I was surprised at how much you were allowed to take control of on your first lesson. My boyfriend was able to take off, fly and land the plane with just instructions from our instructor. He has had quite a lot of experience with simulators though. The best bit was that I was allowed to tag along for free at the back of the 4 seater plane! Much better than watching from the ground. The school itself has a real sense of community with everyone we passed saying hello, waving and making chit chat. I believe they also have a social club which is nice.

Booking online is very easy and any inquiries are responded to quickly as well. We arrived a tad early but our pilot/instructor had no problem starting upon arrival and providing us a nice tour of all of the simulators they have on site. Each simulator is approximately 10,000 GBP and they have 15 at this location for the various Boeing and Airbus models. Unfortunately the A380 and 787 are not at this location. Public use of the flight simulators did not open to the public until three years ago. On to the actual flying... The simulators have hydraulics so it really as if you are taking off, landing, or just flying through the air. Our instructor Stuart Slater explained every detail of the plane and walked through all of the knobs and switches of the control panel...and there are a lot! He then proceeded to step by step walk through how to steer the plane and how to complete a take-off and landing. You could tell that he really loved his job and loved flying! The planes have various airports loaded in them and so we tried out NY JFK as well as LHR. We got to fly ridiculously low and see all of the computer generated images of the cities. The images are very realistic and even show moving traffic on the appropriate side of the road respective to each country. Great once in a lifetime experience and worth the price.

The staff and instructors were all friendly. They put our birthday boy at ease, gave him clear instructions, and took him out for a fly. He got to experience what being in a small plane was like, and got to briefly try his hand at the controls. We watched (safely) from the ground. They offer a variety of intro courses, from short 30-minute lessons at just £49 up through several longer, more adventurous, more expensive options. Of course, they also offer proper flying courses for those who are looking to qualify. A nice gift idea, and a fun day out.
