Alright, so it's been a couple of years since my review and I think things have improved. Granted, I do 99% of my transactions online now so I'm rarely, if ever, in the actual bank itself, but it's still located near my workplace and every now and again I do have to stop in and I've noticed it has been better. Thank goodness for online and mobile banking. I'm able to deposit checks from my phone and transfer money to my other credit union accounts online. What a time-saver those things alone have been for me. Last year, I was looking into refinancing one or both of our auto loans (one was already financed with UFCU and the other with another local credit union). Everyone I spoke to in the lending department was very nice, but I have a minimum of 40 emails back and forth with Kristi Rice where she answered a billion questions about the auto refinance process and other non-auto-related financial questions that I had. I was never once treated like a pest with all of my questions, nor was I treated like a pocketbook. read more

I had high ideas and Hope's when I first started banking with a credit union. 3 years later and I as one person put it am soured at the idea of credit unions. They are again to quick to punish you for being poor. They love destroying your credit. Stay away away away! read more

I have tried FIVE different online banking and finance apps (Zoho Books, Zoho Expense, Quicken, Freshbooks and Azlo) and NONE of them can connect with UFCU's online banking. Their online banking app and phone app are HORRIBLE! I can't believe such a solid, quality credit union would continually allow a 3rd party vendor to create and manage an extremely sub-par online service for them. Almost every bad review is because of their apps and online banking. It's so frustrating to try and manage my credit union finances. UFCU, please dump your online banking vendor and do something! by the end of 2020 100% of my accounts will be closed and moved elsewhere simply because you're letting some other companies manage your online services. read more

Do not use their bill pay service. They will pay with checks sometimes and it will take weeks to get to the payee. They take no responsibility and are very snarky on the phone like it was somehow my fault. read more

The customer service for UFCU is pretty bad. I would not trust the information that they give you. I have had them give me the wrong routing information, incorrect instructions for opening accounts, and other processes. Today, I spent 2 hours just trying to access my own funds because their customer was sending me to branches that were closed, ATM's that were inaccessible, and ATM's that were not functioning. I did finally access my account, but it literally took over 2 hours and 7 locations. read more

Mobile banking app has been utterly broken for three months and counting. There's no reason for this at this point other than extreme technical incompetence. If they can't even fix their own app how can we expect them to code competently against account intrusion, ID theft etc? I'm a 20+ yr customer and I'm closing my account because of this. read more

I was given false information when setting up a "for benefit" account for my mother who had dementia. Now that she has passed, we have no way of utilizing her funds for her funeral. Give the correct information the FIRST time. It adds so much insult to injury to jump through MORE hoops after the fact, especially when a loved one has died. I am in awe of the misguidance and ineptitude of the representatives working here. read more

This is the absolute worst bank you can bank with. Not only have they ruined a vacation, they ruined me moving houses, and now they have ruined other services. I got a fraud alert through phone and verified these transactions were not fraud and they STILL flagged them. I followed all the procedures of going on vacation (aka telling my bank where i will be) and i was STILL flagged for fraud and got stranded on vacation with NO MONEY because they wpuld not unlock my card. When i moved i tried to buy moving boxes and it was flagged as fraud IN THE SAME ZIPCODE I FUCKING LIVED and had to move everything in black bags ruining several items. Now I purchased services through paypal and told them it was not fraud and they STILL flagged it and removed those services. DO NOT BANK WITH UFCU, they have caused me so many issues since i started banking with them 3 years ago. This company is a shit hole and the fraud department are absolute fucking idiots with no brain cells. read more

I've done business with UFCU for my personal car loans, my mortgage, as well as dozens of transactions through my business. They are so easy to work with and have great rates. I've been in Austin since the early 80's and I won't go anywhere else. I've tried other banks but every time I did I regretted it because no other bank treats its customers as well as UFCU. read more

