An amazing and unforgettable experience - perhaps the crowning jewel of our entire trip. Olivia was a knowledgeable and personable guide. I loved hearing about how the cave was discovered by little kids - brothers - who spent their childhoods playing in it, and how they later grew up to save enough money to buy it outright and keep it in the family thereafter (and it's still privately owned by the family to this day!) At the start, we were a bit concerned about the amount of walking - and in particular, the steps. Our youngest is at the age where he wants to be independent, but he needs extra time to manage stairs (and some of those passages were narrow and steep enough to where we didn't feel comfortable carrying him) but we needn't have worried. Our large group had some adults who needed extra time with stairs, as well as people who took full advantage of our pace to snap more photos (and I've been on another cave tour where we were rushed through and unable to take many photos at all); nobody seemed to mind. I was also worried about not bringing a sweater, as the cave is 58 degrees year round, but it's a little bit of a workout which keeps you warm. If you have any health issues like a heart condition or anything affecting the function of your lungs it might be too intense (I'm just fat, and it was mildly strenuous: just when your heart starts to pound and you're breath is coming in faster you've reached your next destination and you return to resting state - this happens a couple times.) The cave is like being on another planet. We snapped some amazing photos. When it was time to return to the world above, my kids were sad that it was over. read more

If you're heading to Townsend. Tuckaleechee Caverns is a must-do. This place is absolutely worth the visit. Pricing is reasonable, and the experience is unforgettable. We had Kash as our tour guide and he was fantastic, energetic, kind, and amazing with kids. He kept everyone engaged, answered every question, and clearly knows the caverns inside and out. Even in a large group, you could still hear him clearly throughout the walk. The tour runs about 1.5 hours and covers over a mile underground. Be ready for stairs, lots of them (around 87 steep steps on the way out), and this is not wheelchair or stroller accessible. The cave floor is wet, so good shoes are a must. You'll also duck in a few spots, but not constantly. The views are unreal: a waterfall, a stream, stalactites, stalagmites, and massive natural columns you get to see up close while learning the history behind them. It stays cool inside, but you'll warm up from all the walking. It's well organized even when multiple groups are passing each other, and everything flows smoothly. The gift shop is also a win: well stocked, fair prices, and they accept cards. Bottom line: if you love nature, caves, geology, or just want a unique family experience, this is 100% worth your time. read more

We really enjoyed this visit. It's a family owned establishment with a pretty cool origin story. And it's huge - so much larger than we imagined. Our young guide was great and shared so much information about the caverns. The tour is about an hour and a half and you'll def gets some steps in, along with some fairly steep staircases. But the views and the experience of being so far underground with all the natural beauty is absolutely worth it. Bring a sweater. Oh, and grab some fudge on your way in or out. Caves! I'm not a big cave guy. The thought of the world crumbling in on you until life is squeezed out of you doesn't appeal. But here we are. We had done most of our hiking the week before in Virginia and North Carolina. We had hiking planned for Tennessee, but the weather was unpredictable, and I found this place. I had no idea there was a cave system under the Smoky Mountains. So the appeal of being under the mountains is there. They also have some kind of seismic machine at the place. They can tell you if an earthquake(Sorry. Music break - "It hits me like an earthquake, uh huh" - Jisoo)... or if a bomb happens on the other side of the world within minutes. Appeal leveled up! You go here for a tour. The tour probably had 30-40ish people on it, and there were other tour groups that you pass as the tour continued. It's crazy that this cave system isn't a national park(much like Mammoth Cave for all you KY fans out there). During the tour, I learned that this cave system goes deeper than Mammoth! Your tour experience might vary. The lady leading our tour was chipper, knowledgeable, and full of energy about caves. Some of the other guides we walked by didn't seem to be in cave heaven like she was. The place is also family-owned, which is probably a good thing compared to my national park comment earlier. The tour is cool and gives you things to see. You even get to see certain rocks that used to be in other areas but fell to other areas over time, so... squishy squishy the life out of you vibe. Check it out. It's such a different thing from hiking or drinking in Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge that it's worth visiting at least once. read more

Definitely check this place out if you're in the area! So neat to feel so small and be amongst such ancient giant structures! Be aware there are some steep steps involved though--up and down. Some good bending over as well. A 1.25 mile path, 58° year round, 45 minutes to an hour long tour, the most sensitive seismic station in the world, a 210' waterfall.. This place is seriously so neat. The "Big Room" total darkness experience was a hit with our kids! Perfect place for a homeschool field trip. I also love that it's still family owned. All around such a cool place! read more

This place is hands down a must visit! We decided to go about an hour and 15 minutes before they closed. Our guide told us that usually those trips can be full, but it was just us so we lucked out! It is such an unreal experience to hear the history and story the caverns. We had our baby and three children with us. The kids did great it was slippery so make sure you are wearing tennis shoes and bring a camera. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Happy to hear this place is family run and not owned by a large company or the state. It was slightly chilly down there, but once you start walking, it feels perfect. Highly recommend! read more

This is a pretty good cavern system to visit. The underground waterfall and big room were the highlights for my family. The tour guides could use a little refining and the facilities aren't the cleanest. I also found myself wishing they would sell tour times instead of the 'just show up and buy your tickets and we will work you in' style. They warned us about the steps. That was a good thing. The guide was nice and friendly however I did hear him say we probably wouldn't be able to hear what he said cause there's too many on the tour and we were so far back at first, and we did fine on the steps, but some of the younger people did not, and he walked extremely fast. I've never been on a tour that the tour guide had to go fast. It's usually casual so you can enjoy the sites of the cave. This cave had nothing really special in my perspective as I've been to other caverns and caves, and they had a lot more to offer. It was like we were rushed through and then got separated because some of the people went slow and couldn't keep up.! Not sure why it had to be fast! read more

