Due to the very heavy winds on December 23rd I lost power, and my very large pine tree branch, fell down on my dogwood tree. There was a big mess in my back yard. Fortunately they had fallen on the ground, causing no property damage. I called Andrew, of Trout Brook Landscaping to take down the damaged branches. I recently had a large maple fall diagonally across my yard and over my driveway causing my wife and I to have troubles coming out and into our home. This review is being written on behalf of my parents who do not have a YELP account or leave online reviews. I felt it was necessary for people to be aware of what is going on, as this event was clearly UNETHICAL. My elderly mother had called Trout Brook Landscaping to do routine trimming back of some bushes on the corner of the property. My father had surgery, was not ambulatory, etc., so my mother was put in charge of the job, which was nothing out of the ordinary. TB landscaping got back to her immediately and gave her the number of the person who would be doing the job. She called him and they set up an appointment to meet. Mind you- the job was to ONLY trim back bushes that were overgrown on the corner of the property line. When the landscaper got there, he immediately tried to expand the job. He continued trying to sell additional work around the perimeter of the house, planting of other things to improve the curb appeal, etc. My mother made it clear that the job was only to trim back the bushes- period. He left after giving her a quote of $750.00 which was one of the WORST cases of trying to scam an elderly/female that our family had ever heard of. The next day, the landscaper called her and stated that he felt bad...he was completely wrong in his estimate and that he'd now do the job for $500.00- he was going to give her a great deal! Right. NO ONE OVERSHOOTS AN ESTIMATE BY THAT MUCH BY ACCIDENT. He knew, 1. she was getting another estimate and knew the other company would fall over after hearing his ridiculous estimate, and 2. he knew no one in their right mind would pay close to a THOUSAND DOLLARS to trim back bushes. I make it a point to expose people that take advantage of the elderly/female, and here is a perfect example. They ruined a great thing because had this not gone down the way it did, they would have been hired for other jobs. read more

The tree needed to be removed because it had become a threat, it was leaning more each year towards my house. While I'm certain this business is happy to take your money when you live in the lily-white portions of town, he didn't seem terribly keen on doing anything besides insulting us once he realized we were in the part of West Hartford that isn't walkable to Blue Back Square. We reached out to some area companies for some light work, and their representative was very quick to respond. But after discussion of area needed for mowing/weeding we got to the location of the home - on a quiet street in Elmwood, off New Britain Avenue. The tone quickly shifted to his being uncertain about leaving his equipment out - in broad daylight, in a neighborhood where we have lived for over 30 years without incident, I should add - due to 'it being the kind of place where stuff tends to walk away'. I'll leave it to others seeking their service to decide whether or not that constitutes a racial overtone, but given the circumstances, we were happy to inform them that we would find another company for our needs which doesn't immediately turn up its nose when it finds out you're in the part of town that shares a border with Hartford. read more

After finding Trout Brook Landscaping on Yelp, I called the contact number and spoke with Andrew about some Fall Clean-up work I needed on my home. He got my address and told me he would call me back. Within an hour, he drove to my home, walked the property and called me back with a detailed quote. Not only was I impressed by this initial level of service, but his quote was better than any of the three other landscape companies that I contacted for the same work. When it came time to do the actual work, the level of service was even more impressive. Since the home was located out-of-state from where I currently live, he would do the work, then take detailed photos and send them to me, without my request. When it came to the final work for the season, he actually sent me photos of the property before doing the final work, to show that all of the leaves were indeed off of all the trees. And again, when the work was done, he sent another round of photos showing the completed work. In all cases, the work was done exactly as requested, with beautiful results. Ignored my specific instructions about what to cut, and ignored my request that I be present when they did the job to ensure they did what I wanted (I'm available almost every day, but had to go out of town for two days). They butchered my favorite tree that sits right smack in front of my house! Andrew responded to my complaint by saying he needed to keep his crew busy, as though it's my job to make that happen. I used Trout Brook Landscaping for a few months this summer. I went on vacation in the early days of lawnmowing season and, upon returning, I had fairy high grass and a broken lawnmower. Not very lucky! After speaking to Andrew, we agreed to a mowing schedule of every 10 days or so and negotiated a pretty immediate start date. Because of the hilly landscape of my property and the fact that he wasn't mowing any other lawns in my immediate neighborhood, he told me that he was going to be charging me a premium. Since beggars couldn't really be choosers, the grass seemed to be growing longer by the minute, I agreed to the price and a start day. The first day that my lawn was supposed to be mowed, no one arrived. I called and was told that most people like their lawn mowed on a Friday and they weren't going to be able to make it over to my neighborhood that day. Ok, fine. So, I waited until the next week and due to some slight rain, it took another 2 attempts to get my lawn mowed. Had that been the only problem, that would have been absolutely forgiveable, however, issues (and excuses) seemed to continue to pile up. Upon receiving my first bill, I saw that my lawn was mowed for the 2nd time only 4 days after the first time. There was absolutely no reason to do this and was against our original agreement of mowing every 10 days. When I called to question this, I was told that the team sometimes does this to get people on a "schedule". I shouldn't have to worry about or pay for the landscaper getting me on an easier schedule for them. Again, this also would have been fine (accidents do happen), had it been an isolated incident, but every bill I received seemed to have some sort of error where I was being overcharged or my lawn was being mowed more often than I had requested. On a positive note, once my bill was adjusted each billing cycle, the actual process to pay was convenient and online, but I needed more than just this to stick with this guy. When I tried to contact Andrew, I would leave a message, but never receive calls back, so I felt like I was constantly trying to track him down. I'm sorry, but hiring a lawn service should not be this hard and I shouldn't have to feel like I am being dealt with dishonestly. Most of the time, I felt like I was dealing with a high school kid who was doing this work on the side after school. I think that Andrew has some work to do on his professionalism and customer service skills before I would ever recommend him to anyone. I was able to find a different local company to take over my lawn at 1/2 the price and it looks just as nice, with no issues, so I know better options exist in West Hartford. read more

