Although December is my favourite time to go, the train is wonderful throughout the whole year. It's a lovely family activity and one of those attractions that never really gets old. I have so many fond memories of riding this train. It's honestly so sad that the train was non-operational for over a year, only to return for a couple of months before being suspended again. I really hope it comes back, but after everything that has happened, I have my doubts about whether it will actually return. It would be such a shame to lose such a beloved part of Stanley Park, especially one that has brought so much joy to generations of families.

It's not any place you need to go out of your way to visit, but if you're in the area and your young kid just needs a break from all the "boring" adult stuff, this is a good place to take them so they can let off some steam. It's clean and the staff helps with you all the decorating. You're allowed to bring in outside food as well as buy food from the place. There isn't much selection for food here except for popcorn and pizza. Outside the party room, you and your kids can have access to the arcade and loonie/toonie rides. Quite a few machines were out of order, but we were able to find some to play. On the side, you can redeem your tickets for prizes. Downstairs, the kids can enter the climbing structures and ball pit.

We've been lucky as a family to visit some great aquariums all over the US and I'd say Vancouver's definitely ranks in the top as well. I do think that separates this Aquarium to others we've been to, thankfully due to the moderate climate here, they can have outdoor seal, sea lion, and sea otter enclosures, which was great for our son as he loves seals. Also thoroughly enjoyed the laid back setup on the shows, where you don't have to sign up or pay extra, they are on a recurring schedule. You can easily make the Seal, Sea Otter, and Sea Lion shows without having to rush or miss out on other parts of the Aquarium. The interior does have quite a bit to see as well. I liked the Pacific Canada and Treasures of the BC coast as of course that is highlighting the local wildlife we do not get to see. Naturally, what visit to an aquarium is complete without a stop at the gift shop? We all found some great and fun merch to bring home as we exited. All-in-all this a great aquarium in such an equally great setting and city. It might not have the biggest footprint of others you may visit in North America, but more than makes up for it in the beautiful setting, outdoor enclosures, and helpful staff.

The development of this meandering park has an interesting history and impacted local politics at the time of the big debate surrounding its implementation. In 1886 the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was given 5300 acres in Vancouver by the Provincial Government in exchange for the development of the transcontinental railway stretching to Vancouver. By 1968, Marathon Realty, the development arm of the CPR, was poised to develop this swampy 40 acre site as one of Western Canada's largest shopping centres. This plan for a $20 million centre was immediately opposed by a local group, the Arbutus-Quilchena Homeowners' Association, which was specifically formed to fight Marathon's plans. Lawyer Jack Volrich, later Vancouver's Mayor, was the leading spokesperson for the group and attributed the controversy as the impetus for his political career. The development controversy lasted for four years and resulted in a much scaled down shopping centre, mixed housing and the dedication by the developer of parkland at a cost of $100,000 which was turned over to the Park Board in 1977.
