We consider ourselves savvy travelers booking everything on line and not necessarily believe a lot of reviews. But after several trips and getting up there in age we started buying trip & car insurance. Several trips to Europe, Australia and other countries we now only buy through The Ins. I have spoken to Steve Dasseos, the owner, several times while researching trip cancelation insurance for my husband and myself -- and also for my mother. Steve (and the other employees I've spoken to) are really knowledgeable about the fine print in the policies sold and have helped me decide which policy to purchase. We have purchased policies through him on 3 or 4 occasions. Fortunately, we have not personally needed to file a claim yet, but I can tell from the support they offer post-purchase that they would be very good advocates for valid claims. I know that travel insurance is considered a "Named Risk" type of coverage, so it's especially important not to make any assumptions about what is covered by extrapolating from stated covered risks. (E.G. Don't assume you can change your trip around due to a terrorist incident and still collect under a policy's "cancel for any reason" coverage. Trip Cancelation is not the same thing as Trip Change!) Having underwritten individual health insurance myself, I understand more about pre-existing condition coverage and waivers than most, but Steve opened my eyes to important differences between the language in different policies. Here are a couple of examples: A) My husband & I have mothers in their 70's and 80's, so I needed to confirm that a flair up of *their* P/E conditions would be covered if we had to cancel or interrupt our trip. Some policies will waive P/E conditions of non-traveling family members, but some do not. B) We also take prescription (cholesterol & BP) meds, so it was important to know the time limit each policy imposed for any changes in RX dosing to be considered as an excluded pre-existing condition. Details like this are what make me call Steve when we need insurance. Steve even advised me NOT to buy insurance for one trip because our existing coverage (annual MedJet Assist for evac & US group health insurance for urgent care) was adequate. That phone call COST him time and didn't earn him any commission. One great suggestion Steve or one of his employees made was for me to consider buying separate policies for my husband and myself for a particularly expensive international trip. For the extra $7 policy fee, we doubled our medical coverage. This was for a policy -- CSA FreeStyle, I think -- that offers the medical coverage as a total "per policy" instead of "per person". When I'm considering trip insurance, my first step is to go to the TripInsurance.com website and fill out a quote form. I then CALL them to get advice, based on the submitted quote. They represent many travel insurance companies and they know which policy/company is the best fit given your needs. They simplify the process dramatically. Until last year, I had thought of trip insurance as something we needed for reimbursement of prepaid, non-refundable vacation expenses - just in case we had to cancel a trip for some reason. I was putting yet another policy in place for an upcoming trip when Steve asked about our last vacation. I said that it had been wonderful except for the fact that while we were on vacation, my husband had been hit by a car while bicycling and had ended up in the ER with 3 broken ribs.
