My boyfriend's niece had a choice between visiting the Golden Gate Bridge or being on Dance Party back in December and chose to come down to KOFY Studios with me. It's Season 5 and the formula is the same: rock the 80s gear, dance to about 10 80s hits, cheer for game show challenge contestants, take lots of photos. Basic info: Tapings are held at noon, 2pm, and 4pm on Saturdays every 4 to 6 weeks during the typically five month long taping schedule. One taping is usually themed(yesterday featured the 90s. So bummed to have missed it!) Check Facebook for event details. What has changed in two years? You can no longer park in the studio lot, across the street(though some of us do) or on Chavez. Studio staff has gotten better at sending the stumbling drunks home(very important considering somebody left last taping in an ambulance.) What else to know? With four seasons under its belt, the show has its core group of regulars that stand in line for each taping. So if you really want to be part of an episode, arrive at least an hour before a taping to make sure you get a coveted taping pass. Yesterday, my friend brought along chairs to make our stay in line more comfy.

I got to attend the KQED FEST of 2026. It was my first time visiting the headquarters, and the space was just dopamine inducing: open space, walls of windows, areas that just scream community cultivation. There is so much to do at KQED Fest, and this is a FREE event! There was a variety of spaces designed especially for creative kids: painting, playing, looking under microscopes. There were also a good offering for the adults: panels, presentations by NPR, and auditions for Check Please, Bay Area! And if none of that sounds interesting than feel free to take your pick of tours, a stage with local live music (by such greats as: Tiny Desk Concert winner Ruby Ibarra or the 2024 KQED Bay Area Showcase winner Misa James), bingo, and lots of great food and drinks. Of course, I grabbed a little KQED swag as a physical souvenir of the day. I'm hoping (make that manifesting) I'll attend a live taping of any of the wonderful shows filmed right there at the headquarters. Thank you for opening up this incredible space for the public to visit. Attending KQED Fest fulfilled a dream long in the making for me.

Where to start off. I'll start how I got acquainted with KALW in the first place, followed by my…read moreexperience attending one of their events earlier this year, my experience with one of their staff post-event & lastly, my recent experience as of yesterday. So I'm part of a movement that's growing nationally & statewide. I was at a call late November last year where one of the staff was also in attendance, who also promoted more info about the Youth Empowerment Summit in January of this year. I was interested, so I signed up. Because the invite was sent mid-meeting, the person who sent the invite also said that people interested could reach out to them, so I did because I was interested in getting coverage from KALW about my work. However, the Zoom call was less than productive, as the person wasn't really providing helpful info, one of the reasons I didn't sign up for one of their radio podcasts interviews. I figure if they're going to be as rude as this person was, then why bother? Because I was still signed up for the event & I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt, I still attended the youth summit. (Youth summit: https://www.kalw.org/show/your-call/2026-01-22/power-the-future-the-kalw-youth-empowerment-summit) The summit wasn't really all that helpful, because I knew most people from there from my work (one was even presenting who I've known from other previous events) while most of the new people I tried to connect with didn't really seem to want to follow up afterwards. There were a few cool people there though, like one of the Events & Community Engagement Coordinators and one of the senior producers, both of whom I thought were DJs. I even helped the former put away folding chairs used for the event to speak with them for a bit because they wore a really cool scarf, and talked a little to the producer guy also. However, that's the extent of anything useful from the event. Furthermore, I spoke to one of the staff there, who happened to used to be a journalist with the Guardian(the UK media outlet) & claimed to be interested in my work, and even asked me to exchange contacts with them, for the purpose of connecting right away after the event. I did not mishear that- they spoke in length to me at the event. Weeks went by without an email or call after the event ended, so I tried reaching out to them. This was hard because they didn't have a direct KALW email, and neither did they have a card on them, so I had to search the web to find an email address. Despite reading my emails, they continued to blatantly ignore me(see email pics). At that time, I was considering writing a review of KALW, but advocacy work has kept me busy, one of the reasons why I wanted to speak to that journalist I mentioned above. Now, it's June, which happens to be National DJ Month. I'm a hobby DJ, & I got one of their newsletter emails, I'm assuming, because I attended the summit in January. I DJ for some of the causes I support, so I was interested & bothered to read it. It was about a DJ, so I reached out to the DJ I recall from the event who had a cool name, because we've never communicated before. I would give them one last chance to shape up & maybe they'd be helpful during National DJ Month. I was wrong. Rather than deal with me directly, or refer me to some other staff that could help, that DJ forwarded me to same person who was on the call where I first learned of KALW, which gives me little confidence anything will get done because of their surly attitude when we spoke on Zoom(by the way, they haven't attended those monthly calls since). If the decisionmakers at KALW are going to be abrasive, unhelpful & pretend they want to help, why deal with anyone at KALW? Again, not all the people at KALW are bad. There are a few good ones. Unfortunately, the not so helpful ones are the ones that pretend they'll help, or promise that they'll help but never follow up with you, while the good ones are the ones with limited power to drive things around the organization. One of the things I hate the most is hypocrisy, & for an outlet or organization to say you want to help the youth but are just making those who want to help the youth run around in circles is totally inexcusable, no matter what month of the year it is. If this is how most youth-oriented radio organizations are, I can see how we got the results we got with the 2024 election, and we're likely going to see the same thing in 2028. Anyway, perhaps executive leadership will change their mind about wasting people's time after reading this. Or not. At any rate, if this is how they choose to run KALW, best to steer clear of them. There's probably better choices out there to help the youth. Definitely deserving zero stars, but since Yelp's minimum is one, that goes to the good people at KALW. But don't be fooled at this one-star review- the four lost stars should be placed on the leadership & last I checked, 1 out 5 stars isn't something worth bragging about.