Amateurs. UFCU is the worst bank I've ever dealt with, granted they did open an account for me as a new freshmen with 0 credit - I am thankful for that. However, over the years, they've done things to my account to actually hurt my credit more. Like close it without telling me why, and then when I ask them what happened, they couldn't 'find the paperwork or reason why'...wth? Strike two: deailng with them while I was abroad in Spain. I had my ufcu debit card in one of my old wallets that was pickpocketed. Of course, the pickpocketer tried to max out that debit card which, I hadn't used in years. I get notifications from ufcu which I haven't used in years and contacting them and dealing with the entire ordeal internationally was horrendous. Thank god I had a back up BOA account which was a million times easier to deal with internationally. Anyway, after emailing them several times, sending them messages through the online ufcu messaging system, all I got was ignored. I double cancelled the already cancelled debit card but somehow the thief was STILL able to withdraw money past the day I called them for weeks and weeks. This went on for months to the point where I had a $500 balance in overdraft fees, even though I cancelled and let them know of the situation from the start. As soon as I got back to the states, I demanded they close my account and resolve the matter. The $500 got credited, which should have never happened anyway, but they STILL haven't closed my account. This happened in June 2010. Today it is October 2011. I don't know what the HELL is wrong with this bank. read more

Don't expect your money to be very secure here! I have been in several times to make large withdrawals (over $1000) and the tellers NEVER check my ID. Not once. And when confronted about the egregious lack of security, they always agree that they should verify who I am. By that precedent, if I lost my checkbook or account summary, anyone could walk into this branch and withdraw a large sum of my money without needing identification. I'm closing my accounts as soon as I find another bank or credit union. read more

Masters of Miscommunication!!!!! I have been a UFCU customer since a couple of years now, and was an international student at UT Austin. As a bank for its normal banking processes albeit being a bit old school I had no problem. Especially in the beginning when I opened my account. But I would not recommend it to anyone for an Auto Loan unless you have an absolutely amazing credit score or just talk to multiple people about the same thing to cross verify their statements. Internal communication isn't their best suit. When I applied for my car loan, I had some unpaid dues to a retail credit card because of some miscommunication. I had suddenly lost 200 credit points without the retailer telling me I owed money for a long time. This happened right around the time I needed an Auto Loan as I was graduating and moving out of Austin (This was in June). While applying for the loan, the bank assured me that as a courtesy, UFCU does a soft check every three months to reduce the interest rate and I would not have to worry and I should notify them immediately after the credit bureau correct my credit score after I had made a complaint to the retailer. I did all that..my credit score spiked in a month and was back to normal. However I was communicating with my bank EVERY MONTH to see if they had done a courtesy check. My loan officer assured me they hadn't done it yet, and that it was rare and I should keep checking. (I was the stupid person NOT applying for a hard pull in order to keep my credit score safe , losing 10 points would have been worth it than losing money on interest). After SIX MONTHS from the loan application , when I called again, my loan officers colleague says, they have stopped doing courtesy checks since MAY!!!!!! And my loan officer must not have known about it!! And because I tried to avoid a hard pull, I was misled and I paid more than half of my high interest already!!!! Communication is very bad and please don't trust their "Courtesy " facilities. Go the highway and refinance . I feel like a fool for trusting them.; Oh yeah and also, the day I had selected a car and wanted my loan money, the loan department had a sudden meeting , NO ONE WAS INFORMED ABOUT IT and the entire department was shut down for an entire working day!!!! Thankfully I did not lose my car to another customer but that certainly did not make things "easy" as marketed. read more

As a personal customer I usually have good interactions with staff at UFCU. As a staff member making a business transaction I have been treated rudely in two interactions with different UFCU staff members. It seems they don't like UT affiliated customers. read more

Just when I thought UFCU could not get worse after having to put up about $1.7 million in property security to get a $35,000 refinance loan, and slaving over 3-4 months in the process, I thought I had gone through the worst. Well I just got locked out of my account for almost 3 weeks with no recourse since the system would not reset my password even with 2 hours of technical support from UFCU staff. No way I will touch their new mobile service as I have read terrible reviews, and it's supposedly worse than the old system which often did not record deposits made, and created chaos for me. Bottom line-the UFCU board needs to take a stand, they need to hire a new president, and entirely different executive staff. The people running UFCU now, in my opinion could not make it operating a hamburger stand! Many customers in the past have recommended that UFCU could hire excellent website and mobile designers from Austin Community College, and one client recommended his high school students. How incompetent do you have to be to get dumped at UFCU?. I guess we'll find out when all of us suffering 40 minute waits in drive-throughs, being locked out of our accounts, and being abused in loan processes because of our ethnicity, finally walk away from this toxic relationship. read more

