VEGAN REVIEW Don't let this place's hilarious but questionable web address fool you, vegan-foods eater: this is a wonderful place to eat some tofu-containing meals late, late, late at night. Food is somewhere between 3 and 4 stars... but, man, where else are you going to get your maybe-not-sober self some vegan fast foods with tofu in 'em? We showed up because I was a meal behind and it was about 11 pm. I will tell you about the food in a minute, don't fret, but first I am going to set the stage for our visit: This take-out haven was, on the evening of our meal, inhabited by the owners' five-year-old son and 18-month-old daughter, in addition to a well-used and well-utilized train playset. Our conversation was _delightful_. Joseph, in case you were wondering, is pretty excited about kindergarten and has recently learned to spin dice like tops. His sister's main interests at this point are disassembling her brother's train creations and shaking objects that rattle. If I were a college student, I would be pretty stoked to see anybody who wasn't a university employee or between the ages of 17 and 23. Even as an adult-type person, it was pretty good. Okay, yes, the food: we got a carton so full of Bean Curd with Chinese Pickled Pepper that we could hardly pry the thing open. We watched the cook prepare it, too, and it was a very fancy thing. Full of oil, yes, and deeelicious. The broccoli dish we got was okay, but this dish blew it out of the water, in the middle of Drinkytime in good old Happy Valley. read more

As a new grad student this year, I've been working my way through all the Chinese take-out places in town, and this is so far my favorite, by quite a bit. Hot and sour soup was the only one I've found so far that was adequately both hot and sour, and it was also nicely thick. Ma-Po Tofu was also appropriately spicy and not too greasy because the tofu is steamed instead of fried. I wish it came with more vegetables, but it was quite all right with only the little bits of carrots and peas. Good ratio of sauce to tofu, and excellent ratio of tofu to rice. The only reason I am giving them 2 stars is because they give you a lot of food. It truly is a bang for your buck for portion size. This is touted by others as cheap and greasy. Well they got the greasy part right. The food was gross, but not any cheaper than other equally greasy but way more delicious Chinese fare in the State College and Bellefonte area. I ordered from Uncle Chen's using lionmenus.com. According to their restaurant info, they were voted best General Tso's. I figured it would probably be a safe bet right? Wrong. The chicken was dry and sauce was think and congealed and tasted too much of sesame oil, with no hints of garlic, ginger, or any other spices other than MSG and sodium. I also ordered the sweet and sour chicken dinner (complete with fried rice and an egg roll), crab rangoons, and fried donuts. The crab rangoons had hardly any filling, the sweet and sour chicken was dry and tasteless, and the sweet and sour sauce tasted like a medicinal cough syrup laced jelly, that left a pink stain on my arm where I spilled it accidentally. The fried rice and egg roll though not the greatest weren't that bad, my dog enjoyed the rice very much. The best part of the entire dinner was the fried donuts, but really how bad could a sugary lump of fried dough be? I feel bad saying all this though, because the guy that I talked to when I called (I had to call them back after they called me to see if I would still be there when they delivered, nice of them to ask), seemed really nice. I know some people absolutely love Uncle Chen's, but for my $26, I'd rather go somewhere else. read more

The food is averagely ok but the reason why I'm giving it a 2 star is that the rice is unforgivable. As a Chinese, I eat rice everyday and I know horribly prepared white rice when I taste it. The rice was unwashed and its cooked so it's so starchy and grainy. I might even say the rice tasted "dirty" because I know they didn't rinsed it. Worse of all, I can't eat any Chinese food unless I have my side of rice. So the rice ruined my experience. Overall, the food is not bad. I mean, I had steamed Chicken with Mixed Vegetable and that's hard to mess up. However, the service was kind of terrible. I had a misunderstanding. My friend and I ordered our food separately and the front person gave us the bag that we thought have both of our food. When we came back to my house, the bag only have my friend's order, which the hot & sour soup tasted too sour for normal standards. So we have to drive many blocks back to get the rest of our order. I remember the good 'ole days. Or rather, the so-so days for me on a personal note. Sure State College living is on the dull side if you prefer your dinners without the elusive hang over.. but every once in a while you find a fantastic hole in the wall place to grab cheap grub. Uncle Chen's is just about the best you can get in town (other than the Beef Bowl on College Ave) and the price is affordable for the even the poorest of students. The General Tso's chicken is simply beautiful: crispy to perfection with a unique sweet and spicy taste that knocks your socks off. It resembles hot wings with an asian kick. I love the "fried" rice- not greasy in the least and seasoned with soy sauce (just how I prefer it). The greatest dish? Their beef lo mien. Seriously. The huge strips of seasoned, grilled beef are unbelievable. Having moved from State College, I miss this place. My boyfriend and I have yet to find a comparable take out. read more

