Times Square Church - A Sanctuary in the Heart of the City (with the Best Choir and the Sweetest Ushers) I've been attending Times Square Church for 12 years now, and honestly--I'm still as moved today as I was the very first time I walked in. I'll never forget it: I was welcomed by an usher who gave me the kind of hug that said, "You're home now." No side-eyes, no judgment--just love, warmth, and a seat in a beautiful space where I could experience the service at my own pace (and catch my breath from walking through Times Square--because whew). The music? Absolutely incredible. The choir will have you praising, swaying, and maybe even forgetting you're wearing those new shoes that weren't made for dancing. It's joyful, powerful, and real--and you don't need to know the words to feel the Spirit. Services are held at 10 AM and 1 PM, so whether you're an early bird or the kind who needs that second cup of coffee (no judgment--I've been both), there's room for you. And yes--they even have discounted parking if you get your ticket stamped. Because even in New York, Jesus is still helping you save. From programs for children to ministries for adults, the church is full of life, love, and purpose. Everyone is treated with kindness and respect. It's a place where people grow, laugh, cry, heal--and worship together. So if you're looking for a church that feels like family, sounds like heaven, and welcomes you just as you are--come through. Since David Wilkerson and William Carrol died, they got rid of the choir and the elders sitting on the stage, and the 3pm and 6pm services, with wonderfully varied brilliant sermons. They then 'renovated', with bright horrific tacky projections, and cheesy showy music, competing with TV churches amd Times Square tackiness, and l have since been completely thoroughly turned off. The church doesn't seem serious anymore, and l simply can't bear it anymore. Completely worldly and a big turnoff now :/ .. No more teaching, and Christ's spirit is impossible to sense anymore :/ read more

Some years ago I was attending Times Square Church and one day sat by a black "sister." I started a conversation and she didn't respond. Thinking she didn't hear me, I repeated myself. She snapped back at me. I was shocked. I moved to the seat in front of me and sat by a friend. She told me her sister had just died. Wow, what an excuse for lashing out at a sister in Christ who wants to be friendly with you. What a poor example of being light in the world. She also sings in the choir. I was LOVING the music and worship and thought I *finally* found a good church in New York City. But I was shocked when the pastor suddenly started railing against gays right in the middle of his sermon. A very uneasy, awkward silence fell over the congregation as the pastor rambled on about "the lifestyle" and attacked the idea of "accepting sin." It was very clear that the preaching isn't intended for the home crowd, but for the wealthy donors who decide what gets preached from that pulpit. What's more, this church has that uncomfortable, "cult-like" feeling that is often found in the air of many Pentecostal churches, and something is definitely wrong in this place. read more

