ham on a spit. read more

A must try while you're in Prague! Don't let it fool you, Trdelník is not a native Prague dish. It's mainly here because tourists love the sugar! But I'm not mad about it, it was still delicious. We saw a few reviews online that this place had the best so we decided to try it out. It was indeed delish. I only wish that we could have gotten a different flavor of gelato in it besides vanilla.