Second time getting Uncle Chen's and i gotta say i love it! Last time i tried regular Pork Lo Mein, came with fried rice and an egg roll. I used Order up delivery and it took like 40 minutes. This time, i got Sesame Chicken with steamed rice and Wonton in Egg Drop soup. I used pick up and it was ready in 5 minutes. BOTH these meals were STUFFED with so much food for only $8.95. And they were both delicious. The Sesame chicken and white rice tasted considerably more healthy than the Lo Mein. The Lo Mein was slightly greasy and God damned impossable to possibly NOT stuff my face until my trusty man girdle could restrain my loving food-baby any longer. So I'm out $38 and trapped in my room until my new Support Brief Girdle arrives, but right now my euphoric delerium is too good for me to care. Rude delivery driver. Campus order of 3 lunch specials took over an hour to arrive and arrived cold. Delivery driver called to ask if I'd meet him in the parking lot to pick up our food - it was cold with a mix of sleet and rain, which was why we ordered delivery - he was extremely rude during the conversation going to the extent to say "he doesn't know where everything on campus is" when asked if he could meet me at the main entrance rather than the parking lot. I never file a complaint but since he was rude and I had already tipped the delivery driver through our online order, we figured we'd make an exception this time. When I called the lady who answered the phone was apologetic.....only to hand the phone over to a man that continued to not understand that I was calling to complain about the delivery driver's behavior and not the length of time for the delivery. The man continuously explained the delivery time is estimated and they cannot change/control it, which was irrelevant to our reason for calling. For future department lunch orders, we'll be selecting another restaurant in State College that doesn't have issues delivering on campus or employ rude delivery drivers. read more

This is my first visit of the new location (well, new relative to when I tried Uncle Chen's a long time ago). Shop is awkward. And dirty. And did I mention awkward? They're mostly designed for delivery and take out. You can dine there, well not AT that shop, but at their neighbor, the bubble tea place, which is most likely owned by the same family? Things that just downright sucked... 1.) Ordered chicken and broccoli, normally something hard to screw up. Chicken was disgusting, bad smell, didn't taste good either. How do you screw up chicken? Was this chicken old, frozen, or what? Also, nothing seemed to be fried in the woks with the sauce. If it was, it was thrown around for a few seconds or so, and that's it. I'm sorry, but all of the ingredients should be fried in the wok with the sauce at the same time. None of this modular approach to cooking, where ingredients are cooked separately to save time and then thrown together at the last minute. It's apparent by the coverage of sauce on the dish's ingredients, and how it's just sort of laying there on the ingredients instead of coated. 2.) Rice is THE WORST I'VE EVER TRIED IN MY LIFE. I can't emphasize how horrid and disgusting this rice is. This is Chinese food, you should have pretty damn amazing white rice. But no. First, they don't even wash it. You can tell since it tastes dirty and is very starchy. Second, the rice is the cheapest grade stuff you'd ever find. You can tell because it's not very sticky (doesn't take water well) and the hull lines are visible on many of the grains. Uncle Chen's, stop cheaping out on one of the most important ingredients in Asian dishes. 3.) To-go order, and they didn't include any plasticware. Worse, they didn't include soy sauce, duck sauce, or any of the normal condiments. Instead if you get to-go and pick it up, you have to fish around in the cardboard boxes under the ordering counter to find those and add them yourself. They didn't even ask me if I wanted those things. Things that were good... 1.) Fast. 2.) Cheap for the quantity of food you receive. Overall, I wish I could give this place 0 stars to warn others to avoid it. Worst experience with Chinese food I've ever had. I couldn't even bring myself to take more than one bite of this awful stuff. I had to pitch it. I constantly hear about how good Uncle Chen's is so I finally got around to ordering some this year. I'm a bit of a picky eater, so I stuck with the tried and true General Tso's. Uncle Chen has your food ready really quickly! As others have said, you do get a lot of food too. However, out of the two times I've ordered from here, both of my meals were ruined by biting into a strange, chewy, purple-colored piece of chicken. It's just disgusting. Maybe Uncle Chen needs to slow down a little bit? Although I'm batting 1.000 here, I have thought of giving the Uncle one more shot, merely due to connivence factors. Delivery came quick, I liked the lo mein and fried rice. The beef skewers I would not recommend. I'm pretty sure it's not even safe to eat them. I broke one in half and it was like rubber and the insides were completely raw and inedible. Not sure I'll be eating here again. read more

