We went here because of the great yelp reviews. The service is good and the location is great but the food was disappointing. We ordered ramen chicken soup, Malay chicken, pad Thai chicken and udon chicken as our main dishes: all of them except the Malay were bland. We got tempura shrimp and vegetables for starters and those were good. Overall this place is just average. Unless you are craving Japanese, I would probably look elsewhere. read more

We often find ourselves in Exeter weekday lunchtimes and in need of a quick eat. Obviously there are the usual high street offerings but I like to support the independents when I can and some years ago I was pleased to find Tyepyedong on Sidwell Street. This is not a place for a long leisurely lunch as the interior is very functional with long benches and tables offering a refectory style of dining where you sit close to your fellow diners. The local university has a large population of Japanese students and it's obvious they prefer this to the pricey Wagamama's in the Princesshay. There are always a few tables of young Japanese diners and I doubt they would settle for anything that doesn't truly reflect that homelands cuisine. Tyepyedong is a Japanese canteen offering many different stir-fried noodle/rice dishes, some really healthy soups and lots of Japanese side dishes too. Vegetarians are easily catered for here and everything is, as you'd imagine, cooked to order with dishes arriving fresh and hot. Take advantage of their £5.80 lunch that comprises of a main dish and choice of drink - great value! Our youngest doesn't do pre-school on Monday so we normally have him with us and he always slurps-up a whole bowl of Chicken Yakisoba with no fuss! My palate demands something a little more flavoursome so I opt for the Spicy Garlic Chicken with fragrant sticky rice and if that's not spicy enough they always have extra chilli sauce and oils on offer. Staff are friendly, efficient and swift in their task. A quick lunch is what they do well here and I have no experience of their evening service. On their menu it reads "the place to eat without the fuss" and there's no doubt they deliver just that! read more

Tyepyedong must be one of the best places to eat in Exeter, especially if you like Japanese cuisine. That said, Tyepyedong does not serve sushi, instead it's menu consists largely of delicious noodle, rice and soup dishes. The layout of Tyepyedong is proper noodle-bar fare, with everyone scooting up together and sitting like (slightly uncomfortable) diners at a banquet. There is full waitress service and it's consistently good and efficient, the food is delivered fast and hot and everything tastes great. Aside from my slight phobia of pickled ginger, I have yet to find anything on their menu I wouldn't happily shovel down. It's also worth noting that like other Chinese and Japanese restaurants, you're not expected to tip at the end of the meal. Actually this restaurant is not a Japanese food restaurant. The noodle is tasted as same as the noodle from Chinese supermarket, not handmade by the chef. The all fried rice meals in the menu is the kind of Sichuan style. Taste good BUT be aware that the chicken meat may be raw. So I do not understand why many British people have this restaurant a high evaluation, for me, this kind Chinese restaurant only worth 2 stars. read more

I have visited tyepyedong in the afternoon for lunch only. The lunch menu has a good selection of freshly cooked meals in their semi-open plan kitchen. Similar to wagamama but better in my opinion. I have tried a nice noble stir fry with sugar snap peas beef and Ginger with beansprouts very nice indeed. Friendly service and well worth a visit. the layout is a little utilitarian, long bench seats so not my sort of place for a Cosy evening meal but perfect for lunch or larger groups. read more

Yum yum yum - love that you can step in & 10 minutes later you are tucking into a big steaming bowl of noodles or rice. Love the green tea & the miso soup you can have to drink. The food is a little too strong in flavour for my kids but the perfect place for me & my husband to have a quick meal away from the children. This is my favourite place to eat in Exeter. The food is extremely good. It is very well priced, especially from the extra lunch menu (12pm-3pm) which includes a drink for £5.10. It is your usual kind of noodle bar, with bench seats, licensed to sell alcohol. Food is served very quickly and staff are friendly. Dishes can be modified as requested. Gets busy during lunchtime. read more

A great little Japanese restaurant similar to Wagamamas. Can get busy lunchtimes when they have their lunch time menu - you can get certain dishes and a drink for just over £5. The food tastes great and the staff are always very friendly. I recommend trying the green tea ice cream for dessert- it's amazing. read more
