Our group booked a two-hour tour for six people. We wound up having extra and had cash to pay him afterwards for the extras. About 15 minutes after leaving the dock, weather moved into the area and the captain made the decision to turn around and return everyone safely to shore. It was terrifying. We crashed into a dock, were drifting around corners. We were unsafe in a lightening storm on the water. We were back on land and in our cars within 40 minutes of the scheduled trip start, and we ended up not getting any of the experience we paid for. What we did get was a terrifying return to dock. Despite that, we still tipped the captain approximately $150 because we appreciated his efforts in getting everyone back safely. If you ask me, that squall was close enough to see on the radar and we never should have left the marina. We were also not given any safety instructions other than "stand at the back of the boat so I can go faster". Following the trip, I contacted the owner and requested a refund since rescheduling was not possible for our group. Half of our party lives out of state, and coordinating the original date was difficult enough. After the first bit of pushback, I specifically asked that all communication remain in writing so there would be a clear record of the discussion. What happened next is why I am leaving this review. A situation that could have been handled professionally and amicably became unnecessarily hostile. During the dispute I was called an "asshole" and a "scam artist" over the phone after previously requesting that communications remain in writing. The refund was eventually issued in full, but the refund documentation I received contained the word "Cunt" in the refund notes. Weather happens. Tours get canceled. Customers ask for refunds. None of that is unusual. What is unusual is the way a repeat customer was treated after spending money with this business for three consecutive seasons. The problem was never the storm. The problem was the response afterward. If you choose to book here, I strongly recommend considering how disagreements might be handled if something goes wrong.

Boating seemed like an obvious option, but all the other tours I found looked crowded, not very intimate, and were pricey. Lucky for me, LBI Luxury Charters had just started doing private boat tours a month before my visit. Captain Mike and his crew member James could not have been more accommodating or pleasant, ensuring my friends and I had everything we needed aboard to enjoy a beautiful sunset cruise on the bay. They provided small snacks and drinks as well as a cooler with ice for the items we brought. The boat was beautiful and very roomy for the 4 of us -- you can bring up to 6 on board -- and was not ridiculously expensive for a two hour ride, especially compared to the other tours I found. Overall, a great find. Thanks, guys, for a memorable time and save some room for us next season ;)

Al was always smiling, always helpful and always joking (and sometimes singing) to keep us entertained. Would never recommend this tour company! Wrote the Owner when we returned on Saturday!…read more I would've never posted this, but when he hung up on me, I felt I had to share this since he caters to seniors and totally felt he was dismissive, and this shouldn't happen to anyone else! Dear Gary's Tours Management, I am writing to formally express my extreme disappointment with my September 13-19 trip with Gary's Tours. This was my first trip with your company, and unfortunately, it was an experience I will never forget -- and not for the reasons I had hoped. The primary reasons I booked this trip were to visit Mackinac Island and the Motown Museum/Downtown Detroit. I was never informed before the trip that the Motown Museum was undergoing renovations. I only learned this after getting on the bus. This was extremely disappointing because visiting the Motown Museum was something I was genuinely looking forward to and was very meaningful to me. This information should have been communicated to passengers before the trip. Instead, we were taken to a psychedelic-themed attraction that, in my opinion, was a very poor substitute for the Motown Museum. When some of us suggested going to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame instead, Mary Alice told us that, for insurance reasons, the itinerary could not be changed and that Gary had already spent $17 per ticket for the psychedelic attraction. I found that response very disappointing. It seemed that the money already spent was being prioritized over what would have provided a more meaningful experience for the passengers. From the very beginning, there were problems. We were picked up at Target in Brick Township during pouring rain. When the bus arrived, the luggage compartment was leaking, and our luggage became soaking wet. While I understand that the rain itself cannot be controlled, the condition of the bus and luggage compartment procedure could have been handled differently When I finally received my luggage at the hotel, many of my clothes were still wet and had developed an unpleasant smell. The bus itself was in unacceptable condition. There were leaks in at least four areas, the seats were in poor condition and covered with lint and debris, and the overhead compartments were extremely dirty and covered with fingerprints and grime. The television on the bus did not work, and neither did the music and microphone systems properly. I have photographs documenting these conditions and will be including them with this complaint. We then began a nine-hour journey, yet our tour guide did not even have a working microphone. I cannot understand how a tour company can send 52 passengers on a nine-hour bus journey without ensuring that the basic equipment needed to communicate with passengers is working. Instead, when the tour guide needed to provide information, she had to raise her voice and essentially yell so passengers could hear her. Even then, much of the bus could not hear her, requiring her to repeat information. This was extremely frustrating and completely unnecessary had the bus been properly equipped. We broke down. Twice ... would not recommend this company.
