I absolutely…read moreloved that the diversity of the congregation was reflected back to us by the men and women serving on the altar and in the choir. There was a trail mix of Americans, Asians, Africans, and Hispanics, from young to old, dressed in everything between casual flip-flops to carefully-coiffed headdresses. Today's sermon was given by a guest priest, Father Joseph Nguyen. He incorporated many elements of a good sermon by using a real narrative (Buzz Aldrin's comMOONion) to relate and relay the gospel into our modern lives. The potency of the message, however, starts to wear off after about two anecdotes. An important element of GREAT sermons that some priests forget to factor in is brevity. Ten (or an absolute max of 15) minutes is all you really have, fathers. After that, your flock gets fidgety, and "too tired to be inspired."

I've struggled for the longest time finding a church where everyone was accepted AND the message was intellectually stimulating. Pastor Douglas is warm, emotional, and highly intelligent. I was having some doubts in my faith and that man spent over 4 hours on a Saturday talking me through them with me. Much of the congregating is gay or lesbian, which is awesome. Unlike some of the other affirming congregations in the metroplex, they don't spend the whole time talking about "gay issues." Sermons are about Scriputre, not sociopolitical issues. So uplifting. So refreshing. So filling. I look forward to watching this special place grow, not just among the LGBT community but the White Rock community at large. Check it out!

Nurturing spirits, confirming human dignity, living our progressive values and giving back to the community, these are ideas I aspire to, which this church embodies. A few months after joining the sanctuary choir, though, I was surprised to find myself feeling more and more at home throughout the church (not just in the choir loft). The Unitarian church is not like other churches. For those of you who don't know anything about it, a good place to start is our principles: * The inherent worth and dignity of every person; * Justice, equity and compassion in human relations; * Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations; * A free and responsible search for truth and meaning; * The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large; * The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all; * Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part. The priest was in so much rush he probably lasted less than 5 mins there and didn't address us with one prayer as a family not even the immediate family. Very disappointed.
