Most honest, blunt, and effective attorney in Tuscaloosa. Mr. Sogol does not sugar coat his opinion…read moreor give false promises, but he fights for his clients more than anyone else. His subtle, respectful approach to dealing with the opposing side has proven to be a critical element to his success. If you hire Mr. Sogol, trust in him. He will get things handled with the best possible outcome. He cares deeply for the community and causes he supports, and I, personally, have entrusted and will continue to entrust him with my life and the welfare of my family. I have tried and fired other attorneys, only to lose money and end up coming back to Mr. Sogol when things were at their bleakest. He gave me back hope and turned things around in a matter of minutes. Don't waste your time with others. If he cannot help you, he has no problem telling you that and referring you to someone who can. I am not saying he is the best at everything, as I am fortunate to not have needed representation by every attorney in town, but he is the best at what he does from my experience and others I know. He will not take your money and make promises he cannot fulfill, as other local attorneys seem to make regular practice. He is to-the-point and direct, so do not expect him to coddle you or tell you everything is going to be just fine if he does not think so. However, you can expect the best in legal representation and if he says he can help, he can. Save your time and be honest with him, give him all the tools he needs to assist you with your situation, and he will.

Michael J. Upton, Attorney at Law

Michael J. Upton, Attorney at Law

Hiring Attorney Michael J. Upton has been one of the most disappointing and unprofessional…read moreexperiences I've ever had. I paid him $10,000 in late July 2025 for what he described as a "pre-warrant investigation." He was involved for only about two months -- from late July through early September 2025 -- before I terminated his services due to lack of progress and professionalism. During that entire time, there was never a warrant, no arrest, no indictment, and no formal charge ever filed. Despite that, Mr. Upton has kept every dollar of the $10,000 I paid him. From the start, I struggled to get basic communication or updates. When I reached out for information, instead of professionalism, I received demeaning and disrespectful text messages. His tone was rude, condescending, and completely unprofessional -- this occurred while he was still representing my son, simply because I was asking for updates. His messages felt bullying and dismissive, especially considering that we were a family under immense stress. When I later asked for a refund, he refused. He eventually offered a partial refund only if I agreed not to file a grievance or lawsuit -- which I refused. His justification for keeping the money was that "anything could happen even five years down the line." So apparently, he believes he can hold a client's money indefinitely, even though my son has already met with law enforcement. Out of disbelief, I contacted the Alabama State Bar and obtained his official disciplinary record. The records confirm that Mr. Upton has multiple prior reprimands -- both public and private -- for professional misconduct, including issues involving client communication, excessive fees, and mishandling of client matters. These are official Bar documents, available to anyone who requests them directly from the Alabama State Bar. My experience mirrors the same pattern seen in those reprimands: poor communication, lack of accountability, and disregard for clients. I feel deceived, bullied, and completely disappointed. If you value honesty, transparency, and professionalism, I strongly urge you to look elsewhere. I regret ever trusting him with my family's case, our money, or our peace of mind.

This is just one block from Tuscaloosa Municipal Court & 4 blocks from the Tuscaloosa County Courthouse. You should schedule your free consultation with me immediately after your first contact with law enforcement (even if they haven't arrested you yet). During this meeting, I will explain the legal process for your type of case as well as the potential results, depending on the specific facts of your case. If you are under 21, I will walk you through the 'Youthful Offender' process. You will meet with me, not a secretary or a law clerk. I will give you direct and honest advice based on my 24 years of experience as an attorney and have proven record of success with DUI, public intoxication, open container, and much more. When choosing a criminal defense lawyer, DO NOT make the mistake of letting your bondsman decide who should represent you. They usually have their own financial reasons for this 'referral'... Whether it's me or someone else, make sure you are comfortable with the attorney you hire. Make sure he or she is an experienced criminal defense lawyer, not just 'a lawyer.'