Wow. I stayed in NYC for a month and I'm so sad I didn't get to this church till the last Sunday. They have incredible worship and Pastor Tim is the best preacher I've had the pleasure of listening to. I was honestly surprised to find a church that was so... honest about God and what Christianity really stands for, especially during these times and ESPECIALLY in New York City. The other church we tried was not as much. A breathe of fresh air. The people here are kind as well! I want to move to New York just so I can attend this church! Times Square Church is one of the most recognizable churches in the NYC area. A result of the late founder David Wilkerson. His autobiographical account of how God had called this man back into ministry, after retirement, in his book and then later movie, The Cross and the Switchblade; put this church on the map. Currently the Senior Pastor is Tim Dilena. The General Overseer, Carter Conlon. On the church's website it's described as being an interdenominational church... that information isn't accurate since they have a very strong sense of holding to a specific set of Protestant church doctrines, which is not inclusive of Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox nor Anglican. This church is not apologetic over being charismatic, which many non charismatic churches would not embrace this congregation, such as Baptist or Reformed. It should be noted that charismatic is not a denomination. It is the belief that God still does the same things today like in the early church, such as healing, prophecy and speaking in tongues. That's why various denominations can be charismatic, such as Lutherans, Presbyterian, Methodist, etc. Charismatic is not a style of worship nor is an agreement upon everything that goes on under the charismatic umbrella. As far as Times Square Church goes, it's one of the few mega churches in NYC. If you want a seat up front or even in the mid section, come early. It's also hard to meet people, due to its size. Those seeking to interact with other attendees in the church, should take part with the other ministries going on in the church. Their website provides all the different activities going on. It took me over 4 years to finally make the trip to this church. Either it was too cold outside, or it was too far, or I was tired...I just always pushed it off. What I like about the church is that they offer several church services throughout the week (Sun, Tue, Fri). I am NOT a Sunday church person so this schedule works well for me. Also, I am not the kind who wants to get dressed up to go to church. Why can't I just roll in there with my jeans & sandals on without getting crazy judgmental looks from people? I'm there to pray, not partake in a fashion show! Well, at TSC I can roll in with my jeans and sandals on and not get crazy looks. I also liked the diversity of those in attendance. Different people from different walks of life. The guy who sat next to me was bathed in alcohol...and when he sat down next to me one of the first things he said was "I really needed this" (meaning he needs the church, not the liquor). Next week I will try to attend the Young Adult section to see what that is about. I hope they have something catered to me and what people in my age range are coping/dealing with. The sermons are typically 2hrs long. When I arrived at the 7pm service on a Friday, they sang for maybe the first 30-40mins. This was new to me, and after a while I thought they were just going to sing all night and not preach. Eventually they made some quick announcements, sang some more and then began the sermon roughly about 1hr after I arrived. Not sure if this is how they always operate, but if you want to just hear the preaching then arrive towards the start of the second hour. I haven't been to church in a LONG LONG while when the pastor said to turn to Hebrew chapter __ verse ___, WOW I didn't even know if that was in the new or old testament. I had to secretly flip to the table of contents to find out exactly where this fell. It's a shame, i use to know this when I was younger. I hoped no one saw me looking at the table of contents. ...hey, at least I own a bible! I hope to revisit this place and make a better attempt to go in the future months. I'm not a die hard religious person but i do believe that there is some divine entity out there.... Oh so why not a 5 stars? I am not a person who goes to church regularly, but when I do want to visit the lords house this is the only place in all of New York City or better state, where I feel at peace with myself. I recommend TSC to all my friends, whenever I have the opportunity. I found TSC because the catholic church refused my little girl baptism due to me being a single mother. I had ran out of options and my friend said, "I have the perfect house for you and your daughter." They accepted us and my daughter was baptized the same week. Having been a Southern Baptist for 58 years I can witness from my Heart that the HolySpirit was alive and present today at TSC! The congregation was there to praise and worship from the second the service began. What a wonderful spirit among Gods people of many ethnic backgrounds. I like this church and I DONT listen to the NEGATIVE. I LOVE JESUS and that is all. Church is great BUT the relationship with the LORD if the most important thing to have. I will lile to start off by saying, that many will accuse my review of be of the devil as many have on their facebook page before they without any warning blocked me from the facebook page. I am convinced after watching and viairing or listening online, that this church has changed in a dramatic way. I see in this church a love for pastor carter that anyone who questions anything the pastor says, they are cut off. For me it was because I disagreed with Carter's Sunday message on discernment. Where in discernment we shouldn't call out a name of a rightfully wring and false teacher. I remember on several occasions Pastor David calling out by name false teachers. One time I remember was Benny Hinn, when he cursed those who speak against his ministry. I dont see this church as a biblically sound church as of recent. I see Ecumenical, Centering prayer practices and a tolerance fpr error. I would be cousions with abusive leadership practices, that teach you not to ask questions or even challenge a leader. This is one of the signs of a cult. I am not saying they are a cult, but they are showing signs of dabbling. I also am extremely concerned that some members trust in man more than the scriptures. Some fail to see Billy Graham as a false teacher or the beloced Beth Moore, which I discover was a women's bible study material at tsc. I am saddened that they just cut my facebook page without aby warning. I have contributed nothing but scriptural truthes and observations. The love of error is greater i guess. Be clear that this church and the leadership here choose to follow the true teachings of Jesus and the Bible. The leadership is always sure to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit. Experience God and His presence for yourself and come just as you are. You are welcome here. I have brought friends with me who were not Christian before and even they admitted afterward that they felt the presence of God here. Just like many people even had the audacity to say that Jesus was doing miracles and casting out demons in the name of the devil so we see many critics speak evil of the work of God today. Although I was on time, it was late to get a seat. Nonetheless, standing through out the entire service was easy. David Wilkerson, The Founder & Author of 'The Cross & The Switch Blade' didn't preach, but he was on the platform. The Senior Minister preached with an authority I haven't heard in over 35 years. Seriously, it felt like the building was shaking, such was the weight of his message. A moving and life changing encounter, and one I highly recommend for any earnest seeker for the authentic authority of the Holy Spirit. read more

This is not only a very good church to go to but the decors are very well entertaining too. Better come a little bit earlier for the service so that you can get seats inside the sanctuary. But in case you come late they have an annex that accommodates seats but you will be watching from a big projection screen. The afternoon three o'clock service is usually the best and not too crowded in case you dont make the morning or too late for the evening. Take the local N- R trains to 49th street and walk about three blocks up and one block to broadway. There is a starbucks in front where you can buy coffee after service or if your hungry they do have Mcdonalds right beside it and also its in the middle of Times Square! lol read more

