I showed proof of employment that I am a government employee and a domestic violence survivor with two kids and it took them over a month to tell me they declined my application but the advocate made it seem as if they were going to help me. I feel so let down and stressed trying to figure out what I could do in the meantime. I literally told them that I had no food in my refrigerator and they still wouldn't help me.

To my pleasant surprise, they contacted me but didn't promise me anything. After my case was approved, instead of helping me fix my car, they gave me another car! I couldn't believe it! I've joined the OB Historical…read moreSociety, helped form OB Crime Watch and CSI OB (Clean Streets Initiative) and now I've joined the Woman's Club. You always think of little old ladies when you hear Woman's Club, at least I do, and actually, that is what this club used to be like many years ago. Now, it's filled with woman of all ages. Most just realize how cool it is to live in our little beach community and it's another way of communing with others and helping your hood out at the same time. The club has been in OB for almost 80 years, but has struggled as of late, due to lack of membership. But they have a new young VP, Mel, who has fired things up and there have been a lot of new members just in the last few weeks. The place is rented out for church groups, yoga, wedding receptions, parties...at very reasonable prices. Think about them the next time you need a place for your function. Really reasonable rental prices. What most don't know is, they have this awesome community garden that surrounds the place and anyone can pay $50 for the year and grow their own veggies in their own little plot! For $35 a yr, you can share one! With the whole farm to table movement, it's very au courant!! They meet twice a month, first and third Mondays and always have a lot of fun things planned. They just had their first annual fundraiser and lots of gifts were donated by local merchants. There was a good turn out and many won lots of cool prizes in their raffle and auction. Bigger and better next year! They will be helping out at the Halloween Carnival on Oct 26 at the Rec Center on Santa Monica Ave with cupcakes, they will be at all the cool little craft fairs on the Veterans' Plaza lawn at the end of Newport on Oct 19, and on Dec 7, 14, and the 21, we have our Thanksgiving Pot Luck on Nov 4, and we will be in the OB Christmas Parade which is always a wonderful family night. All this for only $25 a year! LIfetime memberships are $1000. Here is some cool history about the WC....The Ocean Beach Woman's Club has been a "Hub of Activity" in OB since 1934. We are one of the oldest civic groups in San Diego. I think at the time, 2003 or so, I was a sophomore and I was catching up on those community service hours (on top of it, I know). I remember I had to do a lot of trash pick up and cleaning up graffiti. Aside from that, in these last couple of years, I frequent the recreation center to play basketball (indoor). Their basket ball gym is so cool! First of all, its air conditioned. Second, they always music playing. And, finally, they have a total of 6 hoops. Two main ones and two on each side. However, sometimes they might have only a few down. It just depends. There's definitely regulars here who come in the afternoon to play five on five. Te best times to come are usually the first three hours after its opened. Its dead during the first couple of hours. Honestly, I love this place to shoot around, practice, relax and get away for a bit from everything. 2010 Sleepless in San Diego was another evening literally-"sleeping under the stars!" Not like…read more2009, when it was foggy, overcast and drizzly-this year I thought I would have no problem staying warm enough. NOT SO! I really don't know how the homeless do it every night. After my volunteer shift was over in the parking lot, the volunteers got a delicious catered dinner behind the stage. I then traipsed out to my car to retrieve my 2 sleeping bags, blanket, pillow, and 2 jackets! This year I would not be caught off guard-or so I surmised. I laid the stuff down on my chosen cot-far enough in the back to be quiet and at the end of the row so I don't feel too confined. Then went back to the stage area to listen to the music, speakers, dancers, and Pastor Miles give a little speech to the crowd. Mayor Jerry Saunders was there and he posed for pictures with a beautiful white parrot perched on his shoulder. I hope (well-maybe not-I am a Democrat) that the bird was potty-trained! I was so pleased that I ran into my friend-Mark-who used to live in my apartments but then lost his job and became homeless. A real homeless person to hang with! I am having a genuine authentic homeless experience! This is all going so swimmingly. Started to get tired and thought I'd head back to read my Bible by flashlight before I turned in. What does await me-wet blankets and pillows. Damp; sleeping bags and jackets. I didn't realize that the "dew" would dampen everything, unless those items were covered up by some cardboard or plastic! Foiled again! I guess I am just not "street savvy" enough to realize such details. Go over to the free cardboard area to try and fashion a small tent to place over me because I am now so cold but all the cardboard is already spoken for. Again-authenticity because I have seen the homeless fighting over cardboard along the San Diego River!. But like a true resilient homeless person-I had a solution. I dragged all my stuff out to my car and for about a hour blew my car heater at full blast on all the wet stuff. I was able to dry the sleeping bags off and rummaged around in my car to find another jacket and small pillow. With my in-and-out volunteer privileges, I traipsed back to the event and did my best to try and get a little shut eye. I managed a few good hours before the sun finally (mercifully) came up and I was able to get a IV line of Starbucks coffee into me just in time to look upright for the early Rock Church Sunday service. Another year-another night camped out to raise money for the homeless and San Diego Rescue Mission-a worthy non-profit doing God's work out on our San Diego city streets. See you next year-when I will bring my own portable heater, white noise machine, and more Benadryl!

This is a great event for families to participate together in giving back to the community. For the…read moreservice project portion I was assigned to the Women's and Children's Center at the San Diego Rescue Mission. There were several different tasks assigned to our group: cleaning the bathrooms, hallway, salon, playroom, and inventory of the children's store. After the service project you have the option of heading to Liberty Station to pick up your event shirt and a meal voucher. I didn't end up staying for the Liberty Station activities or the overnight stay but I was able to grab a bite and explore the thrift shop they had set up. It was great to see so many of the San Diego youth involved in a great event for the community. Would recommend the event to everyone!