For years I heard my parents had nine 8mm video reels stored away, but without an easy way to watch…read morethem. In the past few years I took a lot of old 35mm photo negatives they had in storage and embarked on a journey of organizing and digitizing them. In the past year, at the last mention of the 8mm videos, I decided it was time to take care of them as well, but having gone through the journey (and all the related research) with still photos, I knew I would be much better off just finding a professional business (with a professional scanning machine) than trying to do it myself. I explored a number of options in southern and Northern California, but eventually decided I'd reach out to Buck and Movette on the basis of their site and output options. I was so shocked to see that other vendors were still offering to master on 480p DVDs. Perhaps a good option for an elderly customer unlikely to buy better playback devices, but a shocking betrayal of the resolution and longevity of film, since 8mm can easily take advantage of full HD at a minimum. Initially, paranoid about losing the reels in the post, or the vendor misplacing them, I had hoped to see if they'd let me come a few times and stick around for the scanning but once I realized that wasn't possible and also that Movette was the best option I'd found locally, I made an appointment to drop off the reels and waited a few weeks. Upon pickup, one of the double reel containers which Buck flagged as a risk for off gassing and eventual vinegar syndrome had been moved to recycled tins, and the 2 TB SSDs I'd left with Buck were both fully loaded. He showed me a few snippets and explained what I was getting. In short, I received each of the nine reels (combined over 3 hours of footage) as: - cropped h264 compressions - cropped ProRes 422 (18 fps converted into 24 fps via duplicated third frames) - cropped ProRes 422 (18 fps retimed to 24 fps - meaning I could retime to 18 again in a video editor without issue) - ProRes 422 overscan masters (18 fps retimed to 24 fps) - ProRes 422 overscan one light safeties, basically straight out of the scanner, no touch ups (18 fps retimed to 24 fps) I was blown away at the quality of the scans, and the thoughtfulness with which the above package of files was decided on and organized. It means I could easily share the simple h264 compressions right out of the store, and I could also load the overscans into Resolve, retime to the original 18fps to play at the natural speed, stabilize (using the extra margins as a buffer), load those ProRes files into Topaz, use AI to interpolate frames up to 30, and if desired (though I've not opted to), upscale and enhance using AI. The scans are everything I'd hoped for, captured in a fidelity and with a thoroughness that ensures the contents of the reels are perfectly preserved forever, giving me peace of mind that the precious memories weren't going to be lost to entropy. I was especially happy to see how well colors had come through, but we've just generally the sharpness/focus and cleanliness of the scans is excellent. I paid a premium to bring them to Buck and not go to cheaper options, but if you're making this decision for yourself consider this: Movette uses the Lasergraphics Scanstation 5k, a scanner into the six figures. That resolution allows for the overscan at a quality that, even if you crop down to the video frame, you're well above full HD. Other local business seem to use the RetroScan, devices that can be had for a few thousands. Yes, there are laws of diminishing returns, but there are also some incontrovertible truths. Pay a bit more and have the job done on hardware unanimously considered the best for the work, or roll the dice and hope the film isn't damaged by whatever scanner is used. My thanks to Buck and Movette for their work and for staying in business in what I know is an expensive city to run one. If my parents unearth any more reels, or if any of my friends tell me they need something scanned, I know where I'll send them.