Very poor customer service from owner, Andrew. After poor communication over lack of communication regarding timing of a tree job, Andrew and I spoke and he assured me he understood my need for communication so second chance was given for leaf clean up. We were promised that work would be done by end of week and we would receive a call with exact date. By friday, no call or work sone, called office and was told that they would arrive next day, Saturday, at 8:00am. Unnecessarily, I woke early on Saturdays to be ready and again they were a no show. I called later in day and was given a story about the change that made no sense but was assured we were first on list for Monday. No apology or any sign of care about inconvenience of my getting up early. Again I was up early, took dog to daycare so he would not bark all day, and again they did not show up. Andrew refused to get on the phone when I called. i spoke to a nice woman who said they would come tomorrow. Andrew finally called back and was yelling at me that i should have taken responsibility and called them to verify that they were coming....REALLY??? I should call them after they assured and promised? he then stated that we obviously can not work together.... He, the owner of the business, was unconcerned, rude, and inappropriate. Would not recommend this company. After meeting to discuss what work was needed, the big ticket items was taken care of first! Many trees taken down, actually more than originally propose. When it came to tackling the rest of the project, did not hear from Andrew for weeks. Received a call that he was coming by, then no contact again. Emailed him to say this was no acceptable to us as we were needing to get the landscaping done, he did not have the courtesy to even respond!!! Andrew talks about his qualifications as an arborist, his knowledge of local plants, etc. but he doesn't seem to know how to run a business or to live up to his promises. Really poor customer service. I would think that if your business was overextended and had issues with getting work done in reasonable time frame, you would be straight forward about this with customers. Had a very disheartening experience with Andrew and was completely taken back by his lack of professionalism. We requested a quote for landscaping and he sent out his arborist to meet with us. The arborist was very knowledgable and insightful. We were very upfront with what our budget was, however, there must have been internal miscommunication with the arborist and Andrew. When discussing the estimate with Andrew on the phone he made it very clear that he would not even consider our project because it was not "worth his time." After reading such good reviews on Yelp, I decided to call this business for an estimate. The owner picked up and I asked if he had any availability to meet with me...he proceeded to cut me off to tell me he was going to Boston to receive an "Arborist award" that evening. Now I am all for personal development and achievements but to openly cut a potential client off mid sentence is never appropriate. I should have took that as an immediate indication of the owner's immaturity and lack of experience. As I continued on trying to explain my situation, he again cut me off to tell me what would be "most affective for himself as a businessman". Frankly I rushed to get off the phone after that. About two hours later, I received another phone call from the owner apologizing for being "rushed" on the initial call because he was driving. I again stressed that I would send the scope of work via email and I would call him back to set up a meeting time. The following morning the owner just showed up at my property (luckily I wasn't home alone) with a random man who was never introduced to me. We had never established a meeting time!!!! I indulged him by giving him the scope of work and walking the property with him but was completely turned off because HE WAS EATING THE ENTIRE TIME!!! I couldn't even believe my eyes. He is clearly pursuing my time and my money yet he's eating and LICKING HIS FINGERS as we are speaking!!! He even asked me to review him on Yelp! I mean this is why you cannot take these companies seriously!!!! How unprofessional!!!! I have had one man companies that I've called off Craigslist be more professional than this young man. I would strongly urge you to take your business elsewhere. Trout Brook Landscaping, owner Andrew Bachman, is a welcome relief and reassurance that you can find a company/small business on the Internet and have their services exceed your expectations ten-fold. Background: our closing date got pushed out and suddenly we had to deal with property maintenance for another two months. We had moved, lawn mower had been sold. Now we have to deal with calf high grass. We went on the Internet, and wanting to stay local and hire a small business, we found Trout Brook Landscaping and of course, having had some issues hiring businesses this way, we read all of the reviews. We called Andrew and explained our situation. Andrew actually did a drive by of the property, quoted us a price (he even apologized for the price but we said Not A Problem cheerfully, because it was going to be a 'messy job' being calf-high grass and overgrowth!) and then referred us to one of his subcontractors, Raymond Klinger. We talked to Ray, he came on the designated day and time (he was prompt), walked through the property and then began what was a masterful restoration of our lawn. He had to first weed whack the entire property, then he mowed it, then he edged it and then finished by using a leaf blower to remove the clippings. Our lawn went from looking like an overgrown ruin to the most perfectly manicured property on the street. We were dumbfounded and amazed at the same time that our lawn could be recovered to a showplace! Ray was professional, calming (we were a bit panicked), organized, efficient and deliberate in his steps to complete this job. Starting with the professionalism of Andrew Bachman of Trout Brook Landscaping, ending with a wowing recovery of our lawn thanks to Ray Klinger, our faith in using the Internet to hire the best of the best has been restored. We've hired Ray to continue mowing our lawn until the new closing date. If I was ever the most sincere about recommending people and businesses, it is this one.
