I was developing a plan...cheese, some pepperoni, maybe a glass of wine...in my hotel...why not, eh? As I sat down in my hotel at the Kelowna Airport, cut up some of the cheese, opened the package of pepperoni...ummm, the cheese was fantastic, but wait...my mouth and throat are burning...what the devil is this? I tried to eat the pepperoni thinking that maybe it was the smoked cheese, but wait...reading the pepperoni package, apparently I missed the "Big red type" stating "FIRE HOT"...holy smokes. Let me say, the smoked cheese was yummy, very tasty. However, my error with choices for the pepperoni were a problem for me. It was so spicy hot that I just couldn't eat it. I'll read the package a little better next time.

Raised on a farm, I know what fresh milk, churned butter, fresh cream, and homesteader's cheese tastes like and there is nothing on the market that I've sampled that even comes close to it as this cheese does. The ooy gooy melt of this cheese has points for flavor and for texture and consistency. I personally love cheese and can appreciate a good cheese when I taste it. I've traveled North America, Europe and Asia - this cheese is now my choice staple cheese for all of my cheese casseroles, pizzas, cheese bread, grilled cheese sandwiches, paninis, omelettes and cheese plates. I highly recommend you testing your favorite cheddar or any other cheddar cheese product against Okanagan's Choice Cheese, and coming back and telling me what you think, yourself. As far as cheeses go it was rubbery and felt heavily processed, not what I expected from a local cheese factory. If you like Kraft cheese well that would be fine. I expected something more like a New Zealand Kirkland Cheddar and that it is not. Maybe the factory does a proper crumbly cheddar but the promotional product is just that. American style cheese.

I've been afraid of bees since I was stung once when I was little. I still am…read more However, visiting the honey farm on the annual Day of the Honeybee held in Kelowna gave me a better understanding of the behavior of bees. They had honey tasting; my favorite is the cinnamon and lavender flavors. They had wines from Tantalus Vineyards, one of the vineyards where they loan their bees to continuously pollinate the grape vines, they also had a tour of the farm, where the master beekeeper takes out the bee hive from a box and does a little bit of show and tell. But the best part was a group to one conversation with the master bee keeper, who has been taking care of bees for 25 years. She told us that bees are, in fact, endangered and that we shouldn't be pulling out the dandelions from our yard, because it helps sustain the environment for bees. I learned that bees won't sting unless it's for a very good reason, because they die, when their stinger is pulled away from their body. We had a wonderful time, getting educated. But that didn't stop us from swerving on the road when we found out a bee hitched a ride with us in the car. Don't worry, he was let out unharmed.

A sweet, young girl the only person there, and she confessed to being very, very new - first-week-on-the-job new - which meant that we were not going to get much information out of her. I asked if they offered tours of the farm, and they do not. There is a small viewing deck beside the shop, but it was simply not the type of viewing you'd expect on an actual honey farm. We thought to ourselves: "We've seen bees... Let's just get the honey and scram." And so we did. There is a set-up in the middle of the shop, a tasting station if you will. All the different kinds of honey were laid out in little jars along with a container of tasting picks. The flavours were interesting. Besides natural honey, they had Vanilla, Ginger, Cinnamon, Wildflower, etc. We tasted every flavour, and settled on the Wildflower honey. When it comes to honey, I just want the natural honey taste. The Wildflower gave the natural honey just a touch of floral scent, which was fine by me. With that said, all the flavourings used are real and natural - or so we were told! The jar of Wildflower honey has been tasty and good so far. I'm enjoying little spoonfuls with my tea everyday.

So on the chance, I phoned them and asked them to create from a selection of the best of the Charcuterie with a few baguettes and deliver them to my daughter nearby. Clare (the manager/owner) did us proud with a selection of wonderful cheeses, pates, sausages and baguettes plus a fois gras mousse than my daughter described as "EPIC" The result is my distant family think I am an OK Dad and Charcuterie Totoche are my new best friends.
