Passing through Berwick after spending time at the nearby bridges, I was drawn to this beautiful classic church building, the kind of late 19th century structure that still carries its proportions with quiet confidence. Even though it was locked and secured on a Sunday afternoon, I could still walk the grounds and take in the building from every angle, and the setting adds to its charm with the older residential streets and the Atchafalaya River only a few blocks away. The historical marker in front reads, "Originally the Methodist Episcopal Church. Built in 1886 by sugar cane plantation owenr Capt. John N. Pharr and wife Henrietta. They donated the church building and land to the Methodists in 1899." Today the congregation worships in a building that is both a local landmark and a rare surviving example of 1880s church construction in St. Mary Parish. The marker itself was erected in 1986 and carries no number, but it anchors the site's history in a way that complements the building's continued use. Twin City Gospel Temple was founded in 1951. The building is an historical landmark, built in 1886. I saw this historic church while passing through Berwick, its located a few short blocks from the Atchafalaya River. I wanted to check out the inside but it was locked unfortunately.
