We have tried other daycare centers but none even come close to the program and staff at Happy Faces ELC. The certified staff takes continuing education courses in early childhood education/development to maintain their credentials and they're so knowledgeable, very professional, firm but fair, and all the kids have fun and learn about all kinds of things. A normal school day for children is to arrive bright and early between 6:00 - 7:00am, they play in whatever educational center they chose (computers, housekeeping, blocks, library area, etc) until it's time to go to school. Mr. Tim drives the children to school in the Happy Faces new 14 passenger van. When they get out of school, Mr. Tim is there to pick them up and take them safely back to Happy Faces. When they arrive, they have time to wind down and eat a snack, then they start their homework. After homework is finished, the children enjoy free time playing outside with the other children, entertaining themselves in one of the learning centers, reading a book or playing an educational game the teacher has prepared/set-up. Happy Faces ELC's Summer Program is exciting, educational and most of all fun! When I pick her up, she just can't stop talking about all the exciting things she did that day. Our grand-daughter especially likes the field trips to: bowling, skating, parks, museums, swimming, movies and more!!! On non-field trip days, Happy Faces has special guests stop by to educate and entertain the children like: a mobile petting zoo, clowns, magicians, police officers, fire fighters, and more! Our family has been apart of the Children's House Montessori Alexandria Campus for a year. Our…read morechild has just completed their time with the toddler program at CHMS, and they have recently moved to the preschool program. We have been in awe of the progress they has shown in their independence, confidence, and communication. Thanks to the thoughtfully curated Montessori environment at school, we find our child taking pride in their ability to do things on their own, such as putting on shoes, cleaning up a mess, and using the potty. They are also able to more clearly articulate their needs, wants, and questions with more patience and manners. All of these are taught and reinforced daily at CHMS. We have also genuinely appreciated the care and attention that all staff members have shown our family. Staff is quick to communicate with us via the Brightwheel app, a phone call, or at pick up or drop off. From the monthly playdates hosted at the school in the warmer months, the schoolwide picnics and pizza parties, and the multiple opportunities to visit the classrooms, we have felt like true members of the CHMS community. We have been so grateful for our experience, and we are excited to see how our child continues to grow.

My two sons have thrived in ways that are less measurable and far more important than anything we noted when they were in "regular" school. The truth is that compulsory education tends to focus on relatively arbitrary facts which might be memorized for a test, but are in no way a good measure of intelligence, well-being, or future success. When youth are trusted to find their own passions, they dive into learnings they cannot simply forget. They aren't forced to stay any longer than they wish to in any one subject, which reduces the risk that they will lose their natural love of learning or burn out. All in good time, students dive again, as desired, and in this organic way, they build a much more solid knowledge-base over time. Rather than simply learning facts, they continue to find out who they are, and to build their own paths towards their own goals. The "kids" here seem to maximize their own individual social-emotional skills, learned naturally through the democratic nature of the school and the peer feedback therein. Facts can be learned anytime (and are), but character is best build in our early years of development. Fairhaven provides just that--a fair haven--within which youth can develop this character. A place where youth take all the time they need to heal from any past school-related trauma, learn to re-find a love of learning (or keep it if they never lost it!), and learn natural consequences without shaming. This method requires parents to trust the process and take the long view--definitely not always easy, at all--but absolutely worth it. I work to build connections to other Fairhaven parents, and that supportive network continues to be incredibly helpful in this regard. I cannot recommend Fairhaven more highly.
