The way he preaches is quite off since he is always off topic, brags about his accomplishments a lot and say something offensive to people that many people weren't happy about. Plus, he always looks how much money we put in for the mass collection and even times, he upsets people when he is pushy and pressures people to do his way of something when operating the mass. The music is disappointing because the woman who sings there, doesn't put her heart into the songs. She was the only one that sings with the pianist. A lot of people I knew who were in that community and myself had to turn away from this church ever since Ato operates the church weirdly. Even there is one time, I came to mass and there's only 4 people left. Where there's no music, no positivity and all. Ato said something offensive that triggers me when he preaches and the prayers is very different compare to the original prayers that we normally pray. I felt so lost and everything wasn't aligned. My friends of other or no faith have always been welcomed with open arms, not hate, and have expressed they would be willing to return as a result. Their children's programming encourages thoughtful insight and questioning, their choir program seeks to engage and explore Christ through song, and the sermons pave a path towards a deeper relationship with the Lord. They offer a loving hand through life and seek to have their congregants develop both inside the church walls and outside. I especially adore their commitment to outreach and mission, helping all brothers and sisters in life.

As I entered a parishioner was also entering. I asked what time Mass started. She said there wasn't mass but there is prayer service in the chapel inside the church. She pointed to our left. I asked if I was allowed in the main church to sit. She said "sure". I felt welcome. Here's the key as I live and learn. When I went to Yelp to check in I realized this is an Episcopal Church. It's very plain compared to Catholic. It's beautiful in its own way. I felt comfortable in the empty space. I wandered over to the chapel. About eight people were gathered for the prayer service. At this time I decided to leave quietly not to bring attention to myself. I felt this day rather lonely that's why I stopped into a church along the way..... I decided today was a day to go where there were familiar faces that see me most days. I may return to attend a prayer service at St. James. I'm always learning. There's a long history to be learned about this location as well as friendly people here. They're open and welcoming to new faces.

The beauty of the roof interested me to see what looks like inside of the church. So, one day during lunch break when I passed by, I found the church is open for prayers and I sneaked in. Since then, this place has become my secret shrine to practice meditation before lunch. It's tranquil, quiet, and neat inside, contrasting sharply with Park Ave South outside. This further interested me to see what kind of people usually fill this church. So on a Sunday morning, I pulled myself up early to sneak in again for a service. As religiously confused and blind, I couldn't understand fully what Rector Jacob Smith was saying in his speech. But my mind was still blown by his public speaking skills. I was fully attracted to the way he presented, cracked jokes, and handled a crying baby in the audience gracefully. It was fascinating just sitting there listening. The other rectors also speak so articulately. Listening to them speaking English is much more smoothing and relaxing than listening to Anderson Cooper on CNN. I don't know why. I felt so grateful that the church is open to accept people like me who had secretly turned the worships and sermons into personal English-learning sessions. Those passionate, well-educated, and kind people in this church are just like fine crystals.

I think it's a tad weird that the choir stays behind the pastor for the entire service and that the music director sits with his back to the pastor and congregation for the entire service. The small congregation of 60-70 people are spread out over the beautiful space making the place seem pretty empty which is a little off putting. The only real disappointing thing about this church is that the two times I've been here the sermon has been 13-15minutes long. I don't know if Pastor Sparks thinks that keeping a sermon shockingly short is going to keep the typical busy and impatient New Yorkers coming back to squeeze in a Sunday morning service or if she can't think of enough things to preach about but I was trying to find a church who took their time to share the word of God and have a normal 30-40 minute sermon and I'll be checking out some more churches to find something more of that nature.

I was a member in the 1980's and 90's when I lived in NY. I took my daughter to visit in the Fall…read moreof 2022, and some of the same members were still there. That shows dedication and family. I was active in their needle exchange program at the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and they continue to do wonderful works of social justice. Someone else commented they were atheist and felt welcome at Judson. It is open and welcoming to all. They still display art gifted by Yoko Ono in the 80's if memory serves. Old and new merge at Judson, and I wish I could find a church even half as spiritual, warm, and caring since I've moved to the Bible belt, but there is nowhere like it. Judson is dually aligned with ABC and UCC denominations. I miss y'all!

I'm an atheist, and I dig this church…read more Judson was founded as a Baptist church in 1890 and--according to its website--is dually-aligned with the American Baptist Church and the United Church of Christ. Importantly, they welcome everyone, and host community events such as the Really Really Free Market (last Sunday of the month) and various community performance projects. In 1999, Rev. Billy put on a week-long extravaganza here called "Millenium's Neighborhood." At its founding, it was an important source of drinking water for the neighborhood; Judson sought to bring together the riff-raff of the immigrant class and the wealthy people north of Washington Square. As a matter off fact, Judson's community-oriented work dates back at least to the 1950s. The most recent event I attended at Judson was a memorial for a HIV-positive transsexual equestrienne which featured a few nudes of her in the slide show. Candles were arranged in a horseshoe shape, and the whole event was not only well-attended but incredibly moving. Judson is a church Christ himself would have been glad to be a member of!
