I have some fond memories of gymnastics camp, you know, from my childhood. Being bookish and unathletic, none of it really stuck. But it sure was fun while it lasted. ITYK gathers up all of those preteen physical education memories into a neat box and serves it up as a nice, family-friendly package. Getting there is a little confusing though (check my pictures for the door). They occupy a spot in the Ralph McGill building that fronts the BeltLine, in a hidden corner suite that's not really visible from the parking lot. It's an intense parking lot, too - so on your first visit you'll just have to take the location on faith after you pay for your parking. Anyway, once you're in there, the space is really something. There's colorful gym equipment everywhere and friendy staff leading your class. The website describes a number of scheduled classes, including yoga for tots and some parent-friendly things, too. There are camps and some occasional drop-off events. So, this kid's party - there were maybe 20 four year olds there, and the time was structured like a semi-open free play. There were some prescribed group activities (giant-a** parachute anyone?), and some nice freer time where the staff was circulating around to ensure safety. The kids seemed thrilled to do all of the things. Good wholesome fun, you know? I think places like this are a great resource, especially when they are sensitive to the needs of parents. Sometimes the munchkins just need to burn off some energy, you know?

A text message is received from a friend inviting us for "open play" at Intown Tumbling. I don't know what it is but anything is better than my current options. New diaper, some shoes and we are out the door. I pull in through the New Realm parking lot and find parking by driving to the end keeping New Realm on the right side of my car. Intown Tumbling is located at the end of the lot. If you walk up to the deck that is the entrance to telephone factory lofts the entrance to Intown is on your left. Now I find out what i have gotten myself and daughter into. Walking in I get excited with the assortment of things to climb, crawl, and jump on. A trampoline placed on one side of a foam wall with a pit of foam to land in looks especially fun. Unfortunately there will be no dive rolls for me, this is O time. I remind myself of my fatherly duties and take off O's shoes so she does not break the "no shoes on the blue mat" rule. Before her sock comes off she reacts to an imaginary race who's gun just went off in her head and sprints to what looks like an American Ninja course for a two year old. This level of activity is maintained for the next two hrs. Only short breaks when she come to sit by me demands water and a bite of her AB&J sandwich. $10 for 2 hrs, 3pm-5pm, of open play time here was well worth it. The bedtime after affect was priceless. She went to bed early and slept late. Hopefully this was not some training session that will create the ultra marathon runner of toddlers.

However for the foreseeable future this is a healthy place for me to be. The teachers are really good. Its also nice to see people come out of their shells. I have never seen such a safe emotional environment. Its so pleasant that its humbling. When you see all the trophies on the shelves you see it did not come from cracking a whip, but from loving guidance and direction (which may include some whip cracking but they whip you gently so you welcome it). I have never seen so many healthy ppl in my life. The men and women at Dance 411 have redefined humanity for me. While there are different personalities there is a cohesion among the ppl running the place that is really noteworthy. I wanted to check them out before bringing my kid. Now my child has started and Im addicted to going. When I saw how much my social skills improved I wanted the same for my child. Ill go as long as she is happy going. And if she stops I may still go :) Its that pleasant. Oh and they are good! Ladies dont be afraid to let your sons or significant others come here. These ppl athletes the flow is not nightclub. Its a very healthy environment for men because since all the men view you as a potential partner they treat you like you might work together someday. I hve never been in an environment that nurtured my masculinity in a healthy way. And in our society its challenging to mingle with people closely. The environment provides a safe platform to learn about human behavior and in turn have more fun being a human. You will hear popular dance classics like ciara, Classical, Jazz, and the trappiest hiphop all in one place. I have learned to hear new types of music. My emotional IQ is skyrocketing which is helping me to advance at work. I feel like I listen to music in four dimensions now. Since I started I cant stop listening to music. Its kind of a problem. Like I need to do other things. But Everything feels new. Some music that sounded like noise to me sounds amazing because they are teaching me to listen. Good place. I am learning a lot. The hostess was funny during the preshow and the shadow cast did a great job. I really liked the prop gags they did during the movie that I haven't really seen at other productions. However, there were several cast dispersed around the audience yelling lines from what seems to be a mix of the more traditional audience participation script and one of LDOD's own organically grown quips from 25 years of shows. From what I could understand of what they were saying, it was funny, but they almost never yelled together in a comprehensible way so I couldn't understand about 70% of the jokes, and the dead space of the movie that offered the best time for the audience to actually participate and add they're own jokes was saturated with the cacophony of the cast. Unfortunately, overall, it seemed like the joke barkers were more worried about being loud and playing for they're own cast and friends than they were for the audience at large and didn't take into consideration a more coordinated effort to be understood. I feel like it would be more effective if the group of encouragers were all next to each other so they could hear each other and make their words more understandable. Also, while it's not standard, it would probably go a long way, if able, to add subtitles for the movie so it's more accessible to first timers and hard of hearing.

My husband and I went to see Fela here, and even with leaving the house well in advance, it took us forever to get to the parking entrance only to be turned away because the parking for the civic center was full. Not just one lot, but all the lots. It took us almost 45 mins to find a place to park. Then to make matters worse they only had one person at each civic center entrance scanning tickets to let people in. Such a hot ass mess. I loved the fact that there were lots of performers from many different countries. Everyone in the show kept a smile and had great energy. It seemed as if the performers enjoyed what they do. I enjoyed the motorcycle performers and the very last performances the most. I highly recommend the Universoul Circus. This is a long tradition that needs to be around for years to come.