This is my favorite place to order Chinese delivery for their Sesame Chicken and their General Tso's. However, I've never actually tried anything else on their menu. When I talked my coworkers into ordering from there, they didn't like their food, so if you don't want to order Sesame Chicken or General Tso's, I can't guarantee anything. The food comes fast and is well-priced! The meals come with a choice of soup, eggroll, or chicken wings. The absolute WORST customer service I have ever dealt with. after waiting over an hour for my order and calling twice, I called again to find out that they "don't know what happened to my food" and that there was "nothing they could do for me" in regards to getting my money back. I've been ordering takeout from here for years. It is good takeout American chinese food and it is always delivered quickly. Yum!

We ordered in advance for a pick up at a certain time. They had initially said they didn't have our order. Then they found it and when we went to eat it every single thing was so over cooked. I imagine they made it when we ordered despite having put in a pick up time several hours later. If they can't offer this option and make the food ready at that time (instead of making it and letting it sit forever on a heater) they should remove it from their ordering platform. Me and my boyfriend used to be die hard fans of Uncle Chen's. We always had ordered the same thing, General Tso's, Sweet and Sour Chicken, and a side order of Pork Fried Rice. I loved their Pork Fried Rice because they use big meaty strips of pork instead of the small cubes of pork that other chinese places seem to favor. We used to crave the food while away from State College, and it was always our first place to eat when we would get back into town from holiday. This is not the case anymore. I've given them many chances to impress me and keep me coming back, like they used to, but its just not the same anymore. Within the last year or so I've seen a steady decline in their food. The delicious Pork Fried Rice that had me so impressed when I first tried it, almost makes me throw up when I smell it because it has a (hate to say this) wet dog smell. I've tried it twice now hoping that it was a change in cooks, but time and time again the smell from the rice smells musky and incredibly unappetizing. My boyfriend still enjoys the General Tso's, but admits that the batter-to-chicken ratio has declined. He douses his food in Sriracha sauce anyway, so it doesnt bother him too much. I have noticed this, though, in ordering the Sweet and Sour Chicken. I would get a huge piece of what I thought is chicken, bite into it and realize it was just a giant piece of fried dough, containing no chicken. Even when I do get one that is chicken, it is dry and fried to a crisp, which it never used to be like that. Hopefully something will change with their food, and for the better. The food come in a huge portion! Most items on the menu are much better than average Chinese take out and definitely the best in State College. Now that I graduated, every time I visit the town I'd try to get one meal from Uncle Chen's. Some of my favorites are General Tso's and Beef with broccoli. Their soup is pretty good too. I'm sad to say this is the worst Chinese food I have ever had. I decided to order Uncle Chen's since it was significantly cheaper than Golden Ladle or Fuji & Jade (where I get my usual fix). However cheaper definitely isn't better. I ordered Ma Po tofu, which is my go to dish, and it was just so bland! Tofu tastes like whatever you cook it in, so if it is not in a good sauce, it basically tastes like nothing. So tofu + white rice with a boring sauce = not very satisfying. The portion was huge, and the delivery was fast, so if you want a lot of fast cheap food, this is the place. However if you're looking for a delicious meal.. Do not go here.
