Just north of the ghost-town of Paxson (sad!) lies a little slice of the mighty Alaska Range. A subrange known as "The Deltas".
The Deltas are unique because they are the only part of the Alaska Range that can be easily accessed on foot, by plebians such as myself.
Spring is probably the best time to access these peaks. It's not brutally cold, but there's still enough snow left to make travel on the glaciers and climbing up the friable rock more tolerable.
Triangle Peak is a pretty straightforward objective: go up the Castner Glacier till it forks right, make camp, wake up early, follow the nearby ridge to the summit of Triangle.
The whole glacier part is easier said than done. Not so much because there are crevasses (there are pretty much none) but because this glacier is covered in various levels of dirt, mud, and vegetation. Yep, in Alaska, the glaciers have brush growing up out of them!
In the summer, it's a much hop. In spring, skies or snowshoes are mandatory, unless you worship the god of suffering.
The one point of caution for accessing this summit is to be aware fo the cornices you encounter along the way. Most notable is the massive "death cornice" near the summit. DO NOT VENTURE TOO FAR OFF ONTO THE RIDGES!
Views from the top are excellent. Now I want to climb nearby White Princess.
This mountain would be most comfortably climbed in a 3-day weekend from Anchorage. We did it on a 2-day weekend and it was brutal, but doable. read more
