First off this place does get a star for having WiFi, WHY there's WiFi is anyone's guess since you are not allowed to bring cell phones into the facility. Secondly, the customer service was downright rude. Although we were greeted well by the first woman manning the inmate visitor area, once we got past the first doors it was like the monkeys are running the asylum. The entire facility looks totally worn down, there was places where CLEARLY there were leaky roofs that hadn't been fixed or maintained properly. All of the signage was cheap and obviously hadn't been maintained since I'm guessing, 2009 when "Warden David Trujillo" had been managing the facilities. I don't think he's been there for some time though because everywhere his name had been had literally been scraped off, or funnier still, covered over with gaffer's tape. Some of the signage looked like it was created by someone with only a second grade education, including a very poorly-worded "How to recognize if a prisoner is suicidal" sign that wasn't going to help anyone. Strangely enough, almost all these signs were printed on acid-free cardboard. So someone is concerned about these signs being archival. So after waiting for nearly 2 hours, we were finally allowed to see our imprisoned friend, and it looks like he won't be getting out in 2012, but he did get himself into this situation, so whatever. I guess at one point there used to be windows so that the guards could see what is going on with the prisoners in the concrete yard where I assume the prisoners are allowed to walk around, but they had been covered over with nasty brown paint... Probably to remind people that they are in Santa Fe County or something. I guess it could have been worse... It could have been turquoise... Also, apparently the prisoners there get free medical services because we were told that our friend had just seen the dentist. On a related note, we were also told that the food there is practically inedible, which strangely enough also makes a lot of sense. Foodies will also probably want to avoid going here too.

The situation was super confusing because Bradford Gregory Lawrence actually maintained contact with me afterwards, presumably in order to confuse the situation and what that incident was all about. Once I realized what had happened, I verbally reprimanded the man and he actually even threatened me. I then filed a police report. As far as I know, one cannot consent while mentally incapacitated. Ultimately though, the police believed his word over mine and labeled the report 'unfounded.' Bradford Gregory Lawrence had actually made up a story saying that I was fighting another woman at the bar for him! The cops didn't even check the cameras of the restaurant/bar where we interacted to corroborate what Bradford Gregory Lawrence told them. The cops were actually more interested in asking me what my occupation was and how my credit is! At the end, they simply took his word over mine. The police officers at the center told me no crime had occurred and that if I was bothered by what had happened I should go seek free therapy at a local sexual assault center, Solace Sexual Assault Center.

Fair warning I was here to work. But, this place is nice. I think this place was converted from…read moresome college that went under with the requisite dorm rooms attached. The lobby is a bit daunting but I guess a police station/ academy shouldn't be required to be cosy. Beyond the foyer the building is chock full of tributes to fallen officers and other ephemera of the works from our officers. I had the "pleasure" of witnessing the current batch of recruits be tested by being pepper sprayed in the face then having to wrestle a trainer. This really brought home the sacrifices they go through to get to protect and serve our community. I have no idea what a Yelp! review will do but this place is nice so I thought I'd say so.

According to www.plaza-sf.nm-unlimited.net, the statue "commemorates an important aspect of the rich history and culture of Santa Fe. The inscription originally had a reference to "Savage Indians," but some of the engraving has been chipped away, with it now reading only "Indians." The monument was erected during times of great strife between the three cultures that came together in Santa Fe, but once peace was firmly established, the wording on the monument no longer reflected the true atmosphere of life in the area." There is a monument that honors the Indians in the region in front of San Miguel Chapel. I will Yelp that particular memorial at another time. Those seeking a touch of greenery in the high desert city of Santa Fe by visiting the Plaza are sometimes not always appreciative of what this honorarium represents. www.warmonument.blogspot,com reminds us that "this post Civil War memorial is located in a plaza that dates back to 1609. The obelisk commemorates the American Indian Wars and the Civil War as of the date of its placement, 1868. This is of interest not only in what it commemorates, but what it does not. In 1868, the Indian Wars were still ongoing, and Santa Fe featured prominently in the Pueblo Revolt," something not mentioned at all here. The ugly truth about what the United States did to the Native Peoples is a dark stain on our national character. It is always nice to honor those who have died in battle for our country. However, the American Indians suffered greatly at our hands and I have to deduct 2 YELP STARS and make this Memorial just A-OK, due to the controversial nature of the "honor" here.

The rest of metro Santa Fe might be their version of suburbia, but the heart that anchors Santa Fe is right here. Yes, the shopping on the adjacent streets is a bit high end, but the classy charm of the plaza and the Tribal merchants across the street at the Inn of the Governors grounds the experience. Besides the interesting mix of people at the Plaza, I note 2 interesting experiences: 1. The Classic Car show on Friday night that circled the entire Plaza on the outside, accented by "Low Riders" occasionally circling. Our friend Laurie even found the model of car that her family drove around during her childhood. 2. The Santa Fe Plaza Obelisk, historically known as the Soldiers' Monument, was toppled by protestors in 2020 and its pieces are slated for a museum. What will become of the Monument proper is in community committee hands, which will probably go round and round without much meaningful progress short term.

This was where El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro, the royal road of the interior, ended, having begun in Mexico City. This is where the Santa Fe Trail ended its 900-mile-long journey from Independence, Missouri. There are markers in the plaza commemorating both. The best part of the plaza is the Native American street vendors that sell arts and crafts on the street. Many of them have their ID card and we loved meeting Paul and buying some of the hand painted see pots him and his wife made with hummingbirds on them. We asked him what the bird meant and he said "the beauty of life" and it made it a must buy. We saw other vendors selling jewlery, turquoise, paintings, and sandstone art but this was the tail end of our trip and we had no space anymore. This is an idea/tip but we asked around for fry bread or other Native American foods and nobody knew anywhere close by that served it. A nice Native American food truck or small stand would make a killing in this area!
