We were connected with Centerville Construction by one of our neighbors, who had the back yard of…read moretheir home fenced off for their dogs. They spoke very highly of Tom (Durant, the owner) and his team. When we contacted Tom to provide a quote in early 2025, he was at our home within a few days so we could "walk" the job and get an understanding of what was needed to complete the project. Tom proved to be very thorough and broke down every aspect of the work and materials and equipment required. Whether you are technical in nature - or not at all - Tom is able to explain it in a manner anyone can understand. Over the next week or so, we communicated back and forth to hammer out some of the details, make some changes to the project and finalize the deal so they could begin breaking ground. At no time during our preliminary discussions did Tom try to upsell or oversell anything - he wanted to know exactly what we wanted for our fence and gate, and that is what he built. He was always very forthcoming and straightforward with us during the project, as well as being professional, patient and gracious. One of the strengths of Centerville Construction is the knowledge of the land and topography around this area, as there is a lot of rock right at the surface, and/or up to 4 or 5 feet under the surface. This requires some specialized equipment and construction methods, especially when coupled with the high winds and extreme temperatures in the summer and winter, to ensure a well-built, long-lasting fence. We are very pleased with our fence and the overall body of work Tom and his team provided. Like covering up the Mt. Hood View with a flat patio cover. They did not provide us with any drawings that represented or matched any of our discussions. Their 3D drawings were nothing more than the Monopoly buildings with no details. Their creativity was extremely limited and it was a struggle to try to get them to listen to our needs. In the end we could not use any drawings they provided to us. They pushed us to pay for schematics before we even received a drawing we could use. When we pushed them back on this, it became clear that they wanted to farm this out to another contractor and had not intention of building it ever. We would not recommend them to others.

In October 2018, we hired Dan Van Laar of Van Laar Construction to build a small cabin for us in…read moreTrout Lake, Washington. We provided Dan with some hand-drawn sketches and a list of specifics for the project, and he developed full-size, detailed drawings and successfully managed them through the County to gain the needed permits. In the process, Dan had a number of suggestions for us, including design and construction modifications, many of which reduced costs, and all of which made the project better. Dan and crew worked through a cold and snowy winter, eventually completing the cabin in the summer of 2019. Dan coordinated with various subcontractors to remove trees from and grade the building site; excavate for the foundation; trench for underground utilities; install a septic tank and drainage system; gravel the drive and elsewhere on site; and wire, plumb, and insulate the building. Among other things, we requested a few changes to conventional construction, such as cladding the exterior with fiber-cement siding, enclosing the eaves, and installing 1/8" wire screening in the vents to increase the wildfire resistance of the cabin. Dan and crew completed all of the construction work with good attention to detail. They kept their work area clean and removed all construction debris. Since completion of the cabin, we also hired Van Laar Construction to build a large storage shed on the back of the cabin and large roof adjacent to the garage for RV storage. Each of these projects was completed well, including with extra support to hold up under the sometimes-heavy winter snows. We've received several positive comments from others impressed with the cabin and related projects. Dan has an easy-going manner and is a pleasure to work with. In addition to knowing what sizes and types of materials make for solid construction, he also has a keen eye for design that was beneficially used with all the projects. Van Laar Construction does quality work for a reasonable cost. We would not hesitate to recommend Dan and his company to others or hire them again for construction projects in the future.

Fluted casing and rosettes on the windows. Fluted casing, rosettes on the top, and plinth blocks on the bottom of all the doors. Corners were perfect. Joints were flawless. Door reveals were laser straight.
