You can also watch the sunset over Miramare Castle from the hotel, which was so beautiful. The lobby is small when you first walk in, but the staff is very friendly and accommodating. I was on the third floor with a balcony. Note that not all rooms have balconies, so call or email to check when you make your reservation. As I mentioned, this hotel is right on the water. It is about a 50Euro taxi ride from the airport. Miramare castle is within walking distance. You can take a public bus straight from the hotel to city center, but note that Trieste city center is not really within walking distance. The hotel has a continental breakfast included, and it is incredible. It was the best breakfast I have ever had, and the best cappuccino ever. I wish I could live there - just to eat that breakfast everyday. The room was small, but had everything I needed. The bed was pretty uncomfortable. In fact the bed would be my only complaint, but the view and delicious breakfast more than made up for it.

We were pleasantly surprised by the kind desk manager providing us with an unsolicited room upgrade on the second floor with massive windows, tons of space and a modern bath. In fact this hotel housed in a historic building of a former insurance company has an impressive exterior and entrance along with an imposing statue with three lions just behind the front desk. Our rate included a decent breakfast buffet in the price as well. Because of the age of the building, street noise (tons of scooters) was a bit of an issue but I always travel with ear plugs so not really an issue for me. Bed was nice pillows thin and a bit too firm for my tastes. Another plus was location; away from the bust cruise ships towering over everything and a short walk to restaurants and sights. In a historic building (what isn't a historic building in Trieste?!), it's quite beautiful and doesn't have a chain hotel feel. The room was large and nice (could maybe use a fresh coat of paint, but other than that, a very pretty room). The location was great - walkable to everything we wanted to see on our day in Trieste - and you have access to an offsite parking garage (they park your car for you). In a city like Trieste (lots of traffic and crazy difficult parking), it was great to be able to drop off our car and walk around for the day. The breakfast buffet was quite nice (that huge chunk of Parmesan made my morning), and the customer service was really great. Overall, I'm happy we stayed here.

We stopped at the newspaper stand in the train station and bought a ten strip bus ticket, and also purchased a "HopTour" 24hour ticket. Easy transportation from Golden Rooms to the Barcola and further up to the Costello Miramare on Bus 6, the stop is about one block back toward the train station from Golden Rooms. Our room was huge, not something you find at every B&B in Europe. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was amazing. Really strong water pressure, another rarity. Best of all for us though is the in room air conditioner. The breakfast was a good way to start the day. Super friendly hosts (English is not their first language so be patient). But they treated us like family. If we ever return to Trieste, we will stay at the Golden Rooms again. It was a great place to stay for our two nights in this lovely coastal city.

You find mostly mom and pop names and little hotels. I decided I would give The Sam Hotel a try after finding it and booking it on Expedia. Some of the things I wanted were a reception desk that is open 24 hours and the basic hotel things. I was presently surprised of The Sam Hotel. It was nice and big and met most of my expectations. When you walk into The Sam its not the nicest entry way. They have a desk, a small computer area, and a little shop to get coffee. The women who work the front desk are nice. I would say that it says that they speak English and both the morning and night person do not speak very good English. Also the morning person is a little rude. The rooms are nice and pretty big. They come with beds where you have 1 bed, 2 beds or even 3 beds. It would be easy to accommodate if you had a big group. The bathrooms are big, but the shower is very small. I am a big guy an had a really hard time fitting in the shower. The toilet did have a bidet but I was too nervous to use it. I had never used one before. The hotel does offer breakfast but it is all sweet and no eggs, bacon, or anything like that. It is mostly bread products. They offer a wake up call which is nice. They will call cabs for you. They have an agreement with a cab company and that company does charge a little more than others. Overall this is a nice hotel. It is close to a grocery store, restaurants, and a bank. Its about a 10 minute drive to the airport and about 30 minutes to Trieste. It was a nice small little town. I am glad I stayed there and I would book this property again!