I've never been to a church so culturally diversified, people so united, and a service so passionately delivered to us all! This church is too bland for me. I only go when invited because it's conveniently located. I don't get anything from it spiritually. But I do love the theatrical decor. The last time I went, the speaker was talking about how he wanted to beat somebody up. Weird. And a diverse congregation doesn't equal diversity. I've found that with diverse churches there's a very Western American (vanilla) culture with people from various countries who prefer leadership from that group. Coming from a tiny pentacostal church, I was overwhelmed with such diversity/culture in this church. This church is huuuge & the people are great. There are so many ministries so TSC will definently keep you busy. I am brand new to the church so just observing for the most part but If youre looking to fellowship with other believers from different walks of life than this is the place! The services seem more like concerts instead of just a church service. Very commercial. If ur looking for a one on one more personal setting with your pastor, need deliverance, etc than this is NOT the church for you. Mega church for sure read more

An update since my last review. I still follow the worldwide prayer meetings which are truly led by the Holy Spirit. However, I've left my previous connect groups at TSC. Some Christians can be the most hypocritical people. In a crisis, there is little practical help but be prepared for endless drama and extremely harsh judgements on your faith. Scriptures are manipulated to blindly rebuke you without proper understanding of your situation. You will hear criticisms such as "you are unfit to be a Christian", "you are unworthy of Jesus because He died on the cross for you, which man would do that for you". Some of the connect group leaders are fanatic and bigoted fundamentalists. The church body is very big and due to lack of proper controls, you may encounter extremist individuals in the smaller connect groups. I blocked few of them from contacting me to escape the vicious cycle of spiritual and emotional abuse. Some are mentally unstable from past trauma but stubbornly refuse to seek psychiatric help or psychological counselling (even from church). In the process they traumatize and burden fellow connect group members. To any believers suffering out there, please have the courage and clarity of mind to walk out of any toxic church circles. If anyone pushes you to stay, it is a lie. Jesus did not establish His body of Christ to behave this way. read more

A very unique place indeed. A place chosen by the Lord back in the day. Today it continues, faithful to the gospel with a message going forth based on the word of God, CLEARLY. The Holy Spirit is alive in the place, through its worship and in the teaching. There is an air of absolute Humility in leadership. It is unmistakable. I have yet to visit, only enjoying this ministry via the internet. As an EX-New Yorker I can't wait to stop by and enjoy, but in the meanwhile I can use this forum to encourage others to give it a shot. I would expect its hard to get a seat if you are used to arriving near the start time. Do your research to find out how busy it is, given that the building while stunningly beautiful, is not HUGE. BTW its beautiful not because they want it that way but by the requirements of the original transaction...it used to be the Mark Helinger Theatre and I believe the story goes that as a part of the sale the essence of the theatre was to be maintained. TSC was happy to do so given its potential impact in the community. I am sure, TSC would meet in a tent, this is their spirit of humility, but they are blessed by an amazing God to have a place like this, in the greatest city in the world. Where else do you see a church receive $1,000,000 to feed the poor in NYC and see leadership decide to give $1,000 to each of a thousand local CHURCHES to do with it what they want. Don't go and expect to receive a soft word to calm your earthly fears. This is a teaching place, using the word of God to mobilize people, I have been challenged many times by the teaching by Carter and others. This season, since 9/11, is one of teaching the body to have a burden - a true burden - to be faithful in your walk because we are all examples of the gospel. RUN FOR YOUR LIFE is a message like this, immediately following up 9/11, this message is clear. If hell is real, and those in your life do not know the safety and eternity that is in HEAVEN, you should run to them, have a burden to share, just like the NY Fire Department heroes did when they ran into the Towers that day, telling everyone they know, to run for their lives, knowing theirs was in danger. I really love this church. For such a big church, it has a community feeling to it. The choir is amazing and the soloists are awesome. The message is not about us having God shaped vacuums in our hearts, it's often about going out their and spreading the word and repentance. Really good Pastors. The only issue I have, is that it can be difficult to get a seat if you don't come early. I came one time 45 minutes before service and that was a big mistake for the 10AM service. I ended up getting a seat at 10:05 upfront, but I think it is best to aim for 1 hr earlier, or if you are with a family or a partner and don't want to get separated even earlier. Sunday at 3pm is easier and Tuesday at 7 is a breeze to get a seat. read more
