The dog days of summer can be so delicious…read more Driving and exploring all morning and afternoon lead us to needing some food and beer to refresh and recharge our batteries. Emily wanted to check out Five Cities based on their logo containing a dog and liking most of their beer offerings. We dropped in around 1pm to a mostly empty place as there was only one other table. The bartender was beyond friendly and helped us at every step of the way. We ordered our drinks at the bar and took them to a table where we could be alone. Emily started with the Bikini Bottom and I got the Here Kitty Kitty Kitty. Emily's drink came in a pineapple glass and was very strong on the pineapple flavor. Here Kitty Kitty Kitty was just about perfect for an IPA. We ordered a second drink with our food. I stuck with the Kitty and Emily switched to the Crush Tangerine. Next door is Central Standard Craft Burgers & Beer. As we were walking in, I jokingly said it would be funny if the food we order here came from next door. Sure enough, that is exactly what happens. Emily got The Standard Club with coleslaw, and I got the Fire & Smoke burger. I'd say within 10 minutes of our bartender taking our order (which we had to do at the bar), our food was in front of us in these neat little boxes. Once you crack the sticker, heaven is waiting for you inside. My burger came with lightly battered french fries. This style is my favorite, by far. Both Emily and I were in heaven eating our delicious food. From the first bite to the last fry was some of the best food I've had in months, maybe all year. Pair it with the beer and we didn't want to leave. I'd say I would like to try out Central Standard itself and see if the experience is the same there. All in all, we had a blast at Five Cities Brewing. I got a shirt and some (free at the time) stickers in their merch corner. Emily got a koozie and some stickers herself. The shirt I got was a medium and ended up running on the smaller/athletic side. If I can lose about 15 pounds, you'll get to see the fun shirt pop up in a future review as it has a funny saying on the back.

For Adventurous Brewing Steve and I shared the Adventurous Warrior which is an IPA of the Imperial sort. Characteristics to pick up as flavor goes with this brewery are juicy, fruity and hoppy. The texture of the beer is smooth and soft. A lot of these flavors are typical with IPA'S so I wouldn't go as far to say anything was groundbreaking here but the IPA was enjoyable enough and hopefully a return trip can fall into place to try out more of their beers.

They have several side options that don't have an up charge so I went with the chips and queso. The sandwich was delish and exactly what I was looking for. The chicken was actually grilled and you could tell that they actually cook the food and use real ingredients and food. The bacon was delicious and I loved the combo. I equally loved the chips and queso. The chips are also handmade. I saw someone with nacho and these chips would be killer in them because they definitely wouldn't be getting soggy. As I said, our server did a wonderful job but my wife had to ask 3 times over the hour plus wait to get answers about what was going on. My wife and daughters have worked front of house service so we can understand issues. As for the back of the house, it says to me that she a front of house server has to help expedite orders, there is a management and training issue that has to be resolved. Our server was apologetic and sincere and that says a lot for her abilities. As for the back of house and overall management, there needs to be improvement. Would I recommend this place? Heavy metal riffage in a ice cold glass…read more To round out a day of exploring the Quad Cities, Emily and I dropped into Wake Brewing to have a beer and a few rounds of Uno and a few other card games to relax before the drive. I didn't look into the place before we stopped here so I assumed it was either surfer-themed or was attached to a coffeehouse. Little did we know it was a heavy metal/groove metal nanobrewery. I thrive on heavy metal so perfect for me, not so much for Emily. There were about 10 beers on tap to pick from so I got the Midlife Crisis (fitting as I near 40) and Emily got the Green Mind. The place was filled with what felt like the regulars so we took a spot over in a corner to drink one last beer before the road and play some card games in my 'pub kit' as seen in the cover photo above. My pub kit is a simple plastic container I got from Walmart that is full of quick and easy games to play at breweries, coffeehouses, or wherever you are. It just happens to be plastered in stickers from my travels. Anywho, back to the topic at hand. I really liked Wake Brewing. I have been into IPAs lately and tried a West Coast one for the first time. It was tasty but since I've been drinking hazy or tropical ones, it didn't quite hit like I am used to but that's on me and not the beer itself. Emily really liked her gose beer. I was eyeing the other IPAs on the menu but with a 2 hour drive back, I didn't want to delay us getting home before too late. While we sat there, some really nice groove metal was playing. It reminded me of Tool but less technical and more foot tapping. Shazam said it was King Buffalo and I'll have to check them out once life settles down a bit. If the heavy metal scene scares you, don't be intimidated. Most metal heads are big nerds and are some of the chillest people around. We didn't stick around too long but I wish we had. I loved the entire vibe of this place and would've liked to try some of their other beers. They do have some merch for sell, so you know Emily and I got all their stickers for this trip. If luck finds us back here again, I will def get a shirt. Anything to support heavy metal (and beer). As a side note, do know that trying to park here had me miss the parking lot's few entrances quite a few times. So, if it's your first time, be vigilant of the weird layout and multiple entrances. I don't drink a lot of beer as I prefer other libations, but I can usually find a beer I like here (which says something!). But they don't just have beer! Craft cocktails on tap, and now they also serve wine. Limited but good food, also. Wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches, big pretzels and salads. Weeknight specials make it easy to come after work for a quick meal, and we can bring the pup. Dog-friendly patio, fun events and happy servers make this place special.
