The corn maze at Treinen Farm is nationally award-winning, and it's really no wonder! If you've never been to one or you know you enjoy corn mazes, this one is a must visit! The maze took us about 2.5 hours to complete. We did not work super efficiently though. This was us leisurely finding all of the mailboxes for the map pieces, 8 different types of hole punching poles, all of the pieces of the "mysterious classified challenge". You'll receive instructions when you get there about these "goals" of the maze. The goal is not to simply find your way out because that would be too boring! These tasks make it challenging! It not only forces you to go through the entire maze, it makes the entire experience a lot more fun! The whole concept is well thought out and well organized. You can expect to walk a lot, so wear some comfy shoes! They also have a nighttime option, where you walk the maze with flashlights. We didn't do it, but that would make this SO much harder!!! Could be fun for corn maze veterans! Before even going into the maze, we spent an extra 1.5 hours petting and feeding the animals outside (horses and goats) and visiting the pumpkin patches. That was pretty fun too! This place is truly a great bang for your buck! Before you go into the maze, I recommend buying their giant bag of kettle corn. It's one of the best I've ever had! It was lightly sweet and still perfectly salty. Plus, for $7, you receive an enormous bag that could easily be shared amongst 6 people! It was a great snack to eat while we walked the maze.

The Treinen corn maze is one of my favorite fall traditions. I have made a special trip every year over the last seven years (even after I moved from Madison to Milwaukee) just to complete the new maze and see what cool pattern they have dreamed up. I love that they have a variety of difficulties starting with the kids maze and ramping up to the hidden hole punches in the larger maze. We always try to find all the hole punches and if we have a large enough group split up into teams and race! The only downside is it can get really muddy if it's been a rainy week so wear shoes you don't mind getting dirty! They also usually have a variety of snacks and I always look forward to their apple cider donuts. The pumpkin selection has usually been good but obviously depends on how far into the season it is. This year they have added time windows and require signing up in advance to limit the number of people at a time. They also have some areas where they require masks and I felt like people were respecting the rules fairly well. They also added a little hike to an overlook that was cool. I liked getting to see the maze from above and get a glimpse of some fall foliage (although we were a bit after peak time).

Treinen has of the best corn mazes in Wisconsin! They change the design every year and take a picture of it from an aerial view so you can see all the corn mazes from the past. This year, the design was a bit swinging in a tree house. It was super fun to go through and feels like a treasure hunt. You go through the maze and try to find all the pieces of the map. You can tape them to your map as you go through and if you complete the maze, you get a prize from the prize station. They have a pumpkin patch and a large area for kids to play. It has slides, hay towers, swings, tires, farm animals, and more! I highly recommend bringing kids here if you have any. The only disappointing thing is they don't have their own homemade apple cider or hot chocolate. They also didn't have an donuts or much selection for food, other than kettle corn. For such a large farm and corn maze, I wish they had a better homemade food/drink selection. Overall, a must visit in the fall in Madison!

Ready to head into the maze! Envy the headlamps!

Went to the corn maze at night. It was delightfully spooky. Since we were there later, our group could not do many of the other activities(a shame, since they would have loved it) but they didn't seem to mind much.

The owners (2 Gals) were super friendly and interactive with us on any questions we asked. We loved hearing their story and how close the community around them is. On this street alone, you can hit a pumpkin patch and an apple picking farm all 5 minute drive from one another. They currently had a 'Yarn Hop' going on which we thought was so fun. With that, they really put standards in place for COVID safety precautions. At the front entrance, there was someone waiting to understand how many people were in your car (and if there were any children) so that they could contain crowds. Masks were worn and there is specific areas for parking marked. When we arrived, we were given a couple of carrot bags to feed the alpacas. They were all roaming, minding their own business eating the grass, but once you shake your plastic baggy of carrot goodness, they'll start walking to you instantly. They eat with their bottom teeth and are just the cutest things. I'm also extremely jealous of their eyelashes, extensions can't get you that amount of volume! Right next door, they have a another barn with their shop of goods, including honey/bee products. My friend got the alpaca gloves, another got the body butter, and I snagged a GalPaca shirt. There's lot to choose from and they're all labeled nicely. The cutest thing is, if you purchase yarn, there are the names of the specific alpaca it came from. So cute! Even though it's getting a little chillier, I would make my way out here to explore! A short 30-40 minutes from Madison and lots of other farms to see. You can also then go to more of the city area of Mt. Horeb afterwards.