I had fraud on my card and the bank told me they would expedite my new card since I was traveling and not in the state. So I had them send it to my hotel. The notes on my account state it was supposed to be expedited and it's been 8 business days- still no card. I am now on my 3rd day living in my car, with 4 kids and a dog, because I don't have access to my money and NO CARD! They can't explain why the notes say it should have been expedited and it's obvious it wasn't. There solution today was to send me another card and promised to expedite it. I now have $0 for gas, food, or shelter. I am in Colorado to take a new job and now flat out homeless because of their mishap. I am so livid- how the hell can Amazon deliver something A DAY later when ordered, and a bank can't. This bank is useless if you travel and have fraud on your card. Especially during Covid when your waiting for you renewal ID appt to come and your current ID is expired. You can NOT walk in to a shared bank and get access to your money, because your ID is expired (with proof of DMV appt 2 weeks from now- still not allowed to get access to money). Do NOT bank here! ufcu (lower case on purpose) used to be a great place to bank ... I've been a customer for nearly 20 years. A while back they hired a new president or whatever and he has run this institution into the ground. DO NOT bank here! In the past, I could make a phone call and 15 minutes later have a car or motorcycle loan ... now they won't even talk to me about a loan (it's NOT a credit or debt to income issue) ... or, it'll take them a week to get back to you, because "all loans have to go through committee". DO NOT bank here! One of their favorite tricks is to hold your money hostage. Do you think you're going on a trip ... NO YOU'RE NOT! ... as soon as you leave your county, they lock your cards ... so forget about buying gas, rooms, eating etc. When asked about this, I was told I have to inform them weeks in advance of travel so they can consider how much they would be willing to let me have on a daily basis ... basically, they want you to ask permission to use YOUR money. They do all of this under the guise of security. Took a trip a couple years ago and it was a daily battle to get access to MY money ... in the end they would only give me a daily allowance which completely destroyed our plans. Do NOT bank here! ufcu needs to turn the clock back about ten years and get back to basics. I didn't even address their dismal customer service, their ridiculous locations that are nothing more than indoor ATMs where you can't do anything in person or with a human representative. You MUST go to the Steck location to get anything done ... and then get ready to wait and wait and wait. There are MANY more things I could criticize. We're currently looking for a new place to take our business that actually values their customers. ufcu SUCKS! read more

This credit union has serious problems with their software, assigning one account number and expecting users to add a suffix to their Bill Pay information. Very confusing. I got a late payment notice because of this and I never have a late payment. They accept bill pay with people rather than computers. Very outdated methods. When I originally applied for a loan, the approval was quite long. My credit rating was great. Why so long? I am not impressed. They made me spend better than an hour to get my issue resolved all because someone at a high IT level made a very bad decision. Why not different numbers for checking, savings, etc. Numbers are cheap, interpretation is expensive. Need some new IT people over there. Step and work like the rest of the world. Way behind the times. I am leaving this credit union as soon as practical. read more

