I love this library! I haven't been in the upstairs sections since Covid but I use the online…read moresystem weekly. A library card is free, and they recently eliminated all late fees and lost book fees (not sure how that's gonna work out....) If you bring a utility bill to show you have an Anchorage address you can check out up to 12 books at a time, otherwise you're limited to 3 at a time. Your library card also gives you access to a lot of ebooks and online movie rentals! The online website is super user friendly, you can reserve a book and the library will call you when it's ready. You walk in, and it's self serve pick up by last name. Super quick. The library offers a drive up return or you can go in person. Bathrooms are readily available and they have a little cafe.

I came in looking for a specific reference book and the clerk was so helpful before explaining that those materials were not at this facility, but she could order it and I could pick it up. And even though it was late, if I was on my way she would wait for me...wow...thanks that was so cool...

But going inside, it was pretty nice. It is a smaller library but it seemed like it had things to offer. There was a reserved shelf that was filled up, so it seems like many people go there. They are scattered throughout Anchorage, but there seems to be a disproportionate amount in between downtown and Westchester Lagoon. This one is near Westchester Lagoon. It's got a pretty wide selection and a pretty high refresh rate. You can find everything from novels to children's books to business books. Check it out if you're on the coastal trail or near the lagoon!

I'm still old school and love to peruse the books and prefer reading an actual book rather than on a device. Most recently I went in for a specific book, which I had checked online and it showed available. You can of course use the computers there to find your book or find it just as easily with your device. A brief lookup on my phone and I found it quickly!' Books, audio books, magazines, movies and a plethora of digital items to check out online as well. There is plenty of space, tables and even private rooms for study. The staff is polite and helpful to boot! One thing to make note of is you need to contact them first about donating items. They don't just take things on a whim, and definitely not a place to just dump your boom supply.

If you've spent any time at all in North Anchorage "tropical paradise" is certainly not the first…read moreterm that comes to mind. This is truly a hidden gem inside Russian Jack Springs Park. You enter through the solarium, a little tropical oasis with two goldfish/koi ponds, an incredible display of tropical plants and trees, and a large birdcage with a tree in it. We enjoyed simply sitting on the bench here and taking it all in. Next is the main greenhouse. There is quite a collection in there, some of the plants and trees have clearly been there a very long time, there are cacti that practically touch the ceiling, trees spreading out overhead, and all manner of other tropical plants that you won't find anywhere outside within a thousand miles of here. And there are starts and seedlings as well, indicating this will continue to be the lovely hidden oasis it is for years to come. I've been to bigger and more grandiose tropical greenhouses, but to have this at all in Alaska is quite an accomplishment. And it's free. A great way to spend an hour or so.