It was well worth it to spend some time there and watch the alpacas! Right away as we pulled in, we were given a baggie of carrots and the alpacas perked right up and came straight to us at the gate. Seeing and feeding the alpacas was so much fun! GalPaca Farm Alpacas was very conscious of the pandemic and made sure to ask about the number of people we had in the car and to limit the amount of visitors to make the experience fun and safe for all. Definitely check out the store inside, they have a full variety of items like alpaca wool gloves, socks, and dryer balls. I picked up some wood cutting board balm and some solid lotion bars made in-home and I love using both on a daily basis. Hope to get back out there when the weather is warm again!

We had such a wonderful ride on the train today!!…read more The train follows the original 1850s rail bed, through beautiful Wisconsin forest land. If one wants an interior view of local flora & fauna, this is low energy, fantastic way to explore it! Children & adults (esp those who are children at heart!) will thrill at riding the small scale train. We loved watching the engine be turned around on the hand-operated round table. Our favorite part of the visit was the personal attention we received from Conductor Greg! We visited on a late summer Thursday afternoon when the rail was not as busy, and he treated us to a personalized narrated tour of the history of the railway as well as the fauna, flora, & major attractions of the area. Thank you so much, Greg!! All told, this & the Wisconsin Dells Boat Tours were the highlights of our trip! From a nature-loving local's perspective, some other great places to visit: Devil's Lake, Pewit's Nest, Parfrey's Glen, & the Chapel Gorge trail. If one is interested in Native American culture, there are mounds found at Man Mound Park & Kingsley Bend at Devil's Lake.

The good: - If you have kids up to age 12 yrs old, this is a fun place to visit. You get to ride a mini train with a real steam engine. - The train conductor is very knowledgeable of the train's mechanics and history. He is a wealth of knowledge. - They have a mini train station where one can board, then the train goes towards the woods for 1.5 miles. Then, you stop, and the conductor tells you a bit about the train's history and mechanics. Then, the kids get to help the conductor turn the engine, and you go back to the train station. - They have a toy train where kids can play back at the station. They also have a snack shop (pop corn, donuts, drinks, chips). - most of the staff are volunteers. You could really tell that they are passionate about trains. The needs improvement: - The sign to the entrance is easily missed. Keep a look out for it. - Land terrain is not paved. It is not wheelchair or stroller-friendly. - Not much shade. The kids' play area and tables have no shade at all. Be warned when you come by in the summer months. - The place needs landscaping. Lots of down trees. I understand they may be cleaning up after a storm in the place is run by volunteers. This place can use some TLC from gardeners, horticulture experts, and designers. We hope to go back in the fall when they have their pumpkinfest. I hope the place will be improved by then.

After doing some shopping at Tanger, I decided to pull in on my way home and pick some up. Green Thumb sells fresh produce, cider, and an array of baked goods, all of which looked pretty tasty. I grabbed a pack of donuts and a half-gallon of cider and went to check out. I tried to pay with a card, but the checker pulled out a sign that had gotten shoved aside that said I needed a $10 minimum. Ten dollars is about twice what I wanted to spend, but since I'd taken the time to pull off the highway I figured I might as well just suck it up and double my order. While I was deciding if I wanted more donuts and cider or if I should grab something else, the cashier bagged my order. I came back with a gallon of cider (instead of another half-gallon) and the woman seemed overly annoyed that she had to take the half-gallon out of the bag. Sorry I wanted to fork over more money to you, ma'am, instead of just leaving. If you'd had the sign out I would have fixed my order before trying to pay. She seemed kind of stressed out overall, so I'll just chalk it up to a bad day. The cider isn't my favorite, it's a little too grainy and tart. The cider donuts are good though, the texture is perfect and the cinnamon & sugar coating gives a nice little crunch. I wouldn't go out of my way to stop here again, but I may stop in again to grab donuts next time I head to the Dells.