I have used UFCU for 8 years. I financed a vehicle with them. I have a Checking and savings account. Two direct deposits one from work and one from the VA for my disability. I lost my job a 3yrs ago and started falling behind on my bills but always made sure I paid their overdraft fees and late credit cards fees. I paid them a ridiculous amounts of fees and interest on my credit card. They took away my line of credit and I have tried to increase my credit card amount to keep my percentage of the total usage low so that my credit can start rebuilding again. It is the second time over two years that I try to increase the amount and they did not even give me options to increase the amount. No option to pay a higher interest to help out. They are only looking to help their own interest. I am very unsatisfied and I feel trapped because I would take another hit on my credit if I close my accounts with them. No options at all? Really? I am planning to use my VA benefits to buy a house and car and was going to use them but I am seriously concerned if they even care about their members at all. It must be the current management or something. I am a sales consultant and top performer selling cars. I've NEVER been happy since dealing with this bank. I've been a customer since 2007 and I'm so happy to finally be transitioning back to a different bank. The atm locations are far in between my personal servicing needs and some of them don't even accept cash to be inserted. That's ridiculous! Not to mention the atm feels unsafe. (For the 71/ Ben White-particular location.) There is no reason why they can't have a more secure option. No matter what time of day I go. I'm always seeing random people walking around the area. As a young female. I prefer to not have to watch my back while being in the back of a dimly lit area depositing my cash or withdrawing it. When depositing cash. It always gives me a hard time. I have had issues with online banking, EVERYTHING, You name it. When I complain to the customer service. No one ever gets back to me. Back to USAA I go. Who cares if they don't have any locations. I've never had to deal with this mess of a bank and their continuous issues. It's obvious they don't care about their long time customers. So I will be happy to take my banking needs elsewhere! read more

It is VERY DIFFICULT to get them by phone. The VRU system is a nightmare.

On December 25, 2016 I was in a serious accident while traveling to work. The accident resulted in my vehicle being completely totaled. The vehicle was financed through University Federal Credit Union and was covered under insurance and GAP insurance. At that time I was told that due to the vehicle being totaled and no chance of repairing it, the account was now a "dead account" and the insurance and GAP insurance would close the account completely. The insurance covered most of the remaining balance of the vehicle, close to $18,000. The remainder of the balance was to be covered by the GAP insurance, which was through their company (University Federal Credit Union). For the next 6 months, University Federal Credit Union refused to pay the remaining balance. They gave me the run around, stating they paid the remainder, but didn't. Or that the money couldn't be used until I jumped through several hoops. Or that the check was sent to the dealer, so we had to call them to sort it out. At the end of the day, University Federal Credit Union lied repeatedly and never paid anyone. Every phone call we made to them they would change their story and the remaining balance was never paid by the GAP insurance through their company. During the 6 months University Federal Credit Union took to pay the remaining balance, they were adding late fees and interest on the account. We would be receive invoices and letters pertaining to the late fees and interest on the account, and every time we called, they would state that the fees and interest would continue until the remaining balance was paid, which was being postponed for no apparent reason by the companies GAP insurance. We called for 6 months to get this issue resolved, and towards the end of the 6th month, we called to try and put the account to rest and receive the GAP insurance to finally pay the remaining amount on the account. The woman we talked to was extremely rude, refusing to help or communicate with us regarding the account, and at the end of the phone call she told us to never contact their company again or they would pursue a lawsuit against us for harassment. At that point, we stopped contacting them regarding the account, due to the threats they gave us. A few months later the GAP insurance paid $4,200 towards the remaining balance, which covered everything but the late fees and interested that their company had been tacking on for the last 6 months. For the next 3 years they would charge off small amounts, but would leave just enough to add interested and late fees; and for the last 3 years they have been dinging my credit and my mother's credit. They told us that the account was closed and the remaining amount had been charged off, essentially, they told us the account was dead and no longer open. Now they are sending us to a collection agency regarding the remaining balance, which was the result of late fees and interest, due to their continual months of not providing the GAP insurance payment. At the time of the accident, I was a single woman who was almost 7 months pregnant. My only transportation was my vehicle, which was now totaled. I received serious injuries to myself and my unborn child at the time of the injury. I was left with 4 herniated discs in my lower back, and for several week I suffered from whiplash and a concussion. The injuries made it difficult to carry my child to term, while still work to provide for myself. My child suffered from serious bruising and a small tear in the sac which was leaking fluid, this resulted in me visiting my doctor twice a week for monitoring on myself and child for the remainder of my pregnancy. My medical bills sky rocketed and my stress level increased. I was forced to find a new vehicle to transport myself to work and doctor's appointments, and all the while I was getting the run around from a company I trusted, a company that refused to pay GAP insurance and continually added late fees and interest to my account for over 6 months after my accident. I would not recommend this company to anyone, and I will never go through them again after what they have put me through. read more

