This is a great way to sample the different kinds of gouda, munster, and more that are produced in the country. It's also fun to compare the cheese at different stages of aging. They feature cow, goat, and sheep's milk cheeses, and some come in interesting flavors like pumpkin, truffle, or coconut. But I'm a purist when it comes to cheese, so I stuck to the simple and plain gouda. The prices are a bit high, but the shop will pack your cheese for travel. They also offer some very snazzy looking gift sets if you want to take an edible souvenir (the best kind) to your friends back home.

The Amsterdam cheese company is one of my favorite cheese shops. The staff is super helpful and they will go out of their way without being pushy, to help you with your cheese selection. Let me just put this out there right now... You will want all of the cheese. Every sample we had was delicious. If I could have purchased the entire shop, I absolutely would have. So instead of purchasing the entire shop I definitely purchased enough to keep us all happy for a while. The garlic cheese, the spicy cheese, the aged cheese,... Honestly, the notorious Amsterdam staircases are what prevented that from taking place lol. Old Amsterdam makes some of the finest cheeses in the world today. Well enough to spend an additional 15min having our cheese swabbed in airport security. Yes, I took back an entire tote bag filled with a variety of cheeses (13 kinds) & yes, I took it as carry-on luggage. Yes, you CAN do that, though you may want to allow extra time for additional screening, as a bag full of cheese looks suspicious on the scanner. (Let them know ahead of time, so they flag it as odd contents and things go more smoothly) Tasting cheeses are readily available and you can taste literally EVERYTHING before you buy. Why then, with a bag filled with cheese do I give them 4 stars? Because it truly caters to tourists which resulted in higher pricing. Still, you buy KNOWING it can all fly back with you. For this particular shop, I highly recommend the vintage edition- the oldest cheese they sell- I bought 3 of them and already regret not getting more. While the brand is available stateside, that particular vintage is not.

They had samples of all kinds of cheese and the sales people weren't pushy at all. It was what we would expect from a European cheese boutique. We made the mistake however of assuming that these cheeses, made just 20 minutes from the Centrum according to the man at the register, would be pure and free of additives. Unfortunately after the fact I realised that the two cheeses we bought (Baby Natural 400gr €7.95 & Baby Old Willing 400gr €10.95) both contain sodium nitrate and colouring in the form of annatto, so I would not buy from them again.