Summary: Wet wood + terrible customer service = never doing business again!…read more We have purchased firewood from Green Thumb on two occasions. Last year (2013), we received 2 full cords of nice, dry firewood. It cost $300 per full cord: quite a premium versus other places in Madison, however being kiln dried and the fact that we were buying it in September (no chance to dry), we ponied up the extra cash. It took a few weeks for them to deliver because they said they had a big order for Walmart, but eventually it was delivered. It burned great and kept us warm. We were happy. Wet Wood: This year we purchased 1 cord of wood. The price went up $50/cord ($350/cord). When I tried to burn it in a high efficiency stove, it wouldn't even start. After testing 8 different pieces with a wood moisture probe tester, we found it was between 25-32% water. We tested the center of the wood so that ambient rain would not impact this testing. Green thumb claims 10-15% ON THEIR WEBSITE. Terrible Customer Service: We contacted Green Thumb hoping they would make it right. After more than a dozen phone calls where they argued that 30% is OK (which it's not) and that I must have selected only the biggest pieces to test, they finally agreed to replace the wood. Broken Promises: While they promised to replace the wood, they never did. They kept saying it would be replaced. Always "next week". It never was. We're stuck with their wet wood. Conclusion: We chose Green Thumb BECAUSE they were kiln dried and supposedly dry. Their wood was wet, end of story. They basically called me a liar on the phone. Their inconsistencies and POOR customer service will NEVER get our business again.

We chose…read morethis location because it offered a relaxing environment access a variety of activities write on the farm. We had no idea what to expect but good grief ... We were blown away! Upon arriving, we were not even sure we were in the right place. This was a very small family-owned farm and we thought we were going to a large commercial business. I was further confused because I had previously visited Provence France where the lavender Fields are miles and miles of purple in every direction. I was sure we were in the wrong place. However, we walked up to a small building and said hello to a young lady standing out front. It turned out we were in the right place and the young lady was the owner's daughter. This young lady, who appeared to be a young adult, stood and talk to us for a while. She welcomed us to the farm and told us we were free to roam around until they were ready with our activities. In the background, we could see someone busy moving around the property as if she relate for an important date. We happily walked off onto the property to get a good view of what was available. What an amazing property! There were miles and miles acres and acres (more than 40 acres of farmland). Every visitor is free to roam the farm until they are ready to leave, but many, we were told never take advantage of the opportunity. Unknown to us, when we first arrived, the farm is still recovering from a major flood 5 years ago where 90% of its lavender fields were wiped out. Our wonderful host explained their efforts to restore their lavender fields. Let me tell you about the amazing host. She calls herself MJ. She hails from Hawaii and says that most people do not correctly pronounce her name so she just shortened it as a kid to MJ. After our wonderful experience on her property, I will dub her Lady MJ, " The Amazing." During the off season, Lady MJ, her husband, and family tend to this farm to get it ready for the very short tourist season. She never knows until March. What the land will yield. Because she is a naturalist, she honors the land and uses holistic practices. Some of her offerings include a lavender facial, a lavender foot, soak, a lavender charcuterie lunch, a lavender picnic basket, and lavender spritzers. She has so many other things to offer on her property. This is a small family business so the entire family is involved. Currently, she is down a chef because her eldest daughter is away on a mission. The rest of the family, however, including the dog seems to be involved in the business. Lady MJ is the spark that keeps the business running. When you arrive you immediately experience time slowing down. There's no rush. There's no push to buy products. Everything just stops and you start to relax. My friend and I chose to do a foot soak, a facial, and the charcuterie board. Board. It was a package deal and we loved every minute of it. When we received our receipt, the time indicated was 1.5 hours for the entire package. Once we got there however, we ended up staying almost 7 hours. We actually wished there was a hotel on the property that we could have just stayed in. I might have even been willing to stay in a tent! If you have a chance to take a trip to a lavender field in Baraboo, Wisconsin, you absolutely must give up going to the larger commercial farms. Support this family! Lady MJ has an amazing product. However, her season is very short. We were lucky enough to be among the last visitors to the farm this season. She warned us to book next year and March. That's when she knows what her season will be and trust us, we will be looking for another wonderful experience at Rowley Creek Lavender Farm! When you come, plan to stay. Abandon your cares. Abandon your plans. Just relax and enjoy the stay. Lady MJ and her family will make you feel welcome just by being there with you. She is truly an amazing woman. I have no idea how she does all the things she does but I'm super glad that she does! Thank you lady MJ! We can't wait to come back next year! We wish your whole family a restorative off season. You're amazing people are we're glad we chose Rowley Creek Lavender Farm! See you next year!!!

The store itself has so many lavender products and a good number of items direct from the farm. I also highly recommend the homemade lavender scones which are freshly baked and so delicious. I believe they require/recommend purchasing a farm visit pass prior to going, it's $5 per car and can be used towards your purchase of $10 or more in the store.