I wish that I could give no stars to UFCU instead of one. I have been a "member" of this credit union for a year and a half, and I am extremely disappointed by and frustrated with the experience. I signed up for a savings account at this branch. At the time, it seemed like it would be so convenient because it's not too far from my house. However, getting to the Drag is often anything but convenient. But this wouldn't be such a problem if UFCU had a reasonable policy regarding ATM banking. It does not, and if you prefer to be able to deposit checks when you have free time, rather than having to drop everything to make sure you deposit your check with an actual teller, I urge you to choose a different bank or credit union. The trouble started when I signed up for a checking account at Bank of America a few months ago. I had heard that credit unions were preferable to banks, but having a regular bank account has awakened my attention to serious deficiencies in my UFCU savings account. I always deposit my paychecks in my UFCU savings account. Until last week, I always deposited them during business hours. Last week, I was running behind, and I deposited my paycheck at around 3 pm at the Ben White location's ATM (which at least is drive-thru). I knew the check wasn't going to be available immediately, because the bank had closed. However, I assumed that it would clear some time during Monday's business hours. I've deposited checks into my BOA account and they've always been available no later than the start of the next business day. They're often immediately available. However, assuming that I would receive a comparable level of service from UFCU was a HUGE MISTAKE on my part. I took this for granted so much that I actually went out of town, thinking that I would be able to run by an ATM if I wound up needing extra cash on Monday. Instead, as I'm driving back to Austin Monday night, I decide to check my account before going to an ATM to get a little extra cash. Not only has the check not cleared, but it says there's a hold on it until Thursday. What's especially surprising to me about this is that the check is also from a UFCU account. I called UFCU's 24 hour customer service. The rep explains that the reason the check hasn't cleared is that it hasn't been verified yet, because, according to her, it's still sitting in that ATM. Why? I deposited this check in the ATM that is physically attached to the Ben White building. It's not possible for them to verify the checks deposited in the ATM for almost a week after they're deposited? What are they doing all day? I also was frustrated that this was explained to me as though it should be common sense. OF COURSE UFCU can't be bothered to remove sort through the money deposited in its ATMs at anything faster than a leisurely pace. Even worse, the person I spoke with tried to tell me that this was standard bank policy. This means that she was either perfectly comfortable with lying to me, or woefully misinformed. That's certainly not BOA's policy, and I have friends who bank elsewhere who are able to immediately access at least a partial amount of a check deposited into an ATM. The rep also assured me that there was absolutely nothing she could do to help me. Again, she may have been lying. I would be interested to see how someone with a more substantial bank account would have been treated. However, if she was being honest, and there was truly nothing she could do for me, then UFCU's policy is unacceptable. I keep seeing all of these ads that say "Don't Tax My Credit Union." Why not? They apparently get to hold onto my money for as long as they see fit. I get better, more caring service from a large bank that doesn't have the best reputation. I have received no benefit from being a member of this credit union, and I am thoroughly soured on the concept. I was attracted to the idea that a credit union wouldn't charge me fees, and now I see that I get what I pay for. Whenever UFCU finally sees fit to let me have access to my money, I will be closing my accounts and urging my friends to take their business elsewhere. read more

I dont usually write reviews, but I have had a such a horrible experience with this credit union. I have been a member for 5 years, had multiple loans, and several accounts through them. Every year they get tighter and tighter, I get more and more fees and they technology is old an outdated. Its impossible to track what running balances in you checking account and they are like vultures waiting to charge any fees they can. If a fee is charged good luck getting anyone to explain to you why it was actually charged, and what it means. Every time I call support I can never actually talk to anyone that knows how to help, their fraud department is worthless so hope you never have to do a charge back or you will be wait for 6 months with no response and no action unless you call to initiate a converstation. Even then you cant speak directly to a fraud specialist, you get some teenager that doesnt understand basics of a credit/debit card. I have been a memeber Americafirst for years as well, and they are so much better to deal with, actionalble, and serve their customers. University Federal is struggling for marketshare and is taking it out on their members, trying to gain revenue any way possible. Too bad, they used to be good. read more
