Conscious of the fact that I needed to eat something before my stomach began to munch on my already struggling liver, I ran into the first place I saw: Yuet Wah. Now, I normally hate ordering takeout for one because you always end up with too much rice and too much of one particular meal. On occasion I have compensated for this by buying two different meals with the intention of saving some for leftovers - only to find myself 30 minutes later with peking sauce all over my face and shirt with not a morsel left. My binge eating problem aside, Yuet Wah has an excellent range of solo diner options that includes both rice and a reasonable serving of a particular meal. Being the stinge I am I was ecstatic when I discovered that I was able to receive all of this for less then $10!! As I waited for my meal I began to check the rest of restaurant out. The dining area was a little uninspired but perfectly practical. There were tables, chairs and wine buckets, but that was pretty much it. I began to wonder what this place was before it was a restaurant that seems to offer meals from every single country in Asia. It quite clearly used to be a house. What type of people used to live in a house that is now a takeaway restaurant? The point I'm getting at is that the atmosphere wasn't convincing and seemed induce bouts of nostalgia. When I returned home I quickly ate my Mongolian Lamb with rice on my bed watching some documentary hosted by Oprah about the holocaust. As you can tell it wasn't the best evening ever but it may have had very little to do with my trip to Yuet Wah. The food was decent but it isn't something you'd write home about. The location of this place is a little awkward, it is in between an Op shop and a 7-11 and there is not much going in the front display apart from a really old looking menu and the specials board. Now onto that "specials board"- this place offers a large selection of meals for only $6.50 at lunch time! And these are not small serves either, they all include a serve of rice or fried rice (I always go for the fried rice). Not only that, but they are pretty tasty too! I really like their "Beef in Black bean Sauce", it is generous with the amount of beef and vegetables the give. The service is pretty quick too so if you are just after a quick cheap meal, this place is a very sensible option. This place just goes to show, a bad restaurant layout does not always mean bad food. Next time you are looking for a place to grab lunch in the area, consider SunFay.

This yum cha (dim sum) place is a fancier version of the ones that have usually been in existence in Brisbane and is packed! I met my god-parents for lunch -- there were 6 of us -- on a Saturday around 11.30am. The place was already buzzing. The booth seating is uncomfortable and awkward. We are boxed in and squished. The steamed dim sum was sub-par.... the dumpling wrappers are mushy and thick. They fell apart the minute I picked them up with my chopsticks. The har gow and the seafood dumplings -- in fact, any of the dumplings that have the same wrapper -- all possessed this terrible wrapper. I don't recommend it. Seen juk guen (beancurd rolls) were really dense with a filling that is almost completely meat and nothing else. Flavor-wise it was fine. Chicken's feet were decent, with the claws cooked to a good consistency so it fell off the bone. The fried items were much better. The woo gok filled with taro was good -- nice and crumbly on the outside and the filling a good consistency. My favorite was the fried radish cake which were little nuggets of perfectly tender radish cake fried to a crispy perfection. The crispy pork belly (siu yuk) was awful. The fat is not rendered through well enough making the pork pieces unpleasant to eat. Service is hit and miss as well. One minute someone is efficient coming around to refill water, and then, nothing even when you ask for it. Maybe I'm comparing it to dim sum places in the US, but it's weird to me that they didn't have Chinese mustard (gai lat) when my son asked for it. The one thing I love about Chinese restaurants in Australia is that they give you soy sauce with slices of hot chile peppers in them. Wish restaurants in the US would offer this to you as a regular condiment.

I remember being satisfied with all the dishes I have tried from here, the Mongolian Beef (always a winner in my books) is particularly good.
