Going to a True Stories event is somewhere in between going to a stand-up comedy show, a play, and an author talk. Each True Stories evening has a broad theme, like the one I saw which was 'Redemption', and handful of famous personalities - actors, writers, musicians, politicians - who stand up on stage, with no notes or script, and tell a personal story relating to the theme.
Being in the audience at a True Story event, you get a real rush from that feeling that it's all raw and unrehearsed, plus the thrill of hearing personal anecdotes in an intimate setting. It's an exciting (and cheap) night out . I recommend you go with an open mind and be prepared to hear all sorts of funny, sad, and intriguing stories.
True Stories Told Live are a series of events organised by the New Zealand Book Council. They do them in Wellington too, so best to check your local event listings or the Book Council website for upcoming performances. read more
