If you are like me and know very little about the Amish in our country, this is the way to learn so much about the history and current lifestyle. Rich, the owner/operator was excellent in his narration of the Amish. His parents were Amish but left the community before he was born. He went over some "rules" about how to show respect to the Amish such as don't take any pictures without asking first. During our three-hour tour, we were able to see the beautiful countryside, farms, and homes, staying off the main roads is the only way to see just how awesome this area is! We made three stops in the Amish-owned and operated stores and workshops. The Amish that we met were very friendly and enjoyed showing us their great businesses. I learned so much about the Amish today and have more respect for their culture. Please consider taking one of the number of tours that Rich offers. I wish I had found his website earlier as I would have loved having dinner with the Amish and learning more about them! Please do keep in mind that the Amish may or may not take credit cards! There were five of us on our 2-hour tour with Richard Troyer. What a treat he is! So knowledgeable and friendly, and he readily answered our many questions. He gave us a choice of what we wanted to see, and he also gave us many ideas for places to visit and to dine afterwards. Our 6-year-old granddaughter was with us, which is why we chose a shorter tour, but he was so nice and accommodating with her that I'm sure she would have liked to spend another hour seeing the sights. I have been to the area countless times in the past decades, but I learned so much more about the culture than I had ever known before. Great tour! The owner has many Amish roots in his Family and knows his stuff. Very informative. Found the 2 hour tour was sufficient. Beautiful countryside. Only complaint is the directions...no physical building, he just parks the van in the Amish museum parking lot and Google Maps will take you 3 miles away. I choose to go on the Down the Road 3-hour tour. It was an amazing and informative experience and I learned so much. The amazing tour guide, Rich, took us through the backroads of Amish country. No two tours are alike! You learn about the history of Amish people and where they originated. You get to see how they live as well as make some stops to a few of the local thriving businesses. We met a few family members of those businesses while stopping by their shops. The entire tour is narrated. It is a unique experience and keeps you engaged the entire time. Trust me, I know. Myself and the small group I was in asked plenty of questions. The more Rich spoke, the more we became intrigued and wanted to know LOL! Amish country is certainly one for the books. My 8 and 6 year old daughters and I did a two hour customized tour followed by dinner with, and prepared / served by, an Amish family. We learned so much and had a tremendous time. During the tour we stopped an old order Amish home and bought a basket in their shed-shop. The girls kept peeking out at two little Amish boys who spied us. We also learned about a daudy haus, bench wagons, Amish cemeteries, and how to spot an Amish home - among other things. Of course the meal with the Amish family was fantastic, but the company and discussion were even better. After the meal my girls played with 2 of the 5 children and got to see their toys and rooms. It was fascinating and familiar all at the same time. We also agreed that many aspects of Amish life were quite attractive and appreciated the strong sense of community and emphasis on keeping things focused and simple.
