Observed two classes, less than impressed. The positive points are that the school is affiliated…read morewith USA Taekwondo (TKD) with nationally certified instructors. USA TKD is the national governing body for Taekwondo and the U.S. National team for the Olympics. The owner seemed knowledgeable about TKD and is, as mentioned above certified with the national governing body. The studio was very clean, safe and aesthetically pleasing. The seating for parents was comfortable and adequate in numbers. Box cubicles were available for students to place their belongings keeping the dojang organized and orderly. The workout area was padded with just enough cushioning to be able to execute techniques, without causing cumulative trauma from jump kicks and spinning kicks. The monthly rates seemed very reasonable with sliding rates depending on number of classes per week attended and a discount for families. They struck a fine balance between traditional TKD teaching and modern American coaching. The negatives were that NO techniques were taught the entire first class that I observed. The designated instructor did not show up until the half way mark of the class. When the assigned instructor came in, he continued stretching for the remainder of the class. It was basically a stretching class. The second class I observed was the sparring class on Friday that was scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. I left at 6:25 p.m. when they hadn't even started sparring and spent the entire 25 minutes doing a short warm-up followed by stretching. Again, no warm up kicks or punches. After spending close to an hour during classes, I did not observe a single kick or punch. This is totally different from any of the other dojangs I have visited where punching and kicking is an integral part of the warm up. I observed the students were consistently coming in late for class and can't blame them if they are doing half hour plus static stretching sessions. I observed that the majority of students were lower ranking and few teenagers were present. This could indicate problems with retention, motivation, and programming. Recommend that if you are looking for a serious martial art program, keep on looking.