I enjoyed my cavern tour here. It was right down the road from Davy Crockett riding stables so I decided to give it a try. The caverns has some great formations and having running water going throughout was pretty awesome. When the end of the tour climaxes at the waterfall, it is a great site to see. The staff was extremely friendly and our tour guild was knowledgeable/fun. My only complaint was the amount of people moving through the caves. There were a few times when we were not in the best of spots and had to maneuver around other large tour groups. read more

I have gone on many cave tours. Though each cave has its own unique feature and experience, I think this may be one of my favorites. The water inside the cave was beyond beautiful, the formations, and the size of the caves were impressive. The tickets were a bit pricy $25+ per person (adult + tax). The experience was great, but the price was a bit much. The guides did a great job - you get one guide per group but you come across other groups down in the cave and can hear their guides as well. You are not required to, but a tip for your guide is clearly expected and appreciated. They do a good job providing information and storytelling, so we were happy to tip, but the admission + tip, can be a pretty penny if you've brought multiple people. This is a decent experience for kids, but you will likely have to carry them as there are steps throughout and they cannot touch the surrounding formations. For the price, I probably wouldn't bring young children who wouldn't remember the experience. I did overhear our guide talking about a longer guided excursion deeper into the bowels of the cave on an experience that lasts about 8 hours and takes you into areas not open to the public - I'd contact them to learn more if this experience interests you. A great way to spend a few hours. Our guide was Joshua, he had an easy, friendly manner. Was a longer trek than expected and the tour was in a butterfly loop, so we only had a minimal double-back to the exit. The pace was brisk and I knew there wouldn't be time to do any proper photography in there so the phone had to do. Word of advice to some folks, there are quite a bit of staircases to climb and we had a few in our group that struggled. Good exercise in my opinion, but just know it's coming if you decide to go. read more

An underground adventure well worth the $20 price of admission, Tuckaleechee Caverns was a fun and educational tour under the Great Smokey Mountains in Tennessee. First of all, this business is owned by the same family who first discovered the caverns (yay for small businesses!) and you'll meet at least a few of the family members when you're on-site. Before the tour began, we were able to browse around the store, use the restrooms and purchase (or sniff the candy air for free, like I did) homemade fudge. The caverns are a little cool (which I loved since we went in the middle of the summer), so some may want to bring a light sweater or jacket. Also, there are some steep and high stairs (my husband is afraid of heights and experienced a little anxiety on one of the staircases) as well as places where you'll need to duck as you walk through. However, this guided tour is at a slow pace with frequent stops. There are also moments where you may need to stand aside to allow for other tour groups to pass by (they were super busy when went and there were about 5 other tours we encountered). The tour guides are very knowledgeable (my husband asked ours a bunch of questions...yes, he's "that person" in a tour group) and friendly and the tour lasts a little over an hour. Also, unlike most caves or caverns, flash photography IS allowed. My favorite parts of the tour were when we had the opportunity to experience total darkness (we were warned ahead of time) and when we saw part of the tallest subterranean waterfall in the Eastern U.S. We also had a chance to touch and taste the water in the cavern in one of the streams (I touched it and just tasted a few drops - it was cold and didn't have a particular taste). I definitely recommend the Tuckaleechee Caverns and would love to explore them again sometime. read more

Well I couldn't tell you what all the formations are in those pictures. But I can tell you, if you have never been to the Tuckaleechee Caverns it's at least a one time thing that you should do. It's not for the faint of heart, make sure that you're physically capable of doing stairs (lots of stairs) and leave yourself about 2 hours to do the tour. Not sure who our tour guide was, but she was taking us through the caverns like we were on a forced march. It was good, glad we didn't have anyone who really struggled in our group. read more

There are stairs you have to be able to go down and come back up but other than that at the beginning and end of your time down there it's a very easy walk next to the most beautiful underwater river! The cave was awesome! The tour guide was disappointing at best. There were about 40 people in our group and it was too many for him to handle. We were towards the back of the group from the time our tour started . If there was an introduction, we totally missed it. During the "tour" we were unable to hear most of what he said and it seemed that we were always hurrying to catch up. As we exited we heard another guide talking about safety and health warnings, which we totally missed. I recommend seeing the caverns with a smaller group and a guide that wasn't in a hurry. read more

This is an absolute must-see!! Everyone is extremely nice, and the tour guides have a good sense of humor. There are over 400+ steps to take during the whole tour (200 down and then 200 back up), which they warn you about beforehand. The steps are not all at once either. The floors are wet, but not slippery. The floors have "scored" concrete, which allows you to get the grip you need. There are some areas of climbing steps with very low ceilings. However, I think this made the tour a bit more adventurous! Definitely do this, if you're eyeing this as an option. read more

The caverns are beautiful and our guide, Brandy, was informative and funny. The amount of water and active waterfall were what distinguishes this cave from others we have seen. There could be safety improvements. The railing is missing in places and too low everywhere. The steps are also narrow. In a wet cave with low ceilings, this can feel unsafe -- especially with a toddler. I'd be surprised if the railing was compliant with OSHA and other safety regulations as it did not seem sufficient. read more

We weren't expecting too much coming into the cave, with there not being much advertising or much mentioning of it at all in our research of the area. We would say this is a must do. It's very close to the national park, making it an easy stop. We had Michael as our tour guide, he was really great. There is a lot of stairs, and I would suggest wearing tennis shoes or hiking shoes. I was wearing skater shoes and was slipping around because the ground is wet and slippery if not wearing the correct shoes. If you have breathing problems definitely bring your inhaler as I needed mine. read more
