I see and understand the mixed reviews...some context may be helpful to those reading…read more First, it's incredibly practical. There is no better way to avoid traffic and get to an event in style, on time, and affordably compared to parking next to a venue. Second, it's wildly fun and memorable. Riding over the river on the stone arch bridge with ice cream in hand on the 4th of July, enjoying the fireworks with no parking hassle--an experience that could be considered once in a lifetime. Slipping through the mob to the front of the stadium before AND after a game... Relief for your body after a long festival, concert, or convention...ask the driver to take you for some great take-out and back to the hotel, or if the night is too beautiful to stay in, tour the city until you find a bar that looks good. Giggling your heart out because the butterflies and city lights are the most joy you've experienced in ages? Priceless. Riding back and forth from free parking to the St. Paul Farmers' market with all your fresh purchases and an iced coffee on a sunny Sunday morning...I'm quite sure there is nothing better. But the drivers rent the bikes from the pedicab company, which is practical because of maintenance. This means you are really dealing with the independent drivers, who need to make enough to cover their rent for the bike and then some. This explains the other reviews. You can either pre-book or try to snag one on the street. At events like the State Fair or a sporting event, there will usually be one available out front. But pre-booking is better because you will get a "lifer" or someone who drives consistently. It also means the cab was set up especially for them, which makes a huge difference in your experience. Having taken pedicabs all accross the country and seen the overhead associated with them, $100/hour is a perfectly reasonable rate for a single cab of less than 500 lbs., and they have a radius of several miles. This means a ride of a few blocks could be 20 bucks, or perhaps 10 on a slow night. The best thing to do on the street is show the driver where you want to go and ask them how much. The seasoned ones will usually say something like "Just have a good time and pay me what it's worth when you get out" which means you are about to have a great time and will probably feel like tipping them...a few might quote you a price that is reasonable but seems high because it is more expensive than Uber, just remember Uber can't cut traffic. For pre-booking the rate still applies, but much is dependent on the location venue and timing. Communications during peak season can be tough due to supply and demand--during good weather, drivers want to be out, not making calls or setting up rides. Obviously the farther in advance you book the better, and if you are a season ticket holder, you should just get the number of one of the "lifer" drivers phone numbers to complete your experience.
