That's because most of them try to be something that they're not, which is of course Starbucks. Few cafes out there establish their own identity. Few cafes in Metro Manila can stand out from the competition without emulating Starbucks. Cafe UK is a part of the few. A local favorite among the people in P. Noval, Cafe UK never fails to draw a crowd each day. A crowd mostly made up of students. The students love it here. Great ambiance, good food and coffee, nice staff and free Wi-Fi are just a few of the reasons why this place has become a regular on many people's place to chill. I'm pretty sure the guy who owns this place knows his target market. I mean, the way this place feels and how it's setup is just so right for students. It's tailor made to appeal to that kind of demographic. The branch here in P. Noval looks a bit tight and cramped. What it lacks in floor area it makes up for with the number of floors. In a way though, I actually liked the cramped space of this cafe. It forces people to be close and conversations are more likely to be intimate and engaging that way. Cafe UK is sweet. It draws students are drawn to it like flies are to honey. A warning though, be sure to bring a jacket. The place can get really cold especially at night.

We had the following items: -Lechon Kawali -Kiampong -Beef Wanton Soup -Miki Bihon Overall, I thought most of the items were fine, but not necessarily fantastic. The Kiampong and Beef Wanton Soup were probably my favorite dishes since they were unique and something you probably wouldn't find in typical Chinese menus. The Lechon Kawali was probably the most disappointing dish since I'd heard it was excellent and it tasted very basic to me. The ambiance is very casual and the service was not particularly attentive. I wasn't terribly impressed by Cafe Mezzanine, but it was fine. You should really go with a group of people so you can try many dishes to explore the various flavors...also, I'd suggest going for the Chinese-Filipino dishes since those are much more unique.

The past few years I've noticed not many freshly cooked food without flys nearby in the mendiola area. But this place has it. It's a great for students in the area it's also good on the stomach. My stomachs experience in the mendiola area is a love hate when it comes to food. When i first moved here there would be many places that would send me to the bathroom the whole day. But Barcello cafe is the place to go to prevent from getting sick I recommend the fish and chips as well as the chicken piri piri but with the sauce on the side. Portions are generous for the price. Desserts are tasty as well as their cappuccino. I say give it a try and this will most likely be your go to place if you're studying in the area.

Their menu is full of dishes that might seem out of place for something that caters to students since it might remind you of a hotel. The reason for this is that the restaurant's kitchen is usually staffed with HRM and culinary students undergoing their OJT. The cafe also has a bakery where they make their own cakes and other pastries for dessert. The Barcelo Café also has the distinction of being the only place, so far as I know, that offers a breakfast buffet. Each day brings with it different breakfast food but each day will always include rice and soup. For the price, quality of service, and the the food Barcelo Café is a good bargain and gives excellent value for the money you'll spend.

Whenever or whatever it is that brings me to the Hotel, I find myself drawn towards the Lobby Lounge. The grand chandeliers are always quite the sight to me. The Lobby Lounge is perfect for small and informal meetings, a simple workspace, or simply just for staring into space to relax and clear one's mind. On some occasions, there's actually either a live band or a piano player to fill the place with music. The service is on point, and you'll be able to enjoy a full bar list selection (in my case however, iced teas usually do). The saucer of peanuts that comes with your drink definitely isn't a bad thing either.

