I'm doing my second ROAD review, how exciting!
The Richardson Hwy is one of the lesser traveled of the major paved roads in Alaska, emphasis on paved. It runs from Valdez to Fairbanks. The leg from Valdez to Delta Junction is known as Alaska Route 4 (AK-4) while the leg from Delta Junction to Fairbanks is Alaska Route 2 (AK-2).
There are tons of things to do and see off the Richardson:
- Massive waterfalls near Valdez
- Roadside glacier near Valdez
- turnoff to the largely unpaved Denali Hwy at Paxson Junction
- Views of glaciers and the eastern Alaska Range and the Delta Range from Paxson to Delta Junction
- If you're adventurous, there are remote huts accessible in the Delta Range!
- Look out for moose as you get closer to Delta Junction!
- Ogle the pipeline snaking beside you north of Delta Junction
There are not a lot of tourist activities on the Richardson. There are many long stretches with no food or restroom options, be prepared! My favorite secret spot is the Tangle River Inn: http://www.yelp.com/biz/tangle-river-inn-delta-junction read more