Had the unfortunate experience just recently…read more I was stuck in the Manila Hotel waiting for coding, after a conference. I figured no problem, since there was nothing to eat in the immediate area I figured ok, how often am I here anyways? I was ready to bite the bullet with the more expensive bill as it was a hotel, but figured at least I can look forward to a good meal. I was shown some hospitality by the manager and lead to my table, I checked the menu and true enough the price tags were a little crazy, but oh well. I was in the mood for adobo and fries, so I ordered those. It took awhile but finally it came. The fries was in a nice metal basket and was seasoned well, crunchy but fluffy on the inside. Pretty standard. The adobo came in two plates, one for the rice and the atsara (a side dish of pickled vegetables I believe) and then the pork and chicken adobo with egg and a lot of spring onion or such vegetable covering the top. The meat was admittedly soft and the sauce was nice and velvety, but that was all. The taste was very average, it was neither good nor bad, nothing noteworthy, and overall our home cooking would be better, so I was quite disappointed. The garlic rice was in between garlic rice and plain rice, it had hint of garlic but overall almost negligible. Real shame, it was on the edge of greatness, but could barely be saved by the adobo sauce. As the bill arrived, it reached quite an amount, but the server named Elle, asked if I was checked in as it would give me a much needed 20% discount, I thought for a second and realized a friend is checked in, maybe that would work? For sure Elle saw I was considering something but as she mentioned it had to be me, I did not insist and said no. After considering it again I call another waiter and inquire if it was my friend's room, he says: "Maybe sir, but how will she sign it?" after a second of thought he continues "Maybe you can just note her name and room number sir. Will ask." Ok worth asking and checking. Elle returns and says sorry sir I already had this cleared as I asked you if you were checked in. I responded, sorry I was not clear about it and figured my friend would work. She mentions but she must be here to sign, I responded that the other waiter gave me another option. Overall I reluctantly did not insist and just said, "Ok no problem, but please be clear about your questions next time, as it is such a waste." This is where she becomes very rude. She immediately says, "I did tell you." but in Filipino. I froze in place and looked at her, surprised that she had to have the last word and the tone she took was beyond disrespectful. Normally I have long patience for waiters as I realize it may have been a long day, perhaps they are tired maybe it is an off day. Who knows, I try to respect them and I am very courteous along with my generous tips, I always thought it was a give and take sort of relationship. But for Elle, she works in one of the most expensive and supposedly respected hotels in Manila, and she had this attitude. I'm sorry but I need to hold you to higher standards since you all have the audacity to charge me so much for your vaguely ok adobo (I wouldn't mind paying as much if it was actually drop dead delicious, but alas it was not). I called for her manager and complained, the same manager who sat me down unfortunately got an earful from me as her staff was quite rude, she offered a discount, but I declined saying I can afford the meal, but I expected better from you and your staff given that the Manila Hotel used to stand for quality, but now it is trash. And on top of that, don't think I did not notice the dead cockroach quietly sitting under another patron's seat my full meal. Jeez... Manila Hotel, what happened? I cringe at the idea of ever coming back and hope you all do better.

It was clean and modern, what I loved about the place is the food itself since it honestly tasted good that sometimes you don't want to finish it because it's mouth-watering. Some cons are it takes a long time to have the food done so maybe we did get bored along the way but like I said, it's worth the wait! Can't wait to go back here soon, hopefully... We tried the pizza fries and carbonara, also basic. On the plus side, diners have the choice to plop themselves in cute little "houses", tiny cubicles complete with cute mini flower boxes in the front. Word of caution tho, people over 5'7" might not be able to enjoy it much. As I said. IT TINY AF. Cafe-UK is one of those cafes that manages to establish it's own identity able to set itself apart from the generic or those that aspire to be a copycat of Starbucks. They have tea, coffee, juice, and a wide variety of American canned drinks that you won't find in your local grocery. There's a lot of food to choose from. They're a bit pricey, but the size and the taste will more than make up for it. Cafe UK has some of the best cakes I've ever had. Their cakes come in the form of a slice or a mini cake. I love the fact that they offer several kinds of cheesecake with the triple chocolate cheesecake being my favorite, I mean it's cheesecake and chocolate come on! Cafe UK is open 24 hours, and becomes a great places to study at around nine in the evening. Things are quiet at this hour up to around ten in the morning the following day, at which point it becomes a melting pot for the different students from the different schools that populate Mendiola. Wi-fi is free, which is probably another reason why so many students love to congregate at this awesome cafe. The biggest quirk that this cafe has that I don't find anywhere else are the free to use iPads. Never have I walked into a cafe that has free to use iPads, These iPads are ingeniously built into the table, I often find students spending a lot of their time drinking their orders and playing the latest games on Cafe UK's tablet. Free WiFi, excellent food and drinks, wonderful prompt service, and the tablets allows Cafe UK to deliver a great experience. Go for a visit sometime and I promise you that it'll be time and money well spent.
